Updated above

Maryland added a non-conference home game vs. non-Division I Bowie State on Feb. 9.

I wonder how the RPI averages would look if you take the BT/ACC challenge game out. The better teams are usually going to be ranked higher because they will play better teams in the challenge.

Interesting thought. I'll figure that out and post it, if not today then tomorrow.

Here are the numbers excluding each team's ACC Challenge opponent

Average RPI of All Opponents (excluding ACC Challenge)
1. Maryland (166.636)
2. Wisconsin (169.181)

Note that I give all non-Division I opponents a RPI of #352, one lower than the worst RPI, #351 Grambling, who happens to be on OSU's schedule.

Not much of a shake-up in the numbers though the difference high to low in the Big ten did drop from 97 rpi points to about 81 points.

While I know that people who pay for tickets would like to have a top 75 home game, from someone who doesn't live in MN and can't go to the games anyway I can't complain about the schedule this year(middle of the pack BIG rpi average). Given this year's team's age and expected performance I would only have liked a true road game in an atmosphere that would get us ready for the BIG season.

That's fair. Agree about the no road game. That to me is the biggest issue for this particular team (young & inexperienced). A young team, especially, needs to have been been punched in the mouth in a hostile environment before they start conference play.

Temple is the most important game on the non-conference schedule. Win that and it'll turn out to be a really solid overall schedule. Lose it and it goes the other way.

So you have been griping about the U's schedule and they have the 7th toughest schedule in the B1G. Sounds like and average B1G schedule to me.

Overall SOS and the dregs that show up to the Barn to extort the season ticket holders is not the same issue.

The SOS was for home non-conference games. Precisely the games you are talking about.

No, I harp on the fact we never schedule a decent home game (read: home-and-home) outside of the one we're required to play (ACC). Simple, really. I don't really harp on where Gophers end up in these averages. I let others interpret that info however they want. I tend to emphasize how rarely we see Power 6 and/or top-75 type teams in The Barn (in November-December).

Thanks for doing that SS. I figured there would be more of a difference.

SS, thanks for all of the work. It would be nice to have some better NC home games, but we just need to keep it in perspective. The way most people talk you would think that the U has the worst home NC schedule and the the U is the only team that does it that way. The truth is that most every school does the same thing and to chastise the U for doing it is not fair. It is epidemic of all college basketball. And the fact is that if we took away 2 of those weak games and played power conference schools, but lost, and missed the tourney. Instead of fans griping about the weak games the coach would get fired because his record isn't as good as the schools that play the weak schools.

Fair enough. No need for us to continue to go back-and-forth here. Let's agree to disagree. If Richard delivers on that Louisville home-and-home he's been mentioning, I think everyone would be happy!
