So I’ve been thinking about Fleck and his contract. I’d extend him again. Add to the buyout, push it back another year and incentivize him even more to stay. With the 2020 season up in the air, lets do something positive. Show the university and fleck are here to stay. Make recruiting progress and get a headline when they are easy to get.

I don’t know. I’m bored and miss football.

He has a 7 year, $33 million contract deal that was just signed last season. What would you like to change? I know you're bored, but c'mon...

Coyles said that the last contract extension was began last summer... so that started before the huge 2019 season.

I assume that things are in line for another bump.

Outside of bigtime ultra contracts, most coaches end up renegotiating every year or two regardless of the length of the contract.

Personally I'd be happy to make a bigtime bet on PJ. Even if it didn't work out... it's our best odds / bet we've had a shot at in ... memory.

Some merit to this. Don't like hearing the rumors every year, full of energy, has the player's back and is doing very well I believe. He is also adjusting as he goes along. Bottom line: Good things are happening here even during the off season as to what he has done in reaching out to his players as he appears to be a techie guy.

I don't disagree with the merit of extending Fleck within the next year, but the athletic department is facing a multi-million dollar budget shortfall and the possibility of lost revenue extending into the fall. They will be making significant budget cuts across the department. I don't think that there is any way in the current environment to extend Fleck unless it's done without any increase in compensation. Even if Coyle had time to devote to this idea, which I doubt that he does, they would be smart not to announce anything until they get a better handle on the size of the crater in their budget.

It's the chicken and the egg thing.

Gotta make money and football is the big driver....

But need to save money ....

The Gophers could give PJ Fleck a 1,000 year contract and it's not any more able to keep him here than the current one, because the contract can easily be exited by either party. PJ Fleck might leave some day but it won't be for money or because he doesn't feel loved, it will be because he thinks he can win a title with a better recruiting wind at his back. No other reasons.

It would be insane to take on optional extra expenses while we're in the greatest moment of financial uncertainty for college athletics since at least WWII. Whole sports might die in this, and we're going to give their whole program budget as a 2nd raise in the past 6 months to by far the highest paid guy in the department?

Talk about a winner-take-all society run further amok.

I don't think that it has anything to do with chickens or eggs, it has to do with the optics of giving more money and security to the football coach when the rest of the department and the University as a whole are going to be asking the public and the legislature for money to bridge the current and anticipated future budget shortfalls. On a positive note, all of our peer institutions are more or less in the same boat, so there probably won't be much appetite for paying buyouts and offering monster raises to lure coaches for a while.

Here's an idea that might address both concerns: extend Fleck with a lower salary over the next year or two, but higher salaries over later years to make up the difference. This demonstrates that he's committed to being here long-term and is dedicated to the University and the athletic department, not just football. He shows the world (including recruits and their families) what a great guy he is and how certain he is that he's going to be here for a long time and helps the U through this short-term crisis while simultaneously locking in even more millions over time.

Winning is the best optics.

It's all about the buyout --- the contract may be for 7 years but it was created so that we'd have to pay Fleck again this year to prevent him from getting poached.

Total bullshit. If all you care about is the football team, it might make sense to announce a big, long Fleck extension, but if you care about the University and the athletic department as a whole, which Coyle, Gabel and the Regents all do, it would be a mistake. Besides, another Fleck extension before this year wouldn't result in any more winning.

I care about funding the athletic department and all the athletes. Football needs to be winning to do that.

But beyond that even if someone showed up and was a penny pinching AD ... and they're bad at sports games ... they're going to get fired.

Besides, another Fleck extension before this year wouldn't result in any more winning.

It could be a big difference if he chose to go somewhere else.

Are college sports a business? I say they are.

If a large company has many groups within their business, like Cargill for example, they’ll allocate resources to more successful ones that make money. If the University cut all programs besides Football, volleyball, women’s soccer, men and women’s hoops, men and women’s hockey, wrestling, baseball and softball—I don’t think many people would care. You remain Title IX compliant (I think football is exempt) and make up any budget shortfall you’re worried about. You’re just cutting a bunch of losses off your books. Its simple.

Sure, BTN has some say but they aren’t buttering their bread with gymnastics, swimming and lacrosse.

It isn't simple. Football counts. That's why the women's basketball team gives more scholarships than the men's team, why there are more softball scholarships than baseball scholarships and why we have a women's rowing team.

I don't think Coyle has really addressed this, but if he is of the belief that we have too many sports, this is his chance to make cuts. I am sure that some schools will address their budget shortfalls by cutting programs, but in recent history there has always been enough push back at the U that other solutions have been found.

Summer or year? You tell me.
The only way that Fleck leaving would impact this year's record would be if he left before (or I guess during) this season. That's extremely unlikely. I understand the need to extend his contract at the appropriate time and support that idea, I just don't think that time is now. After the season, if there is a season, there will be plenty of time to assess Fleck's contract and the status of the athletic department budget. That won't impact our record for the 2020 season.

I have read thread after thread on GH recently where many posters make it clear how much they hate when certain people lie, exaggerate, stretch the truth, etc., etc. no matter what the reasoning may be. This seemed like a decent thread to mention that observation.

Yep, extending a contract does not have to cost you any money until the year of that extension comes around. I'm all for extending it as soon as we can.

Schools will probably be cutting expensive non-rev sports (e.g., gymnastics) and to meet the minimum number required per NCAA regs, replace them with low budget teams (e.g., bowling).

I could be wrong, but didn't we just extend him 2 month ago? Imagine the press and the public seeing an extension and a raise for our football coach when 6M people are applying for unemployment. I don't think that's going to play very well and I also don't think there's any danger of Fleck leaving at this point in time. He's getting what he needs to compete at the highest levels and if we EVER get back to normal, the U can address the extension issue after we start playing again.

1) Fleck just signed a lucrative extension four months ago. There is zero chance anyone is getting a raise or contract extension right now.

2) The bigger question at this point will be whether PJ will be asked to give money back, especially if there is no season.

3) Iowa State just announced pay cuts for everyone in the athletic department, including the popular football coach, who was rumored to turn down overtures from Florida State. Other schools will absolutely follow this lead. Millions of everyday Americans are losing their jobs or taking paycuts.

4) Mark Coyle is on conference calls everyday with people trying to figure out how best to keep the world healthy, and wondering whether there will even be a football season. There is no way a contract extension is on the Top 1000 things Mark Coyle is pondering at this point.

My goodness.

I don't think I ever mentioned a raise but a lot of posters sure are mad at that idea that wasn't presented by me.

And for those of you that think Coyle is just fucking slammed--with what? A 2 hour conference call per day? He isn't attending games, he isn't hosting fundraisers, he isn't traveling...he is literally home all day every day. He isn't on the front lines knitting masks or working on a vaccine. Lets calm down about how much he has going on. He also has like 16 assistant ADs to handle stuff. IF he wanted to extend Fleck, there is PLENTY of time for him to do so. And he should.

Push the buyout, PJ takes a cut now, raises 2-3-4 years down the road, make this forever.

Yeah Coyles has a lot to think about maybe ... but none of the decisions on what happens are up to him nor is there much for him to 'do' about the unknown future.

Exactly. Thanks for making my point but more concise. I get wordy sometimes.

Should PJ Fleck get a contract extension?...I'll bring this topic up to my wife and get back to you; as soon as her and U are done "discussing" that dollar figure Gabel announced for the fee refund on our daughter's student housing/meal plan.

Different funds. They aren’t taking money from the athletic budget to pay student refunds.

Don't go to the OTB then.
