An aside here. ...

For the record, for Power 5 programs my ballpark benchmark for an acceptable (or better) non-conference schedule is in no worse than the 150-160 range. There are exceptions, of course, both ways, but that's my general rule. That's always my goal for the Gophers, though they rarely attain it.

I like that you qualify this statement. To me, the average is less important than having a few (at least 3) resume building opportunities. Said another way, it doesn't matter to me if you scheduled a lot of opponents in the 240s or the 320s - those should all be cakewalks - as long as you've got those top 50-ish games.

Also, scheduling a weak P5 like Depaul or an AQ from a weak mid major like Montana St. impresses me not. It'd be interesting to re-do by quads rather than straight ranks (not asking, nor volunteering).

Great points.

I should've included my other general rule of thumb. ... want to see these programs play 5 or 6 games where there's at least a fair chance they can get beat. Like you said, the rest can be cupcakes as far as I'm concerned, but if you're a Power 5 program and you're playing 3 or less "tough" games (whether you play 11 or 13 non-con games), you're a pu**y in my book.

The Gophers have their fans reaching for the barf bags with yet another embarrassing non-conference slate. This one checks in at #51. ... yipeeeee! There's no excusing this schedule, even after last season's non-conference worst-in-the-nation (#362 of 362) debacle. I will accept no excuses from the head coach or the AD. ... Year 4 and still scheduling for a NIT bid.

For the record, for Power 5 programs my ballpark benchmark for an acceptable (or better) non-conference schedule is in no worse than the 150-160 range. There are exceptions, of course, both ways, but that's my general rule. That's always my goal for the Gophers, though they rarely attain it.

I contend that the number of high-end games is more important than scheduling some plus-300 games that can be used for experience for young guys. St. Mary’s ranked higher than Illinois due to not many bad games but Nebraska is one of their best games. Illinois plays Duke, Alabama, Arkansas, Tennessee, Missouri. That’s a tougher schedule than St. Mary’s. Illinois could go undefeated against St. Mary’s schedule. Not a chance they will against their foes. But they also will be better prepared in the long run. Some breather games are deserved.

Which is exactly why I stated my qualifier.

I like the Illini's schedule, and even said that in my Illini schedule lead-in.
