The Cleveland Indians plan to drop the nickname they have used for more than a century, becoming the latest professional sports franchise to shed its Native American imagery amid accusations that its use is racist, two sources familiar with the decision confirmed to ESPN.

The organization is expected to announce the change this week, sources said, continuing a years-long process in which it abandoned its Chief Wahoo logo and committed to exploring a new nickname, as well.

The New York Times first reported the decision.

Cleveland has not settled on a new nickname, and it's unclear whether the team will be dropping the nickname immediately or will transition to a new moniker following the 2021 season.

Cleveland had a team in the old National League called the Spiders. The franchise folded in 1899.

when Cleveland later became an American League team, they were originally called the Blues and for a short time, the Naps or Napoleons - after star player Nap Lajoie.

they became the Indians for good around 1915 or so.

The Spiders is a great name for any sports team.
 

Spiders would be good, though I think they should go the same route as Colorado (Rockies) did by adopting a failed NHL franchise's nickname, the Cleveland Barons.
 

Cleveland Rocks seems the obvious choice.

Or maybe the Cleveland River Fires.
 




Make it the Cleveland 48's. That's the last time they won a World's Series, 1948. When they beat, no kidding, the Boston Braves.
 

Whenever someone mentions Cleveland, I think of Jack's line in 30 Rock. "Sure, we'd all like to flee to the Cleve."
 



A new name sounds like it's in the works already:

CLEVELAND, OH—Due to mounting pressure from a growing consensus of 12 people on Twitter and The New York Times, the Cleveland Indians have finally chosen to change their team's name and get rid of the highly offensive "Chief Wahoo" mascot. After testing several new names with focus groups, the owners finally settled on the highly non-offensive title "Cleveland Genderless Sports Players With No Discernable Racial Features Or Specific Ethnic Background."

"After listening to the earnest pleas of a few recent college grads who sat through a Native American History course once, we realized something had to change," said owner Paul Dolan. "Once we make this change, we expect the lives of indigenous people to improve exponentially."

In addition to the name change, the Cleveland Indians will also replace Chief Wahoo with a generic, genderless, racially ambiguous grey face with purple hair.

Activists are continuing to push the organization to do more to right the wrongs brought about by decades of racial insensitivity. In response, the team will offer free season tickets to anyone named "Wahoo."
