Faalele Named to Watch List for Polynesian College Football Player of the Year Award

University of Minnesota offensive lineman Daniel Faalele was named to the 2021 Watch List for the Polynesian College Football Player of the Year Award today by the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame.

The Award is presented annually to the most outstanding college football player of Polynesian ancestry who epitomizes great ability and integrity. The Watch List is composed of 63 players from 31 different FBS schools.

Faalele, who hails from Melbourne, Australia, has played in 21 games for Minnesota and has started 19 of them. The 6-9, 380-pound tackle did not compete in 2020, but helped Minnesota’s offense put up history numbers in 20219.

That year, he helped block for an offense that totaled 5,616 yards (third most in school history), threw for 3,293 yards (school record) and scored 443 points (second most in school history in the modern era).

In 2018, Faalele played in 10 games and started the final eight of the season at right tackle, blocking for an offense that averaged 28.9 points per game (tied for second most in a season since 2005) and one that rushed for 23 touchdowns and threw for 20 touchdowns (first time since 2006 Minnesota reached 20 passing and rushing touchdowns in a season).

The Gophers start the season at home at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 2 at Huntington Bank Stadium against Ohio State. Minnesota recently announced full capacity for the upcoming season and tickets are available.

The winner of the 2021 Polynesian College Football Player of the Year Award will be announced on December 14. Five finalists will be unveiled on November 30. The presentation of the Award will be held during the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Week Celebration Dinner (January 21, 2022) at the Sheraton Waikiki, and they will also be recognized at halftime of the Polynesian Bowl (January 22, 2022).

The Watch List candidates have been selected based on past performance and future potential. Additions to the list may be made as the 2021 season progresses. The finalists and winner will be chosen by the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee which includes former NFL Player and Inaugural Inductee Jack "The Throwin' Samoan" Thompson (Chairman), Coaches Ron McBride and Dick Vermeil, former NFL Player and Inaugural Inductee Olin Kreutz, Inaugural Inductee and past NFLPA president Kevin Mawae, former NFL Player and Class of 2015 Inductee Ray Schoenke, ESPN Sportscaster Neil Everett, and NFL Network commentator Steve Wyche.
