fake punt call in the illinois game

True but there was clearly something in how Illinois was lined up that Crawford was looking for and he saw it so he went for it.

As has been covered, it was Crawford's call. Fleck didn't tell him to do it, also didn't tell him not to do it. He took a chance because he thought he could make it and he would have if LeCaptain makes a block to slow down the only player on the field that had a shot of stopping him.
Agreed. I didn’t hate taking the chance.

I was at the game, so I don't know if this was discussed on the broadcast, but I believe that Illinois only had 10 guys on the field for the punt, with two deep and just eight on the line. Might be wrong, but I think that may have been part of what gave Crawford a favorable look.

It was worth the try, it just didn’t work this time.

Nice catch....wasn't mentioned on the broadcast but yeah, looks like they only had 8 on the line so with 2 back on return they would have been 1 short. Whether or not that is what Crawford saw or not is tough to say. Crazy part is if you watch the play they had one guy who just needed to turn around and he would have had Crawford dead to rights but he kept running downfield and eventually becomes the guy that #35 block instead of the guy who manages to get through and make the play. So close to working.....

2 guys miss making a block and he might still be running. I liked taking a chance. We don’t see that. We also won which might be tinting my rose colored glasses

Fleck is about to turn 44. His rule of thumb should be if the Punter is less than 15 years younger than him, no fake punts.

I posted this comment somewhere else, but I thought the punter took off just a moment too soon. It seemed the guy that got him was about to run himself out of the play.

If you win the game it gives the other team something to think about.
