Fleck post practice video

Ibrahim and some other guys out of country on academic trips.

Fleck said guys that were there at running back need to come a long way. Lot of balls on ground.

Faalele got pulled off field by Fleck and then left field. Came back after a lot of plays. Had to collect his thoughts. Needs to learn to handle things. Fleck said the standard will be upheld and raised.

Likes SoriMarin leadership, mentioned Early enroll frosh Lingenberg as looking like he’s been here two years, early enroll frosh Qwon has athleticism. Impressed with Aune...moves like safety, plays like linebacker. Asked about Oliver not being at practice, said some guys are doing injury rehab.

Rush playing Rush end. Like his measureables. Think he can play better closer to line of scrimmage.

Bateman added weight, looks bigger, more explosive, studying the game a lot, over winter, over spring break....more vocal leader.

Likes his quarterback room. Camaraderie. Annexstad still coming from foot, hasn’t had this rigorous of a workout. But said he looked good.

Rossi doing great job with linebackers, Haynes doing great with corners, Harasymiak doing great with safeties. Lot of talent in defensive coaching. Guys who could be coordinators or head coaches tomorrow.

Ran no passing plays. Focusing on run game. Have to be able to run the ball. Have to be able to do it for a long time.

loves his linebacker group...third practice...first in pads...no tackling...thinks DD and CAB have stepped up...need Seth and Geary to be there...mentioned some frosh wrs coming in summer...

I just saw the confrontation between Annexstad and Faalele and missed Fleck pulling Faalele off the field. Still not good but that makes me feel a lot better about it. I liked the response by both Zach and Fleck. I think a lot of other coaches would have overreacted and made the situation much worse.

He still seemed a little out of it when he came back. At the end of practice he was on the outside of the linemen group and was pulled in by teammates. Hopefully just a bad day.

Sounds like Daniel is out of shape, based on the blow by blow account I read of the incident.

from Greder at PioPress:

Some notable players either absent or limited Friday were cornerback Benjamin St-Juste, linebacker Braelen Oliver, center John Michael Schmitz, tight end Jake Paulson and running backs Jason Williamson and Johnny Santaga.

Interesting press conference. Oliver was not mentioned. Faalele and Zach? Who knows? I'm thinking this team is going to be really good. But then again, I'm a fan.

Where is this story?

Comment on GI from someone who was at the practice. Fleck dropped an F bomb over the loudspeaker, telling him to get up. A few played later, Fleck told Callahan to “get him out of there...I can’t watch anymore of this.” Then Daniel stormed off the field, and ZA tried to stop him. Daniel moved ZA out of the way, and kept walking. He came back a few plays later. They said it appeared as though Daniel was out of shape.

Wow...when was the last time something like this happened around here? Hopefully they'll have a Kum Ba Ya moment later. Thanks PitinoFan by the way.

From everything I’ve read, it sounds like it was a short term thing, but if Daniel is serious about being the best he can be at American football, he’s going to need to be more dedicated to the off season conditioning program. It’s possible the injury could have played a role, but I remember hearing that he was good to go shortly after the bowl game.

So much for the strength coach keeping tabs on him.

Thanks Swingman for this excellent video. It shows PJ Fleck's "method to the madness" of effective coaching.

IMHO, it is a lot tougher for the big guy Fa'alele coming off an injury.

He may have healed, but the conditioning especially for big offensive linemen is going to take longer.

Repetition and failure, repetition and failure is part of the Gopher Mojo. Eventually, with the right attitude he will get better.

It has to be frustrating for him. "These are kids." The mental aspects of the game - "Response. He left and came back after he collected his thoughts." "The standards have to be upheld." I can see how PJ coaches. One on ones has to be real crucial.

If you watched last season the intimate moments that PJ had with Curtis Dunlop teaching and encouraging. The bar is never going to be lowered. That is the reason why kids want to play for Fleck.

You don't see OLs playing right away very often. It takes two or three years of dedicated hard work and conditioning. A red shirt year would do wonders for Fa'alele, but the Gophers did not have that luxury.

The first few practices are the most important for team progress and player evaluation. This sets the agenda for all the moving parts of the team. Finding who will be the next men up to replace the departed players. How are the development of the players behind them? The position coaches are also doing self evaluations. That has to be a fun meeting room for the coaches.

Did anyone get a glimpse of the kickers, especially the Aussie Mark Crawford? What about the German SDE Melle Kreuder?

Very similar thing happened last year at an open practice. Fleck booted a player and said almost the exact same thing over the PA.

I’m not sure how much motivation a guy needs in addition to the prospects of millions at the next level but we’ve all seen guys that didn’t have their heads screwed on right throw it all away. Have to think the blowup walk off was a moment of frustration and no big deal. Everyone has been there in some way, shape, form in their own lives.

Being injured stinks and particularly if the rehab and conditioning isn't progressing per “the book”. This was third practice?

Let's not forget that Annexstad played a huge part in getting Faalele to Minnesota. You can be sure that ZA had only encouraging words for DF and that in the end, this whole thing blows over quickly.

We have proven we can win without DF in the game, I would just like to think we are better with him in there, that kind of remains a question mark for me.

Anyone that thinks that this moment was anything of consequence...is not thinking. Don't be a snowflake.

You want to earn millions? Put on the big boys pants and s#ck it up. The Gophers aren't lowering standards for anyone under this coaching regime anytime soon. Elite is not a word used lightly.

We have? We went in the tank against Sconny after he went out. There is zero question we are better with him in the game

No offense, but that is exactly what it has become around here. In fact, it’s been substituted for virtually every lesser word when possible. It’s a commodity in Minnesota at this point.

Elite post.

Do you remember which player?

No but I remember it was Rodney Smith who went to talk to him and walked with him off the field. It was at TCF.
Strange that I don't remembering this happening last year. Good of Smith to step up in this case.

Pretty sure it was the Spring game but they also had a Fall practice at TCF. I went to all the open practices and a couple more. It was talked about in several threads as well.

James Gordon? I‘m pretty sure it was a true freshman. I remember looking the player up. Think it’s him, but not 100%. He came right back, just like Faalele did. No big deal.

Could be. Never said it was a big deal. Just remember Smith crossing the field, talking to him and getting him to walk to the tunnel because he was not moving.
