Five Guys On A Shortlist: If the U Decides Change Is Needed, Aim High & Don't Be Cheap With That Big Ten Cash

Fair enough.

Let’s hear your recommendations. Give us 5 names Coyle should pursue?

I loved the other two on your list. Medved and McCollum(though maybe risky).e

I don't have excellent ideas off the top of my head. But its more so that people seem to be aiming too high. Many guys will laugh in our face

Wade is def worth the flier if better teams don't want to give him the chance. Drew. Dutcher(think that ship sailed). Find a good proven assistant(keyword here, not a Ben)

I have absolutely no idea who that even is
Thanks.

There was a Marquette guy on the board a long time ago (10 years?) who was always saying what a great coach he’d be (for Gophers). Think his moniker was JB. Skerry is at Towson now and hasn’t done anything.

Mn revenue for 2024 is 148 mil, Iowa state is 114 mil. That gap is only going to grow as the bigten tv deal fully kicks in. I'm sure the gap would grow even larger if Mn had a winning team and put fans in the stands. In 2022 the latest info I can find Mn bball profited 9.8 mill. We can afford to pay for a top coach. Offer Otz 7 mil a year and 4 mil guarantee for nil and make him say no.

Thanks.

No I've been the same guy here for longer than that haha. No multiple accounts.

When you said his name I actually panicked thinking my fandom was lacking and Skerry was some old Marquette assistant or something haha.

Again though, I think you are underestimating how much those other teams can pay. The two BE teams especially. They don't have football to budget for.

Otz has his pick of the liter basically so that's clearly why you are not going to draw him in any facet(money, league, program etc..). McD/Miller would require equivalent program plus more enticing conference(if there is one for them). Gophs even if they want to, do not have any sort of money offer to move the needle for these guys.
😂😂😂😂

If they want to they can. Just takes the will to put an end to the losing.

No they literally cant.

You think Greg McDermott after going to 3 sweet 16s in 4 years is chilling at Creighton because they cant pay him and he wants a worthy offer from Minnesota???

Mn can pay whatever it takes. They can.

IF they want.

We're in the Big Ten. In a few year, only the SEC and Big Ten will matter.

The best coaches will want to be in the Big Ten, and the Twins Cities is a great place to live.

Coyle absolutely should go after a big name, coach and throw some serious $$$ at him.

As long as the new president doesn't hamstring the search, I'm confident we'll make the big swing.

I feel like Will Wade coming here would be following the same path as Rick Pitino. Good success, get caught cheating, get fired, get a 2nd chance at a midmajor, build them up to winning status, then get hired on at a major school and build them back up. He's who I'd want

Agree. McDermott already turned down Ohio State several years ago when they hired Holtmann. He isn’t going to start over a rebuild now at his age at a lesser Big 10 program than one he already turned down. He will retire at Creighton with his statue and court named after him when he wants. Otzelberger has ties to Iowa State as a assistant and his wife was a star player for the Cyclones so that may likely be their dream destination.

The problem is no one knows how much of this Big ten money is used up to supplement all these other athletic programs at Minnesota that lose money, and some a lot of money. There may not be a lot of money left over after paying those bills. How many of all the teams at the U even break even?

I thought the 5 guys dinkytown location closed down? Which one are we pulling from?

1. Brad Brownell-Clemson. This is a reach too. But he's been there a long time, been on the hot seat a couple times and the ACC might be UNC or FSU bolting away from chaos. Would have to pay him a Fleck-ian salary though.
That's an interesting list, with some great candidates.

I'm surprised Brad Brownell is #1 on your list. He's been to four (4) NCAA tourneys in 14 years at Clemson and as you said if not for a big buyout would have been fired at least twice. Not exactly the kind of guy who will blow people away and send people to the ticket office gobbling up season tickets. I think that hire would be a big ho-hum for many Gopher fans. He's a pretty boring guy, too.

Don't get me wrong, we could do worse, but I am not sure Brad Brownell should be #1 on anyone's list, especially given what the Gophers would have to pay him to leave. There should be other guys much higher on the list for that kind of dough, in my opinion.

What the fu ck is going on here

We deserve to suck if people are going to keep tossing out insane ideas
With this defeatist attitude the Gophers will never be a contender. The world is full of people who think they can't accomplish things, but it is led by those who think they can.

Basketball is a sport that can change with one recruiting class. The B1G is a very attractive conference to coaching in, if you want to compete with the best.

NOBODY is un-getable!!!

Well he's not really #1, since for the $$ it would take to get him, you might convince Dutcher or Musselman to come. But if not, I think he'd be a very sold hire. You're right though, he wouldn't re-ignite the casual fans right away. His flaws are why I think he's gettable in a way guys like Sean Miller, McDermott or Otzelberger are not.

No with this delusion the gophers would never be a contender

If the Gophers are setting their sights on guys like Kelvin Sampson leaving Houston to come here. The program is screwed

I'm legitaimately concerned you are even diving in on this to try and push back

Williams arena concessions are attempting to compete at that level as well... A hot dog and a coke is $13.00 or so.
That's why you go to Annie's before the game. Campus Pizza and Big Ten were the obvious choices due to proximity and food quality. Sad.

Watching Loyola, Drew Valentine would be another guy high on my list. Maybe he's waiting for Izzo to retire.

Big East has nowhere the money the Big Ten does. And, if you get the right coach in ticket revenue will increase significantly. I think you are way underestimating what the Big Ten dollars are and will continue to be compared to others. Not having football will be a significant disadvantage over time for the Big East schools.
