Another kicker. PWO I assume. The battle for the kickers job will be interesting next year.

Can't wait to hear this in the future from Mike Grimm: "Gophers looking at a 43-yd attempt for the win . . . The snap is back . . . The kick is up, and . . . Carpenter nails it!"

No question this signing will add to building a stronger foundation for the program.

Like having a kicker who is used to kicking in even colder weather than we have. I know we signed a big kid last year. Was he a scholarship kid? He looked more like a lineman than a kicker. How has he been looking?

Don't have any real insight into Santoso other than I seem to recall some reports that made it sound like he was more of an option at Punter than Place Kicker.

I have seen him (Santoso) punt in practice and the height/distance was impressive. I'm not sure of the other details needed in a punter tho. I have never seen him kick a FG - I believe he is a higher probability to punt than to be the kicker.

Santoso will kick one 50 some yards and then shank one for 10 yards. That's why Morrell did the punting. They wouldn't bring in another kicker if they were confident about Santoso.

Back ups are important at every position. Injuries, transfers, academics, etc. Things happen. They may or may not have confidence in Santoso, but bringing in another kicker doesn't mean one or the other. Maybe they need a backup, maybe they have no confidence in their current backup, maybe they are setting up depth in case it is needed. Who knows?

Pretty sure Morrell did the punting because he was (very) good at it. Just because he was better than Santoso doesn't mean Santoso was bad. I assume you watched Morrell this year, no? He was very good.

Morrell was awarded a scholarship. Santoso signed on with one. Pete did a great job. So far Santoso has been a bust. I attended a few practices and the kid was very erratic. Some of his kickoffs were smoked, but then he would turn around and duck hook one out of bounds.

You serious?

A bust? WTF? Dude hasn't even played in a game yet. Since when does a guy become a bust by RS'ing.

Like a few others on this board I suspect that Ruppert's definition of a "bust" is somebody who isn't contributing now. Using that definition all the freshmen who redshirted last fall are also busts. Patience Ruppert patience! Patience brings yo players like David Cobb, Derrik Engel, and Ra'Shede Hageman.

This entire post needs more love.

Don't the kickers go to kicking camps or clinics in the off season? Peter Mortell wanted the job bad as a PWO and worked hard to earn a well deserved schollie.

Some kickers/punters need more time to develop consistency & confidence. I wonder if Ryan Santoso is one of those.

Santoso earned his Under Armour roster spot by doing just this. He beat out the kid that signed with Ga. Tech (Butker) at the Kohl's kicking camp.
He was Florida 6A All-State Kicker.
Whether he's a "bust" at the collegiate level or not remains to be seen.

I personally find it hard to categorize a Nationally ranked kicker, winner of a Kohl's kicking camp competition, and successful competitor in 6A football as being "bust" material.

Carpenter is listed as a scholarship commit by 247 so he may not be a PWO.

Santoso took up a valuable scholarship. A " kicker " who gets a scholarship should be able to come in and kick right away. Copyright: Mike Chalberg from New Zealand and Rheys Lloyd from Rochester Community College.

How do you know the plan wasn't to redshirt him all along?

I dunno. A "coach" with a plan may have thought Santoso was worth a scholarship but also that he had a serviceable to good kicker on campus (Hawthorne) and wanted his kicking game locked up for the next five years.. If Santoso kicks next year, the only scholarship "wasted" was 2013. But by calling it wasted assumes that a freshman kicker could be found that would be better than Santoso.

the dude was an all-american kicker…let him kick the ball once before we drag him over the coals…it wasn't like we needed an awesome kicker/punter this year. Hawthorne did well and Mortell rocked.
