Final Field of 12 projection (what I think committee will do & what I would do)

The biggest mistake of the playoff was a 12 team playoff with only 5 autobids

It should be a 12 team playoff for any conference champ in top 25…up to 9.

This year there would be 6 with 6 at larges

If they were only going to have 5 autobids they should’ve made it an 8 or 10 team playoff.

I'll quibble with this. I like 5 auto bids. There's really only two AAA power conferences now in the SEC and BG10, a AA power conference in the ACC, and the A/JV power conference in the BG12. 5 auto bids are pulling in some teams that might not otherwise be considered in the actual top 12 if not for the CFP in the back of voters minds.

For example, Clemson would not be the top 12. Would ASU jump Alabama if not for CFP? I don't think Boise and maybe even SMU would be in if the voters didn't know about the auto bid. Liberty and Tulane had gaudy regular season records last year and didn't sniff the top 12.

IMO, the playoffs either stay at 12 with the current 5 auto bids, or expands to 24 with 8 or more auto bids. I like the first round byes being given to the highest rated conference champions.

I’m fine with only 5 autobids if the playoff was 8 or 10 teams.

Positives and negatives to the SMU pick over Alabama.

Positive: It validates the playing of conference championship games.

Negative: It diminishes strength of schedule. We won't be seeing SEC teams adding a 9th conference game nor scheduling tougher non-conference games.

SMU at 11 got a lot easier draw than Indiana at 10 and Tennessee at 9

#10 Indiana has Notre Dame, then brackets into Georgia. #9 Tennessee drew at Ohio State, then Oregon.

SMU has overrated Penn State, then brackets into Boise State. They were the big winners of the draw.

Wow - the two team format was not fair - the four team format was unfair and now the 12 team format (which was supposed to fix the problem) is really unfair - Saban is going off on college football in general - scheduling, NIL etc…

I do struggle a bit with four teams from the BIG getting in though - but go play the games now baby!!

I don’t think it diminishes SOS

Alabama even being considered means SOS and quality wins can minimize losing to a team that would’ve been 5-7 by 21 without scoring a touchdown in November

Clemson, SMU, ASU are all about .500 in the Big Ten or SEC. Boise and Notre Dame would have at least three losses (just like Alabama and Ol Miss). There’s enough data out there to know these things.

Why would the Big Ten and SEC want to continue this playoff system?

Get real.

If you have three losses....then you don't have a leg to stand on. Teams "left out" can whine all they want. They didn't handle themselves like national title contenders during the season. Enjoy your bowl game and do better next year.

and this is why teams in the SEC and Big Ten will need to just cancel all their hard NC games, protect their record and take the SMU path.

Will probably get there eventually.....
I doubt it because doing so will devalue half those 30 teams. Somebody has to lose the games played. That league would pretty quickly move to the mean a couple ways. One where there are 4-6 really good teams, 4-6 pretty bad teams and a jumble of the rest on the middle. The other where parity takes over and you have a pretty large majority of teams with 3-4 losses

SEC bubble teams left out have the same complaint long held by strong conferences in FCS and D3 where weaker conferences still get auto bids over stronger conference teams left out (not an issue in D2). Regardless, the best half dozen or so teams that have any chance of winning it all are in the playoffs.

As others have pointed out....when it comes to the two and three loss teams still in the mix....SOS is what keeps them in the conversation. So they can go the weak non-con schedule route and end up missing out anyways.

This argument keeps coming up now. It makes absolutely no sense.

Alabama didn’t lose any noncon games.

Georgia played Clemson and yet they are in.

Texas played Michigan and they’re in.

Don’t lose three games. Especially to 6-6 teams. It’s that simple. The whole system is set up for BT and SEC teams to have all the advantages. Just don’t lose to bad teams. Simple.

this. you actually are almost never punished for "good" losses. Oddly enough, there can only be so many teams that win 10 teams in a conference. really what the prior poster is arguing for is that Bama should go independent, schedule no one but MAC and lower level teams and go 12-0 every year.

I believe I heard Saban say that no 3 loss team should make the playoffs...talking about Alabama towards the end of the week.
