The season is now over, after 6 years it's now appropriate to create a thread calling for Tubby Smith to be fired. One of the great disappointments in Minnesota sports history.

Love Tubby. Great effort tonight. Needs to step up the recruiting though.

I don't want to start another coaching search until construction has begun on a practice facility.

Great recruit. Props to tubby for him getting him, but he coud use some work overall.

Strategically it's not the right time. Next year we will suck. We can cut the cord on Tubby after we miss the NIT. This will soften the blow to our reputation from firing a nationally esteemed coach, and give us another season to work on the practice facility.

None of this necessarily applies if Flip takes over immediately.

I have had the same thought. Next year looks like a 5-6 win conference season and much easier to make a move on the coach after that.

Terrible reasoning. Always make the move the instant the decision is made. The buyout doesn't even go down. If you've decided he's not the best guy going forward, do it now.

We are going to stink next year.

So there is no reason other than $$$$.

Woah....

I would agree with the beginning and premise of this thread, but considering Minnesota's sports history, common might have a candidate for most preposterous statement of the year....

Why wait to hit rock bottom? Bye bye Orlando. Hello someone who wants to be here and has a shot at the big three (Flip).

Time for Tubby to retire. Mr Teague needs to create his own mark. The Gophers are ranked in the Top 20 in total athletic department revenue and need to get to the next level in the BIG and nationally. Quality Athletics helps market a University in the broadest sense of the word. Unlike the previous regime, the current administration finally recognizes this fact. We also need boosters to be excited about "investing" in a new practice facility. The best way is to energize the base is with a new coach. I for one would like Flip Saunders to be our coach as he will not leave us for a better opportunity. Good Bye Tubby! Time to retire and enjoy the millions you have bilked while you were preparing for your retirement by taking our tax dollars for the last 6 years....

I disagree. Next year with Tubby we will have about the same record if not better in the Big Ten. Nothing against Rodney but I think he's not hard to replace. Trevor is where you lose something but it willbe a different team, taller with more shooters on the floor. I think we will be fine. Without Tubby, hard to say how we do, there's a much bigger possible range of outcomes depending on who leaves and who the new guy brings.

get him to walk. there's always a way. spending another season with someone whose future here is inevitably shutting down is pretty costly in many ways.

As I said on the other thread I think Tubby is a good coach and it just didn't quite work out here. I'll always wonder what the 2009-2010 team could have been if Trevor/Royce weren't idiots and/or we had a better AD and how it would have gone differently after that. But what happened, happened.

The way the last two season collapsed down the stretch and the current red flags in recruiting make this a very difficult decision if I were Teague. I think we can do better than Tubby, but we can also do worse. After an obligatory call to Shaka/Stevens I would give Flip the job if he will take it for a reasonable salary and give him 2-3 years to see what he can do and if he can land any of the big 3. If it's not working out, we can go the younger route at that time.

I agree. I don't see an utter collapse next year. Dre should get better. Otto and Mav can't really do any less. Elliot can do more. And hopefully Buggs/Wally/Foster/Ellis contribute. We'll miss Trevor a lot. We won't miss Rodney much at all, sadly.

A danger of a coaching search is, do Ellis and Foster bail? Does Dre transfer? If the later happens we're looking at a 4-12 B1G record. But you can't base the decision on that, I guess.

If they fire him they have to know they'll get someone good (Flip, Shaka) to replace him and have the ability to land at least one of the big three. Tubby got the program from bottom of the B1G to living on the bubble. They need someone that can take the next step to becoming a yearly tourney team in the top half of the B1G, and occasionally contending for a B1G title. Tubby can't be fired only for the new coach to start over.

LOL...Unbelievable.

Totally agree.

I agree. However, given that our choices for next year's prospects are somewhere between mediocre and just plain bad, it's a matter of long term versus short term imo. If we keep him, somebody will say its about money. But it certainly looks like this team is going nowhere with or without Tubby at the moment. Maturi would NEVER have fired Smith under these circumstances. Teague doesn't seem as hesitant to pull the trigger and seems more willing to take chances. We'll see just how much so in the coming days.

I don't see this as an easy decision for Teague. I do see some valid opinions on both sides. Whichever way he goes, he needs to be decisive and quick. It would be best if this decision were made previously and he's operating from a plan of action. I mused on another post that I wouldn't be surprised if he's been in touch with Flip and even told him, "Be ready." I stick by that. The degree to which Flip has been active and visible around town is eye opening. Did he really chat up Tyus after the HS championship game?
