We've talked a bunch here about tearing down the Barn. Here's an even older arena being replaced. Matthews was built in 1910 and has far more history. It was the first home of the Celtics, Bruins, Whalers/Hurricanes, and was once home to all four of Boston's D1 hockey programs. Northeastern owns it and it has been home to their mens and womens hockey and basketball programs, but they've decided to replace it.

Will the Barn be next?

Sure hope not, and sure shouldn't be.

It also has a capacity of about 5,000 for basketball, even less for hockey

That may have played a part in their decision on facility and land utilization

I watched the piece on youtube last night. Sounds like there were serious structural problems. They built some strange exoskeleton on one side to keep it stable while they decided what to do.

I read that part of the foundation is also sinking.

Another interesting tidbit is the arena burned down in 1921 and was rebuilt.
