Ex-Vikings coach Mike Tice on Aireontae Ersery: 'This isn't my flavor'

Would this be the original location Bunny's? I closed that up several nights back in the day. Softball was a dangerous sport....always shocked in the morning how in the world I got home?
But as I started the new day, there was the car...almost in the driveway....each time. So sad.
I played softball for them too.

he's not technically sound or makes up for it with athleticism, raw.
I think "raw" would be appropriate for the above description of someone who hasn't had much coaching. Once you've had years of being coached, you are no longer raw.

Just my opinion.

Tice tried to start a fight at Bunny's over pull tabs with my buddy.

Drunk asshole. He was always a drunk asshole at Bunny's.

And my buddy is not much smaller than Tice at the time, and has a black belt. I would have like to see them tangle.
Black belt in what? If it's judo or jui jitsu, I think your friend wins easily.

Two unpopular opinions that I have regarding coaches in the Minnesota world:

1) Tim Brewster doesn't get nearly enough credit for what he did in building relationships with Minnesota High Schools. Yes, he was a poor head coach in a lot of categories, but the Gophers were in rough shape with a majority of the high schools and Brewster started building a relationship with them. Kill and Fleck have enhanced that relationship, but Brewster doesn't get enough credit for starting the relationships.

2) Mike Tice did a really good job with what he had to work with. I read a story about the end of the Red McCombs era. Basically Tice had half the coaching staff as other teams in the NFL and half the assistant coach budget. Red penny pinched every last bit out of the program during the Tice era and somehow Tice still finished his career with a record nearly .500 (32-33).

I'm not going to pretend I've broken down film on Ersery's techniques or anything and don't have strong opinions pro or con on what Tice said, but while Tice's reputation for buffoonery has a pretty solid factual basis, if there is any topic on which he has some credibility it's offensive line play. He was very well regarded as an NFL O-line coach and would have been better served to stay there rather than become a head coach.

Of all the things he was hired and paid to do.... That's like saying I don't get enough credit for bringing in food for the breakroom every now and then.
The counter argument is/was recruiting is the lifeblood of a program. Hard to beat your opponents when they are beating you in your own backyard. There probably isn't a better example than Wisconsin Basketball over the years vs. the Gophers.

I have no idea how much input Mike Tice had in these selections, but below are the OL drafted by the Vikings while Mike Tice was OL coach or HC.

Matt Birk - C
Jay Humphrey - OT
Mike Malano - OT
Lewis Kelly - OG
Bryant McKinnie - OT
Ed Taamu - OG
Chad Beasley - OT
Nat Dorsey - OT
Marcus Johnson - OG

A couple things really stood out, the Vikings did not draft many OL during the Tice era. It's probably because we hit on some real good ones prior (Stringer, Steussie, McDaniel, Christy, Dixon) and those players played for a long time.

The only mock I’ve seen him in the first round was USA Today. No others have him in the first.

The draft process is weird and doesn't make a whole lotta sense....
Declares for the draft and is projected 1st rounder (or top of 2nd round)
Has amazing tape from his final year in college
Has prototypical size for an OT
Plays against the best competition in the country and dominates (all-conference).
Goes to the combine and test off the charts (like historically good)
Keeps dropping on everyone's mock drafts???/

Why is he raw? He's a 3 year Big Ten starter. He's older than CJ Stroud. Is that on the Gophers or him or just a misconception coaches/scouts have?
Sometimes you're raw and sometimes you're real raw. He's only the former.

There are times watching, I'd kind of scratch my head and though why is he giving up on the play.
He should dominate more than he has. So I think Tice's assessment is valid.
