Football-friendly ticket policy angers some U students

So I've been reading this viewpoint a lot in this thread, and I feel like I'm missing something. I'm probably more of a hockey fan than a football or basketball fan, but I wouldn't say by much. So maybe that's clouding my perception, but I see a thousand times more people complaining about hockey fans than I see hockey fans complaining. Aside from the one student in the article, this thread contains no complaints by hockey fans, and countless complaints ABOUT hockey fans.

Anyone care to elaborate?

Most hockey fans don't hang out here. They have their own message board at gopherpucklive.com.

Is there an off topic board for them to fight about Mercedes vs. BMW? Or do they just have one large board for that along with them sharing stories of who can be the biggest asshole at their child's hockey games?

Him getting involved and using the word "appalled" is easily the most embarrassing and ridiculous thing about all of this.

Exactly.

1. He shouldn't be involved.
2. Publicly calling out the U over student ticket pricing, and in the manner he did, is total BS grandstanding. If he disagreed with the policy, fine but it sure as H could have been done in a more 'professional and civil' manner.

I started a thread(on the basketball forum) about the number of people on the basketball forum vs number of people on the hockey forum a few month back. You would of thunk I started World War 3.

And then for some inexplicable reason the mods moved it to the hockey forum.:banghead:

They probably should have never started the hockey forum. There are posts from April on the front page.

Imagine the outrage that will come next season when they realize they can raise the $99 price of hockey tickets to $125 because of the sales for the $175 package. You can see from the comments in the Yahoo article and other comments on this board that this is being done everywhere. The heat will come off Minnesota when an investigative reporter writes about others and there is uproar at Indiana, Kansas, and others. I love hockey and Gopher hockey for the record. Next news story please.

Why limit it at 125, if they want a ticket to Hockey they should pay a fair rate. I would say most would think $18 to $20 per game is a equitable price. So you don't want a bundle. Its 180 to 220. How many do you want?

Why not charge them a $250 seating fee too, and a few dollars every time the band plays the rouser? Student tickets should not be the place the U is trying to squeeze money out of.

I'm aware of that, I'm just saying that I see a whole lot of people who have real moral objections to hockey fans, without seeing much objectionable behavior from those hockey fans. (See furry's post below yours. Seems like hatred for the sake of hatred)

To take a slightly different tack: what the U did in bundling is akin to something that happens in the concert industry. A lot of performers have started their own "fan clubs," and if you are willing to pay the yearly dues, you have access to various perks - including the ability to be the first to purchase tickets for certain concerts. The point being that, people who are willing to pay extra to join the fan club can purchase tickets ahead of time - so the people who are not willing to join the fan club have a lesser chance to purchase good seats, or can even find themselves shut out if the concert sells out while they are trying to navigate the ticketmaster website on a Saturday morning.

The hockey fans (in my analogy) are like the concert fans who complain about not being able to get the prime seats. Well, they had the chance to join the fan club - just like the hockey fans had the chance to purchase the bundled ticket package. If you decline to take advantage of the offer, you should not be able to turn around and complain about the consequences. (or, to put it another way, I want to have my cake and eat it too. - that's a cake-eater joke for all you Edina hockey fans.)

Are there any student basketball seats available? I don't see them on gophersports.

You should get a resolution passed by that turd Kyle Kroll of the U of M senate. He seems to have plenty of time for those. Ha! That self-important P.O.S. :p

Btw, how is it not a conflict of interest to introduce a resolution to the student senate on something such as this that you will personally benefit from while still serving on the student senate. Seems shady, imo.

You all do realize that the attendance issue for the student section for Gopher football is not a Minnesota thing, don't you? It's a trend nationwide, with some exceptions. Google "college football attendance decline" and see what you find. It's also a real concern among major universities because football helps drive alumni donations, and if you have a generation of students that don't care about football, it can affect donations 10-20-30 years down the line.

There have been many theories as to why student attendance is in decline. Length of games, cost of tickets, unpredictable and changing start times, 11 am games, student sections being moved, people would rather be able to drink, people would rather be able to watch on TV and switch between games, too many cupcakes, etc. We're not the only school trying to boost student attendance in different ways.

All good points, but all fans, not just students. Also often mentioned is the expansion and ever changing conferences..........as in loss of geographical rivalries. Minnesota vs Rutgers is not a long standing rivalry.

Oh come on. I have no ill will towards hockey fans. Just the ones that have an inferiority complex that hate on other sports. I was just making fun of the rich white hockey fan stereotype.

President Kaler said on Almanac the 70% of hockey student season-ticket holders in 2013-14 also bought a 2013 football ticket, hence the bundling. What Kaler & Teague didn't expect is that 100% of the student section would be sold out in the bundle pre-sale.

To me, this means it was a roaring success. No one was ripped off. No one. It would be different if they had no sold out. Season tickets are not a right, but a privilege. Knock off a latte a week and it's paid for, whiners.

I'm sure Governor Goofy will want to unionize STH soon.

+1

I don't think the price of student season tickets should be market driven. You pay $15K a year to attend an institution part of that should include reasonable access to that schools sporting events as part of the experience of being an attending student. I'm not saying free tickets because that creates it's own problems but something in the $10-$15 per event range seems reasonable. IF demand is higher than supply then they should put these in a lottery of some sort and in cases like hockey they should expand the student section to help meet demand and make up the difference by charging more for the even more limited seating remaining from non students. There are no U of M sports without the 30K plus students attending the school so they should get first crack at those seats.
