Firsthand impressions of Phil Nelson....

You guys seem to forget the huge adjustment to college from high school not counting being a big time FB player. Remember when Kill said Shortell kind of hit the wall? It's not unusual kids especially QB's need at least a red-shirt yr, usually 2 yrs. regardless of talent, just in maturity.

I agree. I should have probably put that into my initial post. I hope no one thought that I was hinting that he should be the starter next season. I thought he was impressive and I think he'll compete with Shortell and maybe Foreman in 2013.

Chandler Harnish runs about a 4.7, so 4.6 is still plenty fast for Kill's offense. I think in Kill's offense, it's more about quickness than flat-out speed.

Nelson will have a spring practice, so I'll let the "to redshirt or not redshirt" question sit.

Okay it's settled. Shortell starting qb, Gray and Nelson wideouts. Unstoppable!

With all these qb's that can play other poaitions we could have one of the craziest wildcat options ever.

We would be the most unpredictable team in the nation! Don't forget about Maxx Williams. Doesn't he play QB for Waconia?

Adam Lueck at C for the center-around option pass.

Oddly enough, other programs have been recruiting a ton of QBs and having depth/changing their positions for years.

Best athlete on most high school teams is the QB. Probably less so now than when rural Minnesota wasn't drained of populations, but likely still somewhat true.

I think it's much more obvious in 9-man then in other classes. After watching Class A football the past few years there are a few teams where it is obvioius their past athlete is the QB but I saw more where it was a RB or LB. I do remember while waiting for my school's semi-final game to start there was a 9-man game that was going down to the wire and the team that was down had the ball at like the 3 and it was fourth and goal. They put one of their WRs at QB and moved their QB to WR because it was clear he was the best athlete. Also, the 9-man state championship game that year had the QB of the winning team rush for a ridiculous amount of yards (state record, but I don't remember). The other team's defense couldn't touch him he was so athletic.

Speaking of changing positions of hs qb's, I remember a quote from Weber's mom that she was really worried that's what Mason would do to her son... Obviously, it happens when the qb's are among the best athletes on the team.

Some had Weber pegged to play safety, which I think he played at least some of the time in high school.

His dad played CB at the U in the 1970s.

One yr. Murray recruited ( fr squad had around 100 players) 15 QB's and 11 FB's. Found size and athleticism. Bobby Bell was a 8 man QB. John Williams was a FB and a DE and OT.
