Fargo Forum: Johannesson can’t resist Big Ten's Gophers

I do see what you are saying, but granted some of the players who helped NDSU to their 4th title are yet to attempt to go to the NFL. They might add to their #'s in the NFL as well?

But I am not one sided in my thinking about this issue, I have a ton of thoughts about it, but have too often in the past been far too long winded with my posts and I am trying to limit my posts. So I am only posting what I believe is a side of the issue not yet represented.

I agree with everything just one small thing I would add.

NDSU has 6 players in the NFL right now after winning 4 FCS championships in a row. Think about that. A national champion 4 YEARS IN A ROW with ONLY 6 players in the NFL. In my opinion that sounds like a peak for an FCS school. Yet only 6 players in the NFL. Gophers have 6 players in the NFL because of the lean Tim Brewster years. As of 2015 NFL draft that's gonna change. Can you find any FCS school with more than 6 NFL players right now?
Mason didn't put a lot of players in the NFL either I would guess six at one time would have been more than his average.

Let's get one thing straight: Nobody has ever chosen ndsu because they thought it was the best way to advance to the NFL. My guess is this kid chose ndsu because it was closer to home or because he's not that serious about football and didn't want to go through the rigors and punishment of REAL D1 football.

While the gophers have 6 players currently in the nfl the bison have a measly.... 6 players in the nfl currently
And 2 headed to the combine
While the gophers have 3
So the nfl placement is not a selling point for the gophers
All that said if I were this Fargo kid it would be a no brainier for me
M I N N E S O T A
I would want to play at the highest level

Why all the hating on Ellefson? The kid had a ride offered twenty miles up the road and chose to play in front of family and friends.

Maybe he was an Ag major and didn't feel like Purdue was his school.
Maybe he he didn't feel like he was NFL material didn't feel the need to go FBS.
Maybe he liked his mom's cooking and could get his laundry done on the weekend.

Some of the posters around here act pretty pompous when it comes to deciding what is best for people other than themselves.

The real question about this kid, will he play RB or LB? I know the coaches are all saying RB now, but is he fast enough to be a legit B1G RB? Sorry to interrupt the pissing match.

OK...as a very active reader and not so occasional poster, this is an entertaining thread. My grandpa used to say "Throw a rock into a pack of dogs and the one that barks is the one that got hit...".
There are a few barking right now.

Let me share the perspective of an 18 year old. My son is a D2 (and low D1) caliber HS athlete in a different sport. He gets tons of attention from the successful D3 schools, some from D2, and recently NDSU. He is academically accepted to UW-Madision, Northwestern and UM-TC (my alma mater) and he wants to be an engineer, but holds no offers for this sport from these schools. According to this recent engineering ranking, NW is top 26, Madison is ranked in the top 23, UM ranked in the top 20. He has a chance to walk on for his sport to U/M, but it is not final yet. But yet, my son (3.9gpa) wants to consider NDSU. Simply because they are interested and he can say he has a D1 offer. It appeals to the ego of an 18 year old. He also thinks he would play more than he would at the U of M with a walk on.

He is leaning towards the academic side right now. A degree from any of the Big Ten engineering schools is much more valuable in eyes of employers. So I get why a local kid gets swept off his feet with a D1 offer, especially over walk on offer. I am guessing the Purdue coaches told him he would get some type of offer (sometimes it can be partial) or indicated he would be redshirted and needed a lot of development to play. In his eyes, that NDSU offer now looms large. Kids don't think like adults yet.

I'm fairly certain D1 FBS scholies can't be partials like they can be in lower divisiobs

per the Fargo Forum:

In the eyes of North Dakota State football fans, James Johannesson is the one who got away. And with four straight national championships to brag about, NDSU coaches do not lose too many recruits these days.
Go Gophers

Lol. Ya, they don't lose many recruits.

Except the ones that have FBS offers. Pretty much all of those.

I forgot about that, FBS schools cannot divide up the scholarships. FCS schools like North Dakota can. Each FBS school can hand out up to 25 new schollies per yr.

You may want to suggest your kid focus on his degree and get a student pass to the games. I know a few families who kids went to play college sports (hockey, swimming/diving, gymnastics, etc). All of these kids were the best in their HS (placed highly in state meets), but they were not quite good enough to be a stars on the college team. Many of them get burned out real quickly from the full-time job of college athletics and most stopped playing after their freshman or sophomore years and gave up their scholarships. The demands put on the students all year round along with the traveling by bus to games/meets can really put a crimp in your studying for Engineering, Calculus, Physics, etc. Also, in college, if you are not a marquee sport you do not get the same level of support or understanding from the professors. I am just adding that you may want to make the choice of schools more on his degree and not on what team he could play on. I am not saying it can't be done, and by all means if your kid still has the passion and discipline to play and keep his grades up then he should try it. Also, the ranking of engineering schools is not that big of a deal (grades are more of a big deal), he should go to one he likes.

Great post.

NDSU, when recruiting within its footprint, has had very good success vs FBS G5s. NDSU would have been the #2 ranked G5 team last year. So what's so impossible with recruiting Vs FBS, it doesn't mean jack unless you are upper crust P5. Most of the MO Valley wins some recruiting battles vs the Mac regularly.

As for NDSU academics, it continues to grow and improve every year, it's not the school it was in the 80s and 90s.

FCS schools win a recruiting battle with an FBS school here and there. BIG DEAL!..NDSU plays in front of 17,000 people in a hockey arena in a conference without a national TV contract. WHY? Because NO ONE CARES!

Right, and that is why ESPN College Game Day has been to Fargo TWICE!!!

Well, maybe they "did" send more, just like Minnesota sent fewer. NDSU has 6 former players playing in the NFL right now, same as Minnesota and 2 of our guys are first year players, so not sure if NDSU had more than us last season or not?

And how many of the Purdue's players are from PU's heyday? They have 17 in the NFL. NDSU is still a fairly recent thing.

And # sent to the NFL doesn't always mean alot, as Indiana has more than Minnesota, 9 to 6, but who out there would rank IU as the better fb school?

And maybe Purdue was a bad example.

Akron has 2 in the nfl. Ball St has 4. NDSU has 6.

Buffalo has SIX(same as Gophers), BUFFALO, same as Gophers. Makes me want to cry, scream, fire some people(too bad I've not been in the position to do so) and many other angry and violent things.

Central Michigan has 9, E Michigan has 4, Houston has 7, Ill St has 4, Kent St has 9.

Connecticut has 19??? How in the hell???

Marshall has 9, Miami of Ohio has 3, N Ill has 6, Ohio U has 8.

Just for comparison, Mount Union has 3.

So many schools have more than NDSU, but alot of Div 1A schools have less than NDSU.

And NDSU has several wins over Div 1A teams in the last 10-15 years.
Do you just bang the keyboard with you forehead to create usernames?

What is a Fargo forum?..

They are stories in the front of the magazine. They purport to be real, but often have that "hey, how did that happen" moment that leads you to believe they are fiction. Before the Internet, they provided a good service to the dateless.

Wow, mention ND and the tempers rise. I'll welcome anyone JK wants from any state regardless of the offers. People grow up in an environment and it can be tough to choose one or the other.

Bison hockey huh? Now that would be amusing. Hahaha

Alright. I already don't give a flying F about this thread any longer. Take this boring ass north dakota fighting buffaloes talk someplace else rubes. :D

My, you can be disrespectful, can't you? How about a little civility in discussions here
