In a statement emailed to Minnesota student-athletes on Friday, Kaler wrote: "That certain behavior is simply unacceptable and antithetical to our institutional values. We support Gopher Athletics' decision because this is much bigger than football. It is about the values every University of Minnesota student is called on to uphold. We make these expectations clear, and when they are not met, there are consequences."

Looks like Kaler has drawn a line in the sand. Those 10 suspended players will not be reinstated before the bowl game. Now it is up to the players and whether they want to play or forego the bowl game.

Wow, this football team may be totally different next year. Mass defections, Coaching change, Suspensions, NCAA investigation.

Burn it all to the ground then. Fire Claeys and staff, allow unlimited transfers, and hire a complete choir boy as coach who recruits only the highest caliber character players.
If we are going to lead college football in a new age of values and morality then Kaler and others need to understand the consequences of that in today's major college sports, and when the AD runs in the red 10s of millions per year, and minors sports are cut due to 15,000 attending football games, and the team winning 1-3 games per year on an annual basis he and Coyle can stand and answer for that.
The fact is this administration has taken the football program for granted for a long time, and allowed many in the administration who hate football and want it gone or diminished to effect policy rather than advocate for the coaches and players.
None of this is defending the supposed disgusting acts of those few players, but the overall lack of structure, leadership, or crisis management is disgusting and everyone needs to be burned by this, including the Joel maturi types, the title IX nazis, and now high ground moralists who gladly take the revenue big time college sports bring in when things are under the rug and then claim high and mighty when things go to hell. Burn it all down and let the ashes fall where they may.

Can you take 50 players in a new class? Is there a limit

I hope the Regent's fire his ass.

We're going to hire Caruso.

No real coach would touch this program.

Let's keep in mind a gangbang scenario played out here. That's alarming, especially after the basketball team's similar issues. Kaler should probably be gone but don't let your football self interest cloud your judgement.

No coach worth their salt will touch this dumpster fire. Every top notch high school player in Minnesota is going to choose another place to play football. We are less than Rutgers in football for the next 20 years or more. We might as well call ourselves the Reed College of the midwest. Better learn to bow hunt because that will be your fall fun.

Let St Thomas go D-1 and gift them TCF stadium.

I heard it's changing to baylor north.

He should be reviewed also, not for just this scandal or the basketball scandal, but for his involvement in the Teague situation. Just saying you didn't know about the ethics and behavior under Teagues watch isn't good enough.
His handling of the Mike Ellis and Norwood Teague situations fostered an Athletic department that disrespected the values and core mission of the University of Minnesota and the Safety of students. Claiming ignorance and did not know, is not a defense for a direct report that created an unacceptable culture within the athletic department. Kaler is not above it all like he is pretending. As the Supervisor in charge of the AD, and the Football coach, and recruiting actions of the football department he shares culpability, responsibility and the tarnished image of the University of Minnesota. This stuff happened under his watch. The President of the University is held to a higher standard as is all professional supervisors at the U. If nothing else there should be an overall review of all of it by the board of regents.

Ed "Straight Arrow" Gennaro?

Seriously though, this program is screwed. Remember when people thought 8 wins wasn't good enough? That'll be a distant memory...

So if a hearing for the players is the next step, it would seem that statements like this poison the well?

If this process is over, so be it, but is it? And if it isn't, is it appropriate to comment?

NCAA investigation? Assuming this is a personal take/opinion of yours cuz I have seen nothing indicating as such nor anything that is stating an NCAA investigation is warranted in any way.

Kaler will never abandon his PC culture orientation - it is the ticket to advancement in his field. We've had a lot of UM presidents indifferent or harmful to football, but Kaler could be by far the worst of them all. But the idiot student-athletes that Sept. 2 share the blame.

LOL, the God complex athletes will be no different.

You think it will change, the common denominator is how these elite athletes have been treated their whole life. The new ones will be the same.

Want to get rid have to get rid of major athletics. To think otherwise is not being objective. This behavior is a result of the positions and power that our society gives these children.

Think about it...

Odd position to hold for a poster on a college athletics fan message board.

Did you even read the report? There was a 17 year old recruit that was the first person that had sex with the accuser (although it was deemed consensual with said recruit and the second guy).

And did you read that the Star Tribune has a story on it and an official U of M spokesman has already publicly stated that the U did not, will not, and does not need to report the "recruit" matter in question to the NCAA or Big Ten because the matter does not, and did not, violate any specific NCAA or Big Ten rule/policy. i.e. Yes, a sex act happened, but just because it happened doesn't mean it has anything to do with NCAA/Big Ten rules/policy specific to recruiting and/or institutional control matters.

You can get rid of athletics...then the UofM will be just another Metropolitan State commuter school that nobody's heard of. Be careful what you wish for.

understand there are a lot of non-Minnesota fan trolls posting on here right now. any idiots lobbying for that course of action are 1.) not even U of M fans 2.) 99.9% trolls just trying to get a rise out of people

So are you saying that a recruit, on a visit, can have sex and be involved in crime investigation, and the NCAA won't care? Well, whew... glad that's the case then. Even better!
