per ESPN:

Nick Saban may earn in the area of $7 million per year, but that doesn't stop the Alabama faithful from helping out their championship-winning coach whenever and however they can.

According to a report from AL.com, the Crimson Tide Foundation paid off Saban's $3.1 million home in January 2013 even though the organization was under no obligation to do so.

The Sabans, who bought the 8,759-square-foot home in 2007, continue living there with the foundation picking up the tab for property taxes each year.

Go Gophers!!

The sad part about all of this is that these people probably looked around at each other with big smiles thinking they did a good thing.

Rich get richer.

Does Saban not deserve it? He may go down as the best coach of all time.

"No, as a public figure he's obligated to turn down all gifts and donate all of his expendable income to people of need. It's his moral obligation to do this."

Quite the leap there.

My post wasn't an indictment if Saban. Rather, it's on the absurdity of college athletics and those involved that people would pool 3 million dollars to pay off the house of a man who makes $7 million all in the name of footbaw.

Agreed it is absurd.

Saban sold the home to the foundation for $3.1 million and he will continue living there. They didn't give him $3.1 million to pay off the house in his name. It's not his asset anymore.

Seems like a good idea to keep him around while Texas comes after him with $100 million dollar contracts.

Providing coaches with houses in very common place... this may be the extreme example but its Alabama, so extreme is a relative term.

FYI - of course Bleed was hours faster than I, as my last post was merged!

As absurd as this sounds, you know we'd love it if had boosters with those deep pockets and we were turning out national champions. We'd do anything to keep that coach. And having that house is not a bad idea, a nice selling point should he ever leave/retire and they need to recruit a new home. A 3.1 mil home would be a pretty nice bonus.

I don't think we would ever be able to do something like that here. Even if the University was on board with it, the backlash and overreaction would be incredible from the government offices all the way down to the U of M students. I can only imagine a Mark Dayton statement about such a thing.

Saban is a hero in Alabama, and I don't think any coach in Minneapolis can achieve hero status. Gopher fans would bow down to anyone who brought us a National title, but I don't think the whole state would act the same way. Although maybe Pitino can prove me wrong. :) We could probably afford his modest $1 million Edina home!

Edina has $3 million dollar houses. Richard wins the national title he'll be movin' on up.

Saban has 4 with the LSU national Championship.

John, there is very little you could say to prove that Carroll is a better coach.

Carroll won 2 national championships after coaching 116 games.

Saban has won 4 while coaching 231 games.

Carroll just won the Super Bowl. Saban flamed out in the NFL.

Saban worked his way up thru college football and thus didn't go blue blood from the get go. Carroll came thru the NFL ranks and was then given the blue blood program.

Saban flames out once in the NFL. So did Carroll.
