Eliason's Chadron team made the trip to Omaha to play a very good Omaha Skutt team that is a class larger than Chadron and also had a D-1 recruit that plays center. Eliason went up against James Hajek, a 6-9 senior with an offer from Weber State. Chadron is #1 in C-1 and Skutt is #2 in class B. Skutt won 55-42. Hajek finished with 8 points, 10 rebounds and 1 block and was in foul trouble the whole game. Eliason finished with 13 points on 5-7 shooting. He was 3-4 on freethrows. He also had 6 rebounds, 4 blocks, 3 steals and 1 assist. His coach was disappointed that his teammates did not get him the ball more. Was a decent test for Eliason.

I had read yesterday somewhere that Tubby was there to watch him. Any mention of him attending?

Maybe this kid will prove me wrong, but I hope he is nothing more than our backup center for four years. We need players like that, so I'm not knocking the scholarship offer but I don't think he is starting center material for a team that I expect the Gophers to be in a couple years.

I had to look for a bit to see where I saw that yesterday.

It was a Twitter update from Marcus Fuller-

Maybe he didn't make it?

Tubby Smith watching his big man recruit Elliott Eliason today in a Nebraska tournament.

Have you seen him play? Getting a solid 4-year big man is a different beast than getting some super athletic seventeen-star diaper dandy super amazing rivals approved all star.

I will take a dedicated 3 or 4 star star for a 4-year committment over an undedicated 5 star who is looking at one and done and moving on any day of the year. Good luck, Elliot...and welcome to Minnesota.

Agreed.

Not me. Haven't been a ton of 3 star guys playing in the NC game recently. However I do recall Derrick Rose playing in it and almost beating another team full of 4 and 5 star 2-3 and done guys

Call me crazy - but I like this kid. I haven't seen him play, but would really like to. He just seems like a kid that would fit perfectly in the program, he's unselfish, smart, a team player, he's already willing to redshirt next year, and to get a big for 5 years that's just a sponge to soak up coaching, I think he can be a Jeff Hagen type of player and really make an impact.

Big men are so hard to evaluate in high school, a lot of them have just went through growth spurts and are dealing with their new frame, and they are the guys that start peaking around 21 or 22, not 17. I'm pretty sure Tubby wouldn't of offered some non-athletic big dude, I'm sure he sees a lot of potential.

This article talks about Tubby's attendance at the game:

"With his future coach, Tubby Smith, head mentor at the University of Minnesota, looking on, Eliason made five of seven field goal shots and three of four free throws for 13 points."

Go Gophers!!

I like to see that. :)

I also like to see this from a 6'11" 235 pound commit:

"He managed to earn a 3.58 grade-point average, get a 26 on the ACT and qualify for the National Leadership Conference of Future Business Leaders of America."

Welcome aboard EE

At worst he provides depth in the post. All 13 scholarship players can't get 30 minutes a game, actually if playing time were divided equally each player would get about 15 minutes. Someone in the post is going to only get 5-10 minutes a game and you need a guy to fill that role.

as we have learned...

as we have learned, a scholarship player can bring worse stuff to the team's table than what you mention. I think this kid has a big upside - no pun intended.

I for one am happy to have him. He can get pounded by Colt and RSIII for two years and hopefully grow into an inside force for Big Ten play down the road.

Baloney. The NC game has lots of 3 Star, 4 Star, and 5 Star players every year. Mich St had a mix of them just last year. Memphis (the year before) had the same mixture of Stars - 3, 4, and 5.

FOT, I might be mistaken but I don't believe Memphis was in the championship were they? They didn't win a game that year IIRC.

Indeed they were in NC game. Their record was 38-2 (that didn't change) but the FF appearance was erased from record book.

Yikes! That photo of Elliason makes him look sickly thin! But I guess I heard he was red-shirting anyway. Rah, rah Gophers!

Ya, you did, BGF, but it is still fun to rag on ya. :)
