What did you think? It was quite different than last night, what with the spot light entrances, and radio show. I also wished they showed more highlights. The video portion seemed to go rather quickly. There was also a longer question and answer portion, with some good and some not so good questions being asked. Anyway, I enjoyed seeing the vids of these young men, and I hope they are successful here!

I was shocked

I turned the dial to 830 during the Don Shelby Show and he had Mike Max on. Hopefully with tongue in cheek Shelby said, is today National Signing Day? And what do we know about these players? To which Max replied, it hard to tell how good a player will be. The rating services make money with there evaluations, but for instance Ra Shede Hageman played in the City Confernce. How can you tell he going to be good at the next level?

This is the snide nature of WCCO broadcasting.

Well I parked the car, did some shopping to come back to what seem to be a live broadcast from the Football Building. Max had Coach Brewster, Coach Fisch, and Coach Cosgrove. The Broadcast I thought would never happen was right there where I wanted it. Thank you Learfield, WCCO, and The University of Minnesota.

I was there and was a little disappointed in the crowd, while the turnout was great 800-1000, it seemed to be a little dead. I was there last year too when we had the higher ranked class and the place seemed to be loud and rockin' and that was missing this year. Maybe I was expecting too much in terms of excitement.

It was nice to see more people than in the past, I brought an extra person this year and hope to add to that next year.

All in all it was a great event, just wish the crowd would have been into it a little more.

I was there also and I agree last year seemed a little more.. fun. Were there tours this year? We were anxious to walk around and look around but didn't seem like anything was happening...

Maybe next year they can hold it in the DQ Club Room and give tours of the stadium?

Part of football and recruiting is winning football games. The more you win, the more credibility you get. Just seems to me, that is the way the world works. I think Coach Brewster knows that and that, at this stage, he needs more wins. One of the reasons I don't like the USC games. The program needs some wins.

And the only way to win games is to get high quality players that can play with the best of them. We're not going to get those players by playing against the likes of NDSU, FAU or Bowling Green. Put it this way, do you think Brewster used the matchup against the USC receivers to lure Carter from WVU? Think about it. The best players want exposure, playing USC will do that.

Has scheduling MAC teams and D1-AA teams helped us in the past? We were able to win those games but then rarely had a good record in the Big Ten. I'd rather lose one or two non-conference games to teams like USC and win 5 or 6 in the Big Ten every year, than beat up on crappy teams and then lose in the Big Ten.

I have been to both Brewster signing parties and agree that last night did not have the energy of the first one. A few thoughts on why:

1. Because of the live broadcast at 6:30 PM on WCCO, everything at the beginning was "on the clock" - it started earlier, moved quicker, more structured.

2. Because it started earlier, later arrivers like myself (got there at 6:10) found that the Budweiser and Miller Genuine Draft beer was already gone! The only alcohol left was wine or Miller Lite (ugh!) There were long lines (20+ minutes) for food, and they ran out of most of the items before I was able to fill my plate. Was relegated to cheese and crackers for my "dinner." A later start time (along with a more fully stocked bar) last year allowed participants to relax, have a few drinks and get into the spirit of the event a bit more.

3. One of the highlights of the 2008 event was a detailed presentation of the new stadium (videos, artist renderings, etc.) While the stadium was certainly referred to quite often last night, we did not see any photos, camera shots, etc. of the new Gopher Home.

4. It did not appear to me that there was as much video of the signees as last time. Could be that since there were fewer scholarships to had out, we had fewer kids to see.

5. The whole event was over by 7:30. Last year I had to leave at 8 PM and things were still going strong.

Despite the hiccups listed above, I still had a nice time and would do it again.

Thanks for the summary cemba.

Was wondering what I missed out on.

.....filet mignon, fine selection of MN beers, video presentation of new stadium with 3-D glasses, rubbing elbows with Grandpa Sports,

one can only imagine when one cannot attend...

Actually, they played the new stadium video from last year, they just did it early on (before the program actually started)

That description was dead on. I don't fault the GLC for the food issue. I can only imagine how many people RSVP at the door, so they don't know how many people will attend. It's kind of like the GLC tailgates, they do a great job, but always run out of beer and food...people need to RSVP before the event, or they need to get twice as much. Personally, I kept waiting for the line to go down - by the time I did, I got the last piece of bread, 2 crackers and cheese squares, and some fruit. Good thing for the Library pre and post event!

I didn't feel the energy and excitment from last year, I also think not doing the tours was not a good idea. People want to feel like they get a special experience, and our facilities are nice, it would be great to do that. That was my favorite part last year.

I didn't like the new format with the radio chat, but I see why they did it.

Overall - GLC puts so much time and effort into putting these things on, they do a great job!

You're absolutely right, GopherLady. The GLC works very hard on this and all the events it puts on to support the program. I hope the U admin doesn't forget, in fact, how hard the GLC has always worked and what a great loyal fan base they represent.

I do too - I feel as if they've already forgotten how much you have done. I think the fact that they haven't allotted tailgate spots to the GLC speaks to that fact. The thing they don't understand is, next year, it's going to be crazy. Every game will be sold out and there will be lots of fan support, and that's how it will be if we win, as long as we are winning. What's so important about the GLC and other booster clubs, is you enhance the experience and keep the program going when there aren't good years (like we've been going through). I've always said that some of the administration has a very short-term memory, kind of like a dog. They're much more reactive than pro-active.

You guys can just keep on with what you're doing, and know fans appreciate it!

Right on the money, GopherLady, I couldn't have said it better myself. It is perplexing that they haven't allotted spots to the GLC, and I wonder if they've thought about things like how that might affect the turnout at the Victory Walk if the "regulars" might not be in the area tailgating two hours before the games start. I guess I just hope that things will work themselves out after a year or two.

Has nobody ever catered an event?

You WANT people to walk up to events, that's how you hook them. Some RSVP's got shut out on the the food and beer as did all the Walk Up's. The event is fine, but once again no lesson was learned from the year before. You don't fail from shooting too high, you fail from a lack of planning. The beer and food was partially donated and partially bought, correct? That being the case, "over ordering" is not really a big possibility, since there is a fairly tried and true formula. Take your RSVP and increase amounts by 25%. That should help with walks ups and people who load their plates. Never assume that light anything is as popular as regular, and you should always order far less smalls that any other size, because it is far easier to wear something too large, then too small. I enjoyed myself at the event and the dinner at the Village Wok I had to buy for me and my starving guest afterward. My guest was way underwhelmed by the event because of the lack of food and beer, plus having to pay $10, the same price as the RSVP, for no food or beer, but loved the Wok and will go to games with me, If I feed her at the Wok as part of the day. Just my experience and some catering tips I have learned over the years.

Don't know what you are talking about 'no beer'. Yes they ran out of some flavors but they had Miller Lite & wine until close. Every year it should get better and better, and this year they took a little step backwards.

re3886 - I don't know what event you attended but it wasn't the same as the rest of us, NOBODY got shut out of beer, unless you're one of the haughty morons who don't consider Miller Lite beer. There was about 65 walkups who got plenty of food, probably too much food actually. And how do you know that ordering for the rsvp list + 25% isn't exactly what was done? Some of you who think you know how things work but actually have no clue crack me up.
