Exhibition Game Tonight: Chris Halvorson Returns to Williams Arena

Play of the game was our last possession before half. No timeout, but sort of familiar. Mav stood out by the half court line dribbling away. At about 10 seconds Elliot came out to set a pick. Mav goes left off of it. I think he just stumbled. Anyway, he went down and lost the ball. They picked it up and broke towards their basket. Elliot hustles back and gets a flagrant with a shove to the back of the guy going up for a lay-up. I quickly glanced to our bench to make sure Tubby hadn't made his way back to the Barn and was sitting on his old stool.

I was busy catching up with seat neighbors and not paying 100% attention, but I got the feeling that we were working on things and sets just to work on them. I thought Andre could score anytime he wanted and Dre could get into the lane and make a play every possession if he wanted and Mo or Elliot in the low post could turn and score at will, but they were looking for different options. Hopefully by design.
Dre is quick and fast. He needs to be to recover from all of the gambles he takes and misses on. Fun to watch tho. Would be nice to see him work on the handles a little bit, he had a couple too many turnovers, just dribbling it off his leg or losing it.
Mav is Mav. Doesn't look like he has bought into the "play fast" game plan. He is fine until he dribbles. Which is a tough way to play the game as a guard.
Was impressed with Joey King-- made plays.
It is good to see Mo Walker making athletic plays that he could not make in the past- good for him for a lifetime and good for the Gophers for the next couple of years.

I have no problem with Mav and he has gotten better every year. That said, it's very important McNeil beats him out at some point in time. McNeil is very much like Joe Coleman, except he's a defense first type and better ball handler.

Hard to get a good guage on where they are at based on the opponent tonight, but I did like how Walker and King played (in particular). Mathieu is leaps and bounds ahead of Maverick at the point already. Dre is so smooth - fun to watch.

The crowd tonight was embarrassing, maybe 40% full. The student section had maybe 100 kids not including the band. I heard a total of three feeble attempts at "We Want Reid".

However....Reid looked very at ease the whole game. He spent most of the game chatting it up with the dude sitting next to him, not sure who it was. He looked like he was completely at peace. I passed him in the hallway, gave him a slap on the back and "come play for us". He responded with "I got ya" and that was that. He was down with the team after the game.

I'd be disappointed if he wasn't a Gopher in four days.

It was a very high tempo contest and CSP wouldn't go away as the Gophers let them hang around. Dre got the offense going a couple of times but Mathieu sets the pace. He will be fun to watch and plays under control for the most part. Austin wasn't really involved much but was steady. King showed some moves on O and will see lots of PT and could start. The press had both its good and bad moments but overall I was disappointed the number of times CSP broke it and got quick points. Mo is working hard and we must keep him healthy as EE keeps on picking up dumb fouls. Rebounding will be a problem for this squad.

With the press and run, most of the guys will get plenty of PT, especially in the NC. McNeil & Buggs are on the far end of the bench at this point.

My guess for starters Friday are Hollins, Hollins, Mathieu, King and EE with Mo on deck and Smith and Oto in the hole. I was not impressed with Mav but he will get some PT as we have no one else. Wally may have played well enough to see the court in the first half.

Sad. Doesn't say much for our bench with a 3-guard lineup.

Thanks for the recaps guys.

Mo might have scored 17, but he didn't look all that smooth half the time. And more concerning is that he has trouble securing balls - rebounds and loose balls - and pulls the old Sampson trick too often of putting the ball on the floor and/or holding it at his waist while someone picks his pocket. Now I know what Richard keeps talking about when he says Walker has a ways to go basketball-wise. I expect EE to start Friday. Don't get me wrong: I'm very high on Mo, but he's a work in progress.

Man, I thought he had some very smooth moves tonight. So much more agility than h has shown in the past. Touch around the basket and much lighter on his feet.

EE is definitely more of a banger, but I think they will mix up styles nicely as matchups progress.

Half the time, like I said.

As far as the defense goes, I'll take the first half they had against Cardinal-Stritch. They were sharp and closed out on shooters in the half court. In terms of the full-court defense, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that they're not showing their "good move" yet.

Malik Smith is certainly not afraid to shoot. Hopefully he will know enough to rely on the Hollins' the nights he doesn't have it.

Agree. Mo gets tangled up a lot of times and seems a bit out of control. He needs to protect the ball. He doesn't play at a 6-10 level nor does EE. EE will start but will share PT with Mo.

Disagee. There were times when he looked like a BIG post player. Certainly he will improve with more PT and could be our #5 guy next season.

Howieramone: McNeil like Coleman?? I must have missed that one after watching the scrimmage and the two Xgames.

Buggs has been a disappointment thus far. Maybe he just needs more time to acclimate to the pace.

Nice to see Halvorson get some serious minutes at the Barn. It looked, for a spell, like he was going to out score Oto.

At what 'spell' was that? Chris had 1 bucket in 24 minutes. If he thought he would get a scholarship here, he must have lost his mind.

Not to mention, Oto scored 10pts (4of5) and grabbed 6 boards in only 14 minutes.

Also saw someone complain about DeAndre's turnovers, he had 7 assist and3 TOs, I'll take that any day.

I have the utmost respect and affection for Chris, but he was conspicuously one of the less skilled players on that Division II team last night. Glad we had him on the bench the last few years, as he's the best cheerer in the history of athletics, but I'm still not sure how he busted a Division I roster.

+1, He seemed like a smart kid and a great teammate. But he looked incredibly over matched in extended playing time yesterday.

Just to echo some other posters' thoughts, I thought Mo looked pretty good. He's got a lot more agility. There was a lot more attacking the boards, by Mo and our two fours, which was very encouraging. Granted, there was a lot less beef in the Concordia frontcourt, but still. I liked what I saw from both King and Oto. Both attacked the boards, both looked pretty aggressive around the bucket, and both were competent on D. Dre Hollins was his normal incredibly smooth self, but I do think he's going to struggle on D at times. Dre Mathieu is a more natural fit in this defensive system, and I really like what he's giving the team right now. Obviously, Hollins (both of them) are the offensive engine of this team, but I like how balanced we are. Malik Smith has seemed kind of lost out there. Hope he starts to fit in quickly. Buggs is a non-factor right now. He has absolutely no idea where to be on the court. If you see him in a game this year, watch where he goes, and where he's looking. It's kind of comical. Hopefully he gets it all figured out, because he has athleticism we're sorely lacking right now (I REALLY miss Trevor and Rodney). Elliot LOVES complaining about the refs. I love his hustle, but that intentional foul was not a good look. Kind of a dirty play. All in all, I thought this game went better than the last one, but it's clear there's going to be quite the adjustment period. I'm adjusting my expectations downward a little. I still think we've got an outside shot at an NCAA berth, but at this point, I'm just hoping for postseason play of any kind. Oh, and Reid, of course.

He had a full ride to Valpo

I did watch me some Buggs last night, and it was discouraging. There were a couple sequences where the ball handler had to direct him to where he needed to be to set a screen. All the other players know what to do out there; I would think they'll start to resent him for not doing his part in getting with the program. If I were Pitino, I'd be having the "What is it with you, son - ignorance or apathy?" talk with him.

Whenever I am asked that question, Bad, I answer that question with the logical answer: "I don't know and I don't care".

You can't claim I never gave you a straight line.

You watched Coleman start for 2 years and McNeil play for 25-30 minutes, I wouldn't expect you to see it. Since McNeil was Coach P.'s first recruit, I spent a fair amount of time watching film to see how he would fit in. Offensively he's very much like Coleman. Great finisher, but can't shoot. McNeil is the better ball handler. McNeil, like I said, is a defense first guy and good rebounder for his size, much like Coleman as far as rebounding.

I don't spend a lot of time studying tape, and frankly have little feel for Mason or Morris. If you review the 3 or 4 tapes on McNeil, you will notice he only takes 2 or 3 shoots further than 5 feet, but IMO does everything else well. I don't believe McNeil will ever be a starter, but in a 3 guard offense, I would like to see him as the fifth guard over Mav, at some point in time. He's a much better defender and ball handler than Mav. Mav blows him away as far as shooting the 3.

Exhibition replay is on BTN right now. I've only seen a few minutes from Mathieu and already love the kids game.

Forgot that was being rebroadcasted today, I set it to record like a week and a half ago. Hopefully I have time to watch that tonight.
