per ESPN:
Thompson-Randle El Freshman of the Year
1. Northwestern QB Clayton Thorson (four first-place votes): His passing numbers weren't impressive and he threw several near-interceptions. But he rushed for 68 yards, and his 42-yard TD run proved to be the difference in the upset over Stanford. Thorson didn't have it easy and he'll only get better.
2. Minnesota RB Rodney Smith (one first-place vote): He wasn't tackled once in the backfield by TCU, and his 88 rushing yards were the most by a Gopher in his college debut since Amir Pinnix in 2004. (He also rushed for 88 yards -- against Toledo.) Smith has a bright future.
