per ESPN:
Ferentz, Fitzgerald and Dantonio are the only Big Ten coaches who held their current positions in 2007. Back then, the league's coaching ranks included mainstays like Penn State's Joe Paterno, Michigan's Lloyd Carr, Purdue's Joe Tiller and Ohio State's Jim Tressel. The Big Ten was the national model of coaching longevity. Even programs that had recently made changes, like Wisconsin and Minnesota, were replacing coaches who had been at those schools for 10 years or longer. Fitzgerald had become Northwestern's coach in 2006 after the sudden death of Randy Walker, who had been in his post since 1999 and had received a contract extension through 2011.
In less than a decade, the Big Ten has gone from historic stability to historic volatility in its coaching ranks, which reflects a seismic national landscape. There have been 15 coaching changes in the conference since the start of the 2010 season, the most fluctuating stretch since the 1940s.
Four programs have made multiple changes, including traditional powers Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State. Three coaching changes took place during the season, most recently at Maryland, which fired Randy Edsall on Sunday after a 2-4 start.
"There's not a lot of patience," Dantonio said. "People are asked to win and to win now, and you're basically judged on winning. That's what's happening out there."
