For the record: Rate the 2022 Hawkeyes

Don’t get the point of this thread?

We already have a great “Matchup with Iowa” thread. I think this could be combined with that one.

We already have a great “Matchup with Iowa” thread. I think this could be convinced with that one.

It's okay if you don't get it, and it's fine if you don't want to comment on whether or not you think beating Iowa would be a win over a quality opponent.

I'm not trying to piss anybody off. I just wonder if a win over Iowa constitutes a quality win or not.

I say it certainly does, but I'm interested in other opinions on this.

Gopher football regular seasons are always going to be judged on 1) overall W-L record and 2) if we won our two main trophy games.

Then what level of bowl game we made it to and if we won it.

I notice a few people who respond seem to answer a different question.

Again: Is this Iowa team good, mediocre, or terrible? Would a win against them be a quality win?
Their defense is good. Their offense is terrible. Overall, they are mediocre. About the same as the rest of the B1G West and better than the non-conference trash we played. You so badly want to inflate our team this year - it is a reoccurring theme on here. They simply aren’t that good. Not terrible, but not that good. 🤷‍♂️ Beating Iowa won’t change that, but who cares - beating Iowa is its own reward.

Yeah, you got me, Spoof; trying to "inflate our team" — on a fan site.

I guess I'm just weird, huh?

By the way, though, Spoof... thanks for at least answering the question honestly; now I know that you think the Gophers are, quote, "not that good."

I disagree with your answer, but it is at least an answer.

I don’t know about weird - but I did see you go a bit crazy when the B1G West was referred to as weak and then again when some didn’t react strong enough about a win against a terrible Rutgers team. Follow that up with wanting people ‘on the record’ about what beating Iowa means days before the game and it isn’t too hard to see where you are going with this. It’s rather transparent, actually 🤷‍♂️

Again, Spoof, you see right through me. You caught me red-handed, blatantly trying to pump up the Gophers.

Imagine... behavior like that, on a fan site. Transparent, and, as you said, "crazy".

Well, I mean, they are yet to beat a team with a winning record. I don’t think they are that good. 🤷‍♂️ Still, if they beat Iowa and/or Wisconsin I will be just as happy as if they were a great team doing that. I have tickets to both games. I’m perfectly happy cheering for them w/o thinking they are great. I’m a Crystal Palace fan too 😳

Actually, I didn’t say that was crazy - I said your behavior when the B1G West was called weak was a bit crazy - because it was 🤷‍♂️

Yes, you go to the games... but it bugs you, just a little bit, when someone like me gets a little too excited about the team, or seems to think they might actually be better than average.

You asked for everyone’s opinion. More than once. I gave you mine. I’m not bugged, but you seem to be. Next time don’t ask 🤷‍♂️

Oh, I appreciate your answer; you said the team is kind of average. Fair enough.

But you couldn't resist commenting on my reasons for asking the question in the first place. You were analyzing my motives, Spoof.

Correctly too, which bugs you.
Have a great night and Go Gophers!

It bugs me when people call folks out for being too enthusiastic on a fan site, yes. I admit it.

But, hey... you're the guy that buys the tickets and sits in the cold to watch the Gophers. If you want to do all that for an average team, you have that right. For your sake, I hope you get to see something that seems above average to you, some day... for all your trouble.

It will be a quality win. Right now they are the 2nd toughest opponent on our entire schedule behind Penn St.

MN is favored by about 5 points on S&P+. The game is at home. Iowa is even more constipated on offense than usual.

That said, the anxiety many (most?) fans are having about the game is a direct reflection of Fleck and the guys finding ways to lose versus the Hawkeyes for 5 years running. MN can win and should win but all the stats and rankings and predictions go out the window in a late season game versus a very good (overall) Big Ten rival on what looks to be a brutal weather day. Ferentz has had PJs number. This is a big test.

Really depends on what you mean by quality win

It’s not a top 25 win. But it’s about as good of a non top 25 win you can get.

This is maybe a silly question but is the CFP still using human polls as a measure of a quality win? AFAIK advanced metrics like Sagarin, FEI and so on have Iowa in the top 25. Simple win/loss polls biased by compounding errors aren’t as forgiving, and maybe not as accurate.

It's just a group of humans who get in a room each week and bang out a top 25. They really only need to do a top 12, but they do a 25 for completeness and because that is the historical standard.

The initial ranking is really the thing. Because after that, they do this simple formula:

- if you win, you don't move down
- if you lose, you can move down an arbitrary number of places
- if you win and X teams that were above you lose and get moved down below you, you slide up X places

That's pretty much it. Only thing they do each week is pick a "convenient" place for the losers to slide down into, and then in the lower portion when a team loses they can drop them off and replace with a new team. The biggest thing with that is picking who they want to be the highest ranked G5 conf champion, for the last NY6 spot.

Would like nothing better than for Gophs to be in the position at the end with the game in hand to take some timeouts in the closing seconds...you know, because hate to just leave them unused.

They aren’t in the CFP top 25

If we aren’t counting the gophers as currently top 25 I don’t think we can count Iowa as top 25.
I tried to tell some on this board that there are 5 teams in the west in the top 40 and was mocked and ridiculed for using some efficiency metrics.

They would definitely be the most quality win to date

Going further, does the CFP use end of season rankings (flawed as they are) to determine quality wins or do they use the ranking at the time of the game to determine quality wins. I’m afraid I already know the answer.

I’ve always been perplexed by committees and polls. Sorry

We can take the Pig and gift our unused T/Os to Kirk F to take back to Iowa City.

Committees are stupid.
They should have an objective measure.
I tried to tell people Minnesota is a top 40 team and I got ridiculed.
