If I’m an Iowa fan, I gotta like ferentz continuing to be the coach as frustrating as the offense would be at times. Minnesota will be better off when Kirk ferentz retires
 




He’ll be 74 at the end of the contract. If this keeps Brian Ferentz as OC for 8 more years, I’m good. We have the talent to beat Iowa; just need to break the psychological barrier. The year we open up and play Iowa “to win” rather than “not to lose,” the hex will be broken.

You think these two extensions are comparable?

one gave fleck a 2 year extension and a barely over inflationary raise the year after he took a voluntary cut


the other made ferentz a top 15 highest paid coach in the nation and is until 2029.



not saying either is good or bad, but they aren’t even the same type of extension.

MN has been below mediocre for long periods in the stretch.

We've closed gap. Just need start winning

Not counting the covid year which was not a complete season......fleck has 32 wins in 4 seasons at Minnesota.........that's 8 wins a year

Fleck has been Iowa for the most part. And yes, he hasn't beaten them, but sometimes you have a team that you play where you can't get out of your own way.

Iowa has been basically mediocre during the Ferentz tenure.

Wisconsin on the other hand.....................

Unfortunately that mediocrity has lead to 7 straight wins over our Gophers. Hopefully the tide changes in 2022!
 

Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz has disbanded an alumni advisory committee that was created after a 2020 investigation found evidence of racial bias against Black players in his program and bullying behavior by some of his assistants.

The Gazette in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, reports that Ferentz's decision to end the committee came shortly after its leader, former offensive lineman David Porter, suggested it was time for Iowa to part ways with the coach. But Ferentz said he had decided to overhaul the committee last fall before Porter made his comment to other committee members in a text message.

"I have come to a decision that this is an appropriate time to dissolve our committee as it stands currently," Ferentz wrote in an email to the 10-member committee Tuesday. "As we start a new calendar year and prepare to move forward with our preparation for the 2022 season, I am giving thought to how we restructure the committee/board in a way that best serves our program moving forward."

Ferentz said in a statement to The Gazette that Porter's suggestion was not related to his decision to disband the committee.

"Dave Porter did not share his sentiments with me directly," Ferentz said. "I was surprised and disappointed by his comment and wish him the best moving forward. His comment had no influence on the decision regarding the advisory committee."

In 2020, the university hired the Husch Blackwell law firm to review the program after dozens of former players, most of them Black, spoke out on social media to allege racial disparities and mistreatment. Their activism came as protests against racial injustice swept the nation following the murder of George Floyd and after attempts to raise concerns inside the program resulted in only minor change.

The report said that some of the football program's rules "perpetuated racial or cultural biases and diminished the value of cultural diversity."

The program cut ties with longtime strength and conditioning coach Chris Doyle after agreeing to pay him a $1.1 million severance, but Ferentz resisted making other changes to his staff. Doyle has denied allegations that he bullied and discriminated against players..

Mediocrity comes from the word meaning medium, middle or average. A 6-6 record is a mediocre one. A 9-3 (or 9-4) record isn’t mediocre, not even close. A history of 9 wins on average annually over a long period in a college schedule isn’t mediocre. It is actually very good.

Especially when their recommendation is to fire the head coach and AD. The same AD who then gave the head coach a new contract extension as an F You to the committee before they ignored all of their recommendations and dissolving it.

I mean if the purpose is to improve the culture and they say the solution is to fire you…why would you want to continue on that committee

A waste of everyone’s time.


Kirk might be in the wrong about some things generally…but the council was stupid if neither side actually wanted to work together in good faith.

I’m skeptical of the environment at Iowa in that area, but apparently there’s been a power struggle with Kirk and that group about demands that the staff fill out surveys on command and so on. The committee chair thought it was time to fire the entire staff and AD….. but I’m pretty sure that’s not his call.

Can we all agree that if we had to choose we would take Iowa's recent past vs Minnesota's recent past. However, this does not mean we can't argue that our future is much brighter with an extension to Fleck that it is to Kirk. What matters is that our win totals, our players going to the NFL and our recruiting rankings keep going up. At Iowa they are leveling off or decreasing. I have a feeling Iowa buys out this extension before they see it come to its completion.

We do need to beat Iowa, but I would take our future with Fleck vs. Iowa's future with Kirk any day of the week.

I think they’re both better fits for their respective universities

I don’t think Kirk would have the same success at Minnesota. He would be awful with twin cities media. I’m not sure fleck would be received as well by the Iowa fan base that he is by minnesotas.

it is possible they are both really good coaches. I personally think there are 12-14 good coaches in the big ten. (Only two I’m not sold on is Maryland guy and Indiana guy…I even think frost is a pretty good coach in spite of record)
