Entire football team reportedly plans to enter portal to follow HC

Not sure how that could work with Southern Mis. They have to have a number of players than Marshall. HC would be unlikely to take the team wholesale over with him.

HC can cut players during his first year with a new team.

Some clickbait with the "Entire" team stuff but won't be surprising at all if a bunch of key players from Marshall with eligibility left follow their coach to Southern Miss. That will probably be a very common occurrence during coaching changes in this current day and age.

Remember the days when kids said "I committed to the school, not the coach."?

No question if he could but I doubt he would.

Which will mean a lot of Marshall kids are going to learn quickly how much more they like their coach then he likes them, when there isn't a spot for them.

The whole situation is weird with the coach making what's basically a lateral move to Southern Miss after the stint at Marshall. Same conference, too.

Yeah, hopefully the kids and their parents are smart and make a good decision on that. As almost for sure there are going to several of them they wouldn't have a spot for.

Not sure how true this is, but it is ridiculous if it happens. Sucks for the kids that will get booted from Southern Miss.
While all of those programs lost a substantial amount of talent last year, it might pale in comparison to Marshall this year, which could lose nearly its entire roster to the transfer portal this year after losing head coach Charles Huff to another head-coaching job 24 hours after winning the Sun Belt championship, according to Jerod Smalley of NBC4 Columbus.

“Basically the entire Marshall football team is entering the portal, which sets up an interesting potential move,” Smalley wrote. “Could all those guys follow Huff to Southern Miss (like Curt Cignetti from JMU to Indiana last year) and immediately have a championship team? That'll be wild to watch.”

Go Gophers!!

The Transfer Portal is a risky proposition for many players. There will be more heartbreaks than jubilation for players in both teams involved. According to an article on April 25, 2022 in Sports Illustrated based on a massive amount of data from the 2019-20 and 2020-21 school year:

  • 54% reported enrolling at a new school
  • 41% have not found a new school, are still looking, transferred to a non-NCAA school, or left their sport completely
  • 59% of scholarship transfers found a scholarship at a new FBS school
  • 8% left their scholarships and became walk-ons at a new school
  • 33% of players remain without a destination
  • 18% of walk-ons that transferred found a scholarship at a new school
  • About one-third of FCS transfers land a scholarship at a new school
  • 36% of FCS transfers find a new school to sign with at all
Rowing the boat elsewhere sounds sexy, but players beware - almost half the players will be left adrift without a paddle.
