Flashback! Gophers win at Penn State in 2003 despite AAK only completing 6 passes for 54 yards. MB3 carried the way with 134 rushing yards. (video)

Mason showed some nerve that day. After going up 7-0 early, he ordered an onside kick that worked. 14-0 in 1st quarter, then the play-not-to-lose offense. Nearly backfired.

That Penn State team was 1-7 in the Big Ten that year.

It's a shame that we all remember that season mostly for the Michigan meltdown, because that was a really good, and really fun to watch team. I'll never forget watching Rhys Lloyd sprint over to grab the axe.

I remember this game vividly, we totally dominated the first half then went into the turtle shell and hung on for dear life

one of Mason's biggest faults was his emoitional coaching style. The team responded to his emotioinal state throughout his tenture. Some of the bigger meltdowns came when he relaxed, wasn't focused and keeping the team driving for a win. The Micron PC.com bowl and the Texas Tech debacle with big leads where prime examples of this flaw.

That was a great season, fun to watch, and some really great kids on these teams. That Michigan game will forever hurt.

I was at that game. Probably the most fun road trip I've ever taken.

Anytime I see MBIII's name, highlights, etc. it brings about melancholy--he may be my all time favorite Gopher, I just loved to watch him run and power into and over defenders and to surmise that style led to such a painful end to his life. So very sad. I still love watching the game and doing fantasy football, but thinking about MBIII causes me to pause and wonder if I still should.
