Fire Orlando "Tubby" Smith

Tweet from Amelia:
Smith on whether he has an indications that his job is in trouble: "No." #Gophers

I know it's got to be asked but I don't think anyone can expect anything more than that no matter what he thinks or knows. I don't know of any coach who would say "yeah I might be fired."

First tourney win in 20+ years and you guys really think he's getting fired? LOL, get real.

He should've been let go a couple years ago when it became apparent that his ceiling is about .500 in the B10, but at this point he's just going to remain comfortable in his mediocrity, and it'll continue to be a third-tier B10 program.

Tubby's not getting fired, not after winning a game in the NCAA's. A lot will hinder on landing the big three and with Tubby there's a chance without with the way basketball recruiting works, it's a three year process with these blue chippers at least. We have no shot with a new guy because if won't be Shaka or Stevens. I'd rather have a shot at the big three than no shot so for now Keep Tubby

WHODAT?

this is about the dumbest response anyone could render. A practice facility is not a financial investment that yields big returns. It's an effin donation to your school because you love your school and want to see it prosper, it's not a stock or bond investment you idiot. Vision or no vision any rich old man that follows basketball knows a practice facility is essential to being competitive. So if you love your school enough, pony up otherwise shut up. It's really that simple. One could even start his own fund among his rich friends if he supposedly doesn't like the current AD. It's just the reality that there isn't enough private captial to get it done.

Also in alumni relations 101. The "ask" is the toughest part of the job. Sure, they may cut a check but there is a reason behind it. Thats why there is an entire development office in nearly every college and department on campus. Going up to alums and asking for money right away will lead to people quickly ignoring you (e.g. every cold call from CLA). Teague is a development specialist and understands this. "Wealthy" people don't piss away money, thus the reason why they are wealthy. It is an investment because the returns are different and they can write it off donations in their taxes. ( I wont even get into the complexity of that). 1) Evaluate potential to donate 2) Relationship 3) Ask 4) Develop Giving plan 5) get straight cash homie.

Basically it's sales.

Edit: Oh, and the point that there isn't enough capital is a moronic argument because there are more than 400,000 living alumni. I guess T. Denny (who Teague has been courting) isn't enough capital even though he has a health care delivery system named after him.

HURRRRRRRRR

Agree with a lot of what's being said, whatever decision Teague makes he's gotta make it quickly and decisively.

If Tubby does come back a staff shakeup seems inevitable.

Teague can't fire a coach with Smith's reputation without having a slam dunk pick ready to step right in.

This. I work in a development office at the U. It is crazy how much my boss hustles. It's not an easy job, but she is damn good at it. We built a new lab to replace the one that had been around for a long time. There was a lot of strategic planning, relationship building, selling a vision, etc involved. It took some time to secure the funding. The new lab was a need as the equipment used in the old lab is obsolete to what is currently used in the field. Even though the need was huge, the funding took a lot of time and effort. It's not as simple as some may think.

This. Plus, working on funding a practice facility takes away from other priorities.

When Norwood laid out all the facilities needs, it was a long list. Just listening to it, I felt overwhelmed. Imagine being him. I think it's just too easy for people to sit on this board and post as if it's a simple matter of Jeannie blinking and it appears.

T. Denny is becoming the Tony Dungy of big donors. He has plenty of money, but if he wanted to spend $20 million of it on a practice facility he'd have done it by now. He's already scratching his itch to build arenas with his name on them in Sioux Falls.

I think he should be fired now.

However, my guess is they want to see what happens in October to see who they get to commit here. Then if they don't get a good recruiting class, Tubby will get fired after next season.

My guess is they're afraid that if they get a new coach they will have no chance at the new recruits. Just a guess.

Do you think recruits want to play for a coach who is very much on the hot seat like Tubby is? Would you sign with a school who has a coach that might not even be there by the time you step on campus? I wouldn't. Too much uncertainty. I like Tubby. Great guy, but it's time for a change.

...Jeannie blinking and it appears.

Major Tony Nelson had to be the gayest character ever. You've got Barbara Eden prancing around in her little outfit saying "Oh Master" all day, and you don't try to hit that?

At least Major Healey was taking a run at her.

Who can argue with that? I gotta think it's a metaphor for something, but I haven't been able to figure out what.

Where it gets interesting if he does land a couple of them than he won't be on the hot seat no matter his record next year.

A lot of the posts on here seem to ignore the issue of longevity. How much more program building will this head coach do, even if conditions were ideal? Teague's decision, provided he has not already made it, must take into account how likely it is that Smith will be here long enough to further impact this program in a significant way. I mean, if he's planning to retire after the current contract expires, wouldn't that help determine an administrator's patience level?

Tough decision, year wasn't a complete cluster eff but the next two years are critical, might not have the recruiting talent that these classes posses for a long time, my fear is that you keep Tubby and end up losing out on everyone from these two classes. Then you are really starting over again in a couple of years.

What's been most concerning is the lack of role players or players who specialized in a skill, more specifically shooters and ball distributors. Most teams have them, Tubby overlooks them and grabs athletes. Last night was a perfect example of how this was lacking, the fundamentals of this team are truly atrocious. If it weren't for Dre Hollins going insane we could've easily lost that game by 30-40 points. Whether Tubby is back or not we need to figure out:

-What does Joe Coleman do for this team? Should he be a starter?
-Where is competent pg play going to come from?
-Is anyone going to have a come to Jesus talk with Mo Walker?
-How can recruiting be altered to ensure this team adds shooters?

like any yearly review..
the only thing that matters is whether he met his 'goals' from last years evaluation.

everything else ( recruiting, player improvement, etc ) are subjective.

so if he met any of five goals he agreed to a year ago, he's a lock to stay... otherwise its a lawsuit if he's cut.

How is it a lawsuit if he is fired? That is why there is buyout language in the contract....

buyout <> fire

of course if there is a buyout clause, the U can exercise it..
but i thought the topic of the thread was 'fire'.

Ooh, I love these! I'll play!

"If it weren't for Florida going insane in the first half + our foul trouble, we'd be prepping for FGCU this morning"

You see? it works both ways

It doesn't as we played so poorly on offense the first half.

He made up for it when he got to Dallas as JR.
