Evidently he’s way more of a big deal than we want to admit.

I participate in an online trivia competition called Learned League. 6 general knowledge questions each day and you are pitted against an opponent. Questions are tough and if you can get 50% right you’re competent at trivia and at 60% you’re pretty good.

Sports is a fairly common category, and college basketball comes up every now and then. I’m not gonna scour the entire questions database, but I’m pretty certain that if any college basketball coaches have ever been the subject of a question, they’re of the Dean Smith/Rick Pitino household-name level. But it’s not a sports-focused league, so you’ll never see a question about say Greg Gard or Matt Painter, although in the off-season there are focused competitions that could be all college basketball and include those guys.

But here was a Wednesday question: The current coach of the Chicago Bears shares a name with the Canadian sprinter who was stripped of the gold medal in the 100m dash at the 1988 Summer Olympics, as well as the man who served until March 2025 as the coach of the Minnesota Golden Gophers men's basketball team. What is that full name (first and last)?

Even if the question really wasn’t about him, you gotta admit, dude is in rarified company.

Why? Because he has a commonplace name and was one of the hints in a trivia question about another coach?

Actually, another Ben Johnson would have been a better clue since he was better known, an Oscar winner, and more popular and respected. He's shown below standing next to the Duke.

I'm 69 years old and never would have guessed who the actor standing beside John Wayne was with-out your post. Gotta admit, never heard of the actor Ben Johnson until just now. I'm totally aware of Ben Johnson the football coach and Ben Johnson the sprinter. Ben Johnson, the cowboy actor from the 1960's??? Guess you have to be a dedicated, old western movie buff to have heard of him.

The media and the players all told us how beloved Ben was by everyone and the trivia question proves it. I mean it would be nice if some of the players ahem Parker Fox would use the kfan pulpit to remind us of what we lost.

Well, he was almost always a supporting actor but he's considered one of the most authentic and venerable cowboy actors of all time. He played some other kinds of roles too like the one he won a supporting actor Oscar for in The Last Picture Show in the early 70s.

No because you can then make a parallel Ben Johnson/Caleb (Kaleb) Williams connection.

So, did you get it right?
