Because of construction I had to drive by the football facility and I was unaware of any new construction or additions. What is the addition they are building?

The University of Minnesota began construction on a new gymnastics facility on March 27 with the building set to be completed by January 2025. The new, privately funded facility ($15.5M) will put the gymnastics team on the perimeter of Athletes Village on the south side of the Larson Football Performance Center. I guess we know of one athletics team that isn't going to see any cuts. Also, I assume we have a former alum who is a major backer as this is privately funded. Now if the Football program could find a few of those.

Robert Eddy has given a lot of money to that program as well as other departments. Telecommunications? and I think an owner of BJ’s Wholesale? Can’t recall exactly where he made his money.
 

Speaking of the Athlete's Village.......how close is it to being paid off?
 



The new Gymnastics facility is an addition to the Indoor Football Practice Facility as it's attached. Back in design of Athlete's Village, there was a fully designed addition at this same location with approximately the same size footprint to be called "Lineman's Turf". It was a separate 20ish-yard long field intended to give the offensive and defensive line a dedicated space to run drills when the full indoor field is in use. It was not originally in the budget, but Kill/Claeys pushed hard for it. The department said they could have it if they fundraised the cost of it, or if bids came in low and it fit within the budget. That did not happen, so it was not built. The concession was it could be added in the future if they could raise enough funds for it, so that spot was left open (they put in a sand volleyball court in it's place). That football-specific addition got sunk with the sinking of the Kill/Claeys ship. The new Gymnastics facility was proposed elsewhere on campus, but didn't happen, and now it's being built here. Will they bring Men's Gymnastics back if there are private benefactor(s)?
 




Is there a depression era coming in non-revenue collegiate sports? Are more non-revenue programs going under the knife?

OT: Here is a good movie about the 1936 University of Washington Rowing team that won the gold medal in the 1936 Olympics. They did begging in that era to send the team according to the story.
