For everyone who was there THAT night

That night was both my greatest as a Gopher fan and my worst. I think over time I've come to view the game with some perspective. I'm happy I was there because I saw for the first time that this community will get behind the Gophers if they field a consistently competitive team. We also saw that the casual fan will just as quickly turn on the "same old Gophers."

What a night.

Remember all three of these losses. The michigan loss hurt the most because that team had so much potential. Wisky loss is close because of the dramatic horrible end to the game. Plus it is the stinking badgers so that stunk. The huge blowout loss at the hands of Nebraska was hard to stomach but didn't bother me as much.

The DB coach for Minnesota under Salem was Chuck Dickerson. They wanted to stop the option and
Turner Gill/Mike Rozier. I was at the Friday luncheon and he was sitting at the table next to us. He was almost arrogant in how the Gophers were going to play single coverage on Nebraska wide receivers without rolling over the safety on their top receiver Irving Fryer. I thought too myself. We're
going too get killed.

This. The program is a sleeping giant, as has been repeated often.

Jerry should have punched in the final TD to make it 36-7. when you get the man on the mat you do not ever ever let up.

Thinking about it, I could go either way on it. Like I said, Gary Moeller ran it up on the Gophers in 1991. I'm sure there are many other times when Bo did as well.

However, Brady Hoke's 2011 club could have hung 100 on the Gophers if they really wanted to; he took his foot off the gas at halftime.

I was there with my entire extended family when I was 10 years old. In 2003 we did have the best rushing attack in the nation BY FAR with Barber III, Maroney, and Tapeh who all played in the NFL, not to mention Khaliq's running ability or the offensive line. Combine that with our solid passing game (Utecht, Spaeth) and I SINCERELY believe that had we gotten past Michigan and MSU, we would have had a very good chance of at least tying for the national championship

I'll never forget that night and what could have been, but this victory takes most of the pain away.

I will try to put a positive spin on it. I had had season tickets since 1983 and my wife had a lukewarm interest, at best, in the Gophers UNTIL the that Michigan game. Since that time we have missed, maybe, a handful of home or away games. She is a hardcore Gopher football fan because of the Michigan game and has an extreme dislike for Michigan. There is nothing better than a silent Big House when the Gophers are playing there.

You're both wrong.

Nebraska 84
Minnesota 13
Sept. 17, 1983
Minneapolis, MN
Nebraska 21 21 21 21 — 84
Minnesota 0 10 3 0 — 13

Sucked either either way.

The only thing bigger than Nebraska's final score was the shoulder pads. And the "new dome smell" was still fresh.

Wisconsin in 2005 would be second on my list, after Michigan in 2003. I remember (or think I remember) two things about the end of that game. First, that I really thought Mason should go for it on 4th and short instead of punting, because Wisconsin hadn't stopped a running play all day. (Almost no one would have really done that from that field position, of course, and certainly Glen Mason would never have even considered it.)

Second, we were even unlucky on the direction in which the botched snap to the punter was dropped. Wisconsin was rushing the punter all from one side, and the ball came over to that side, giving him no chance. If the ball had bounced the other way, he could have picked up and walked for a first down (or at least gotten a punt off).

That one really hurt also.

The truth is that on 3rd and 1, Mase called for a dive by Maroney, who was stopped. Russell hadn't been stopped fo a loss all season. That was the key mistake...and not discussing (ever) what to do in case of a bad snap.

This thread is giving me nightmares. I'm going to wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat after seeing John Navarre marching up and down the Metrodome's field. I was a freshman that year. It gave me a taste of what was to come as a Gopher fan.

Maroney was a better back than Russell. Can't blame Mase for putting the ball in the hands of his best player at that point.

Not sure if mentioned above, but I still have nightmares about the 31-0 lead we had on Ohio St in 1989 and blowing it. One of the worst games I remember watching. Here's the description from the Ohio St. side...

I watched that OSU game on ABC with my dad and grandpa (rip). We still talk about that one. It was the beginning of the end for Gutekunst. He looked completely helpless on the sideline, like he had no idea what to do or how to slow down the Buckeyes.

Maroney was a better all-around back. On 3rd and 1, in that Gopher offense, Russell should have gotten the carry. There's no way Wisconsin stops him from getting a yard that day.

That was my point, too. Russell was never stopped for a loss that season, while Maroney probably had a couple of dozen. You give it to your bruiser on short downs, especially one that was never stopped that year..

I was at both the 1989 loss to Ohio State and Michigan in 2003

That OSU 1989 games was about as lousy a feeling as the 2003 Michigan game for the bad taste it left in everyone's mouths.

Michigan 2003 what can I say, our group was in season 7 of having seats in the same spot on the visitors sideline.
You could see problems starting to arise when Michigan started hitting that screen pass to Perry. My buddy T turned to me at the end of the third quarter break and said this is a lot of fun "But this game is not over, this is Michigan after all" , "Still the Best Gopher crowd I have ever been apart of". The stadium was as loud and pumped for Gopher football as I had ever seen it, Twins were in the playoffs and Carr was whining all week about having to play Friday night. Sansavere and Tom Bernard were even pumping the game up on KQRS morning show all week, and Reusse was even talking highly of the Gophers on the radio that week and what a running game they had.

There must have been 10,000 to 12,000 walk up sales for game tickets because the line winded around from the lower level to the upper deck entries by the main gate and there were a lot of people dressed in Gold Minnesota gear, and the game was as close to a sell out that I have ever seen the Dome for a Gophers game and it was Finally a MINNESOTA crowd, not all packed with Visitors.
I still remember when Asad was about to throw that pass, that the Michigan linebacker picked off because you could see that Asad didn't see him in that Zone drop, and the Michigans linebackers Eyes got "All big" you could his facial expression turn to a smile and his eyes light up before Asad threw the football. I wish I could have pulled some MATRIX type crap, pulled Asads arm down and made him run and juke the linebacker instead of throwing.
I still remember yelling as loud as I could, and I have a fairly loud voice, "RUN" RUN" "RUN", "GO" "Go" "Go" "GO" before he came to the line of scrimmage, the croud roar was so loud I doubt he could even hear any of what I was yelling as he escaped the pressure. He must have been coached to throw up the field instead of taking off and running in that instance.
I still remember that "NO, NO, No" feeling(Like PA calling the Vikings loss to the Cardinals that knocked them out of playoffs)
I had as he AAK brought his arm up to throw, (he doesn't see the linebacker in front of him) Without that turnover and pick 6, there is no way Michigan comes back in that game and takes that victory away.
That game would have been a program changer, a signature win, and instead it sent us in to a malaise the next week where we turned over the ball alot against Michigan state, they pulled off that dang onside kick that hit the lineman, and the crowd went from 63,000 people against Michigan to 36,000 people in one weeks time against Michigan State, they played hard and scored a lot but could just not overcome the Michigan game hangover. As bad a game and loss as Wisconsin 2005 was the dropped punt, this Michigan loss will forever be for me one that turned the Gophers programs destiny backwards five years. Without that 2003 Michigan game loss, Tim Brewster never becomes Gophers coach so who knows what the ramifications would have been. That 2003 Michigan game was a program changer absolutely the wrong way. There were a lot of what if's in that game, but that pick six to the Michigan linebacker is one I wish they could have gone back in time and changed. In one week we went from the Penthouse to the outhouse, and there was nothing that was going to change that "Same old Gophers" crap you could hear everyone griping about after the game. Under this staff, I don't think they will ever get that high where there is such a letdown and crash, at least I hope not, hopefully this staff can avoid the hangover effect and get the team focused each week. Need to beat Northwestern next week first and foremost, the jug hangover euphoria must end this week, and the team get back to business. I don't mind if it helps there confidence but they need to get back to playing that hard and bringing the "wood" each week. There have been some sucky losses over the years, Texas Techa and NC State in the bowl games and some of the Wisconsin losses, but Michigan 2003 will forever be the haunted house of horrors. Glad that Metrodome stinking demon is demolished.

I drove about 85 mph from Madison that day to make the 7 PM kickoff. Left work around 2:30. Arrived at the Dome aroudn 6:15. Downed a couple of beers, met my friends, and walked into the stadium. It was the coolest pre-game vibe for a game at the Dome in my lifetime. I remember going into the stadium right behind the BB team and they were all jacked. It was so cool that we had a primetime Friday game matching top 25 teams in ESPN with nothing else on TV. College Football's eyes were on us. I know that Friday is reserved for HS football but that Friday night game was awesome. Can't explain it. Better than Thursday nights because people have to work the next day and better than Saturday nights because you're competing with other games. We had that night to ourselves and to show the country that we had arrived. 28-7 baby! F'in jacked. Sat in the student section. I was 24 but one of my friends was a grad student and got us student season tickets in '03 and '04 (regular season ticket holder since '05).

You know the ending but we were planning on attending a big party after the game. We both agreed walking to our cars that we'd be complete downers so we just went back to my friends house and drank our sorrows away in private.

It was the biggest upper and then downer in my fandom lifetime. Unmatched.

At the '03 game with my wife and son who was 8 at the time. He had been going to the games for a while, but by that time he was just begining to fully understand football and the meaning of the Little Brown Jug. He kept repeating "We're gonna get the jug, we're gonna get the Jug!" Of course he was crushed. Fast forward to Saturday. He is now a sophomore at the U and he was home last weekend. His girlfriend is over and we are all watching the game. At some point the topic of the 2003 game comes up (I think in the broadcast) and out of nowever my son states "That game is the reason I have trust issues." His girl friend's head snaps, but she wisely said nothing. I couldn't stop laughing and we all enjoyed the entire game. I hope his demons are exorcised.

A friend of mine is known in our circle as being cursed when it comes to sports. If he roots for a team or attaches himself to an athlete, bad things happen. For instance, you’ll find few bigger Timberwolves fan in this town than him. His interest in the Twins spiked in 2010 and 2011, just as the good times devolved into the present dark age afflicting the team. Many a boxer and MMA fighter has seen his career falter not long after this guy started backing him. So he and I along with two other friends attended the 2003 Michigan-Gophers game. Right after we went up 28-7, he went and bought a Gophers cap. The meltdown began no more than a couple of minutes after he returned to our seats. To this day, we still jokingly blame him for the loss while encouraging him to help the Gophers by supporting the opposition.

I was at the game but it doesn't bother me anymore. And despite what people are saying the game was not sold out and there were lots of empty seats. The only thing I don't like to remember is the atmosphere in the dome. From the blue seats to the horrible lighting the whole sterile experience is best forgotten. I do cherish the memories from Memorial Stadium.

Go Gophers !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Official capacity for Gopher football at the Dome was 64,172 and attendance was "only" 62,374, most of them Gopher fans. There were not "lots of empty seats." How many times have we hit 60K+ in the Dome and had them be mostly Gopher fans? Wisconsin and Iowa games have both topped 65,000, but what percentage of those were opposing fans?

We're not talking about the relative merits of the Dome in this thread. It's impossible to deny how electric the Dome was that night and how crushing that loss was to the program and to attitude around the program as a result of the collapse. For some of us, that's a long lasting pain that may never go away. It's going to take a special team and a special season to finally heal those wounds.

There were a lot of empty seats and they really show up when the seats are blue. There was maybe 55,000 to 56,000 people in the stands. My row was half empty.

I was at the game, and I don't recall lots of empty seats. It was the loudest Metrodome crowd that I remember.

. It's impossible to deny how electric the Dome was that night .

Agreed, it would not be hyperbole to say that if the dome was like that for every Gopher game we would not have TCF. It was THAT fun until the 4th quarter.
