ESPN: Claeys wants a contract extension, and it's getting harder and harder to say no

Part of me wonders whether Coyle had "his" guy in mind (and under discussions) and that this teams' 8 wins are throwing a monkey wrench into Coyle's plans.

no dude ive watched all the games man but my dad always said 'its not what you say its how you say it' and i just read your diatribes like a middle aged crusty white dude who is sexually frustrated that's all

Why did it have to be a white dude? I take offense to that. I need a safe space!! LOL

Forums are not safezones where one's opinions are void from debate or ridicule. If you desire to be free from the peanut gallery, don't post in a forum. Make a blog and turn off the comments.

Oh yeah, people can say what they want. Doesn't matter to me, I can troll just as hard as everyone else.

You have posted something like six times in this thread already and you are suggesting others should move on. Mmmkay. It is hard to "move on" from your opinion when you continue to double down on it AND let's face it: your opinion is a bit wacky.

See, you don't even know the context of my "move on" and yet you unzipped your pants and threw out your hero card too. My "move on" was not towards people trolling in here, my "move on" was advice in general towards opinions that you don't like. I posted about my opinion on Claeys, and was personally attacked. Obviously, you people have a right to attack, but hey, I can certainly defend/troll too. What's good about opinions is that they are mine, and so your opinion about my opinion means nothing. It's when people start throwing mothers and sisters and personal things around that turns me into a troll.

lol, closet racism is alive and well. Dunno how race crept into his comment, but that's the problem right there. Double standards and closet racists.

(not) sorry if you got uncomfortable with me hitting so close to home playboy - the funny part is im not wrong. now go troll somewhere else you are clearly unstable

I would say an extension and a raise has been earned, what I am not comfortable with is a big buyout like Pitino was given.

I have wondered this same thing and if he was going down this path, one wonders what happens now. Even if we lose to Wisconsin, I think it is going to be real hard not to extend Clayes after an 8-4 season. We r one average passing QB away from being 11-0 right now. The QB issues can't be saddled on Clayes. Last time I checked Clayes wasn't responsible for recruiting offensive players under Kill. Leidner has given us 100% and I appreciate his efforts. He gave us all he has and what else could we as Gopher fans ask for? Clayes recognized from the first day as head coach that the offense was an issue, therefore changes were made. That includes the QB position which is why Green was brought in. I think Clayes has done enough to keep his job and get the extension. A minimal extension at minimal dollars however could indicate that Coyle was acting as we suspect. If he isn't 100% sold on Clayes I think the contract will be low balled and easy to buy out.

What's funny is that most of you have been complaining about the Gophers also, but the moment someone shares an opinion, everyone tries to pull their panties down to declare their body parts are bigger. Don't like my opinion? Move on. Is this not a forum where we can voice our opinion about our favorite team? I guess for you guys, it's a forum where you can argue and troll others because their opinions don't coincide with yours? And some of you just like to troll because some how it makes you feel like you're some hero.

People here have been debating the extension issue for weeks. The problem is your initial rant was based on the false premise that Claeys is "begging" for an extension. You wrote "beg/begging" twice in the same post. There's no evidence of that anywhere.

If Coyle has a guy in mind, and he isn't 100% sold on Clayes, he'll be gone if he loses to Wisconsin. Coyle has been around programs that win. Whether it was Chris Peterson and Boise St on the football side, or Kentucky/Syracuse on the basketball side. He's not going to hitch his wagon to someone he doesn't believe in if he thinks he can get someone better.

Rolgnav doesn't understand that people don't think he's a knucklehead because he doesn't like Claeys. They think he's a knucklehead because he falsely accuses our coach of pathetically begging for an extension.

My 2¢ - Claeys set the bar high when he said we should expect 8-10 wins this year, and though he has achieved the low end of that projection, it hasn't been done impressively. A win against Wisconsin will certainly merit an extension, but a loss will probably get him dismissed. Naturally, sincere Gopher fans will be cheering for him to earn both the win and the extension.

Coyle has to balance and gauge many areas. Ticket sales, facilities are still a year off, recruiting, culture, etc. etc.

I think Coyle can buy another 1-2 years and get a much better picture.

I've put on my Maroon and Gold colored glasses at this point.

1. Tickets are down, but the home schedule was bad and average is still in line with 20 years of Gopher Football. Going 0-2 to start Conference hurt.
2. Facilities are still a year off and evolving.
3. Recruiting is down, but may have more to do with Kill leaving and available talent in MN this year. Claeys should get shot at second class.
4. Culture seems to be really strong in the locker room. There were guys missing due to on and off field suspensions, but team really seems to be together. Those things can spiral and fracture weak teams.
5. New OC came in and adapted to the talent in the locker room. Many would blow things up, but Claey's leadership has helped the offense contribute to an 8-3 season so far.
6. Again new OL coach. We have three first year players start on the OL and we came together to help produce an 8-3 team and average the most points in years. We return all but one player next year.
7. Basically played without a legit TE all year.
8. Put freshmen in places to success and help the team
9. Preserved QB red-shirts to help the future of the program. Not sure Kill would have been patient enough to do so.
10. Adapting and evolving defense based on talent and recruiting strengths.

With a defense first team, we should be able to sustain at this level and even better if recruiting bar is raised.

With all the changes and questions around Kill's health, it's pretty remarkable that this team has now won 8 games in 3 of the last 4, 12 game seasons.

Why are we even discussing if Tracy will be our coach next year?

Why are we even discussing if Tracy will be our coach next year?

This. We just had our 3rd 8 win season in 4 years and we are 2 plays from being 10-1 right now. He should be guaranteed to get an extension and be the coach.

This begging is pretty sad. This was supposed to be the year. 5th year Senior QB, the "best team" he has ever had. New and improved Offense. His style, his way, his team. They controlled their own destiny, and failed. In my opinion, the team has underperformed. He can beg for an extension after he beats Wisconsin.

Nonsense post. He was asked and said yes, he wants an extension, that's not begging. What was he supposed to say...?

How did we "fail?" Going into the season, we beat every one were suppose to and lost to everyone were suppose to. Game by game, we beat everybody we were favored against and went 2-2 against teams we were underdogs against.

Exactly. Poster is clueless and being a tool. Not to be taken seriously.

There are a couple of issues floating just below the surface of this thread.

Yes, Gophers have won 8 games - normally a good season for Gopher FB. BUT, some people feel the team underachieved based on the perceived easier schedule, and Claeys' claim that this was the "most talented" team in the Kill/Claeys era. There are also people who feel the team has failed the "eye test" by seeming to struggle against perceived lesser opponents.

On the other hand, some people say an 8-win season is good enough, in and of itself, to warrant an extension.

And, there are people who think, or suspect, that the new AD may want to put his own stamp on the program by making a change at head coach.

So, it's fair to say there is a difference of opinion on this issues. And, unless someone here has inside information, no one's opinion is more valid or "better" than anyone else's opinion. So, if you make a bold statement, prepared to be challenged.

As far as I'm concerned, I think Claeys is back and gets some kind of an extension - unless something blows up between now and the end of the season.

I doubt he doesn't get an extension at this point. If I'm Coyle I give him the extension with a reasonable buy out, just in case next season is an absolute disaster. If we get blown out in Madison this week, I rescind this post. Then he may not get the extension.

Wonder if even after Coyle says yes or no to the extension, the speculation ends. Heavy odds on it not ending though...

Many people on the board have been suggesting he get a "low" or "reasonable" buyout or a one- or two-year extension. If he does, the speculation will begin again early next season. This would indicate pretty clearly that the AD still isn't sold on him.

So in true Minnesota fashion, we'll extend him through 2024 and then fire him next year.

Right, which is why that won't happen. If he gets an extension, it will be to solidify his future for the next several years.

Yes, that's been my expectation from the start: Coyle needs to make a decision to either commit to Claeys or let him go. Giving him two more years with a low buyout because he's unsure is unlikely.

...And if he doesn't get an extension...what's he going to do?

Two games left...big games...win them both and then get extended.

If Claeys is fired, it better not be due to lack ticket sales or 'enthusiasm.' This team is coming off a 5 win season that is not his fault, has the most boring home schedule in years and is competing with an NFL team entering a brand new stadium with Super Bowl aspirations. Nothing short of Nick Saban himself would have had every game sold out this year.

The Bowl game needs to be irrelevant to this discussion. If we are coach shopping in January because we lost the Insight Bowl again, we have the wrong AD. The only way Clayes should not be back is if Coyle completely does not see eye to eye with him, or has some HR hire lined up.

Alright- 1 big game- he needs to win.

I'm not sure requiring someone to win a road game at the #5 ranked team in the country or be fired is a reasonable demand....

I'm also not sure winning 8 games against this schedule is reason enough to extend. Your most impressive win of the season is against a team that already lost to Illinois State and Western Michigan.
