Entering Saturday night's game at Southern California, the Gophers men's basketball team (9-1) was the 10th-best team in the country, based on RPI (rating percentage index) rankings by Rivals.com and CBSSports.com. Top-rated was Duke (8-0), which handed Minnesota its only defeat.

Gophers director of basketball operations Joe Esposito has much to do with Minnesota's RPI. With final approval by coach Tubby Smith, Esposito decides the Gophers' nonconference schedule.

"There's an art to this," Esposito said. "A lot of people call and ask me what the art is, but I'm not giving up the secret. It's like the special sauce at McDonald's."

RPI is a significant factor for the NCAA men's tournament selection committee. So Esposito tries to schedule teams coming off good seasons the previous year.

"That's because your RPI carries into the next year, so if you were 45 last year, you come into next year at 45," he said. "The better teams those teams play, the better their RPI is going to be. So we're looking for teams that are projected to have a good year, teams that could make the NCAA tournament."

Esposito also tries to schedule the best nonconference tournaments for the Gophers.

"This year we hit the jackpot with a real strong RPI tournament (Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas last month); our only loss was the No. 1 RPI team (Duke) in the country," he said.

Esposito began working four years ago on getting Minnesota into the Bahamas tournament.

"I'm already out four years from now for future tournaments," he said.

Next season, Minnesota will play in the Maui Invitational in Hawaii. Teams will include Syracuse and Gonzaga.

Virtually all teams with a 50 RPI or better earn berths in the NCAA tournament.

Gophers victories this season have included American, Toledo, Tennessee State, Richmond, North Florida and South Dakota State. Some are considered cupcake opponents.

Not to Esposito.

"North Florida shouldn't have been a cupcake -- two of their best players didn't play, and I projected them to win their league or be close when I scheduled them," Esposito said. "Hey, they kept it close for a while."

Minnesota won 87-59 at Williams Arena.

"I went out and got Tennessee State because I think they're loaded with talent," Esposito said. "They played in their (conference) championship game last year against Murray State. They had everybody back. I expect them to be (No.) 1 or 2 in the Ohio Valley this season.

"I went after American because I think they're going to have a good year in their league. Toledo is predicted to win their side of their league. I smile now every time Richmond wins because they're going to have a good RPI."

Esposito, 46, who came to Minnesota with Smith six years ago, said there often are bidding wars for opponents.

"I wanted Lehigh bad this year because they beat Duke in the NCAA tournament (last March) and had a strong RPI, but I couldn't get them," he said. "Everybody wanted to get them.

"I don't think we pay anybody more than $90,000 to come in, but these lower-level teams want to get as much money as they can, so they'll give you a crazy number (fee), then tell another school and it ends up in a bidding war. Everyone's looking for a lot of money, and we've got a budget and have to stay within certain limits.

"I'm constantly emailing, constantly calling, and teams are telling me, 'Well, we got this opportunity to play so and so for this amount of money,' and you're like, 'Great, then go and play them. But this is what I can offer.' People are trying to get hotel rooms thrown in, transportation, food. I mean, they're doing anything they can."

Go Gophers!!

Esposito definitely does a better job than most when it comes to non-conference scheduling in regards to not having (m)any RPI killers and getting good low-major teams. I'm not saying I like the schedule, but he's done his homework the last few years and it has shown in the team's RPI coming out of the non-conference schedule.

Isn't the secret sauce thousand island dressing??? ;)

I was comparing the Gopher schedule to the Spartans schedule in another thread, whining about Michigan State having a better game to prepare for the opener. Cayman straightened me out. Now I have to complain about the lack of games between Dec. 11 and Dec. 31, one game in that span. I really wish he (or somebody) would have added a little more sauce during this stretch. Doesn't even have to be the secret stuff, just enough to keep from being rusty. Is school out and not able to schedule?

Go Gophers!!

Is it just me or does Esposito have SS's dream job and perfect fit at that?

Tubby mentioned in his post-game comments that he was concerned about our lack of games between now and the Big Ten opener. He cited a concern about us losing our edge, a bit of conditioning and focus. He said he has some ideas in practice to fill the gap, but it is hard to replicate the game experience. In other words, no special sauce.

Go Gophers!!

How about some special love for the season ticket holders. Playing a couple of non conference home against recognizable schools would be a good way to take care of your loyal customers. It also makes economic sense. Take a look around, Norwood. Williams is the emptiest it's been since pre Musselman in November and December and the team is worth watching.

Look on the bright side. At least the basketball team didn't have to pay off a name team to 'not show up'.

I think Esposito probably consumes too much of that special sauce. Has anyone ever looked and seen how stocky he actually is, he is a big man. I think Limegrover needs to teach Esposito how to knock off some lbs.

Esposito has recently begun a regular workout schedule so I think he's trying to get his weight under control.

When Michigan State scheduled the home and home with Texas, I don't think they expected them to be so bad. They didn't play last year, but the Longhorns beat the Spartans in 2010-11, went 13-3 in the Big 12, made it into the top 5 at one point, and made the tournament. That was the team with Cory Joseph and Tristan Thompson. They also came into this season just outside the top 25 like the Gophers did, in fact I think they were a couple spots higher. I don't think Michigan State scheduled them as a cupcake.

Uhhh, say what? I hope he doesn't really believe that.

He's lost like 40 pounds on his goal to losing 100.

GW, I understood Esposito to say this: "...if you were 45 last year, you come into the FOLLOWING year at 45."

Where else would they start, as Madtown asked.

I am gonna ask tinyarch to comment on this, and straighten us all out. :)

It isn't. Everyone is equal at the beginning of the year. That's why his comments appear bizarre.

So how does Selection Sunday get started on RPI info so early in the season? I don't have a clue. Of course I don't have a clue about lots of things, and the rest of the things I at least have a clue!!!

I think he bases his pre-season strength of schedule stuff off of teams' RPI from the previous season, just because he probably thinks that's the best metric to go off of, not because RPI carries from one year to the next. I am also just making a guess, as I also don't know how RPI works.

Not to be rude, but I saw him mention MCDs, and I was wondering if he was the larger coach on the team?

Not sure why Joe said RPI carries into the following season. That's not true. Every team starts from scratch. Maybe he's thinking of the Sagarin ratings and got the two mixed up, but I would sure think he'd know the difference between RPI and Sagarin.
