Leaving before his senior year with one year of eligibility left. This ALWAYS works out well for a kid who does this, right?

I dont know what he has to gain by leaving early...its not like his NFL stock is high...can somebody fill me in? Is he going to enter the draft or to another school?

My understanding is that he had academic problems. I am not sure it was his choice.

It was only his choice in that he chose not to cut it academically.

Kill mentioned something about him being an academic casualty. If that is the case, I just don't have any sympathy for him. With all of the academic help given to players, mandatory study halls, and the light course load during the season, there is no excuse for not staying eligible. It is not that difficult. Anyone who fails out is not trying.

Perhaps he let things slide fully expecting to go to the nfl. Realistic or not, he probably had people in his ear saying go for it.

Makes sense

Jewhan did not show up to ANY of his final exams for the fall semester! They still tried to save him and got him an appeal with the school....which he also did NOT show up for.

This was the final straw with Coach Kill

He still never filed for the NFL, so he only has the choice to try and get into some lower level school at this point.

All he did was post facebook statuses of being drunk as can be, even on days of away games when they would get back to Minnesota late in the day. Addition by subtraction

Coach Kill talks about wanting football players that are athletic, fast and intelligent. I don't see young Mr. Edwards falling into any of those categories. Add in his off the field creativity and I am in full agreement that this is addition by subtraction. I'm actually surprised that the new staff made that much of an effort to "save" him. If Edwards didn't respond positively to their efforts, it is not surprising that the coaching staff has agreed to move on.

Sounds more like he just quit the team to me. I wish him well in all his future endeavors; was a gentleman anytime spoken to from my experience. TOO BAD, I wanted him to get his degree from The U; he contributed to the program for three years on the field in a big way.

BUT, as they say, NEXT MAN UP! SOMEBODY OR BODIES HAVE BEEN PRESENTED WITH AN OPPORTUNITY!

Yes but

we have another Edwards---at running back---who i think could be the surprise of the class.

If all this is true, it is pathetic. On one hand, you hate to see the decisions a kid makes when he is 21 years old or so ruin the rest of his life. On the other hand, if someone is this irresponsible then he has made his bed. Time to lie in it. I don't think I'm alone in saying that I would not hire him for any job.

Maybe as a Taste Tester for the Schlitz Brewing Company?

You'd think he'd have learned something from his dealings with WLA.

Anyone who had him as a friend on facebook knew this was coming. All he ever talked about was throwing parties at the club, drinking, smokin weed, fckin hoes, beating up Walker Lee Ashley. Who needs a degree when you have all that. ;)

The only reason I care is that DT isn't exactly deep. Move Jacobs inside? Try a little 3-4?

Yeah, it'll be interesting to see what they do with Jacobs. I know that he isn't a perfect type of DE (seems to make more sense at DT), but he was our best DE last season. I think a lot of it will depend on how far along Hageman and Tauaefa come along.

DT is not a position where we have a lot of experienced depth, but we have recruited the position pretty hard in previous classes, so we do have a plethora of underclassmen, and one of them will have to step up. Like I said, we have Hageman and Tauaefa who will be fighting for that starting position, but we also have three other RS FR DT's who will be fighting for PT (Legania, Botticelli, Ferguson) and we have Hahn who played quite a bit last season.

I can't imagine we will be seeing much 3-4 next season.

I'm sorry, I just don't see this as that big of a loss... Yes he was Big, Pat Williams type of player but he wasn't that good. Decent the LAST two games of the year, but he was a slack. We have guys with more drive and will that could fill in and do AS GOOD a job if not better. He's leaving? I just don't care...

I don't think it's that big of a loss because he had a terrible attitude, but I think he was unquestionably one of our 2 best defensive players last season. Despite being a Pat Williams type (and I agree with you on that), he was our best pass rusher. This isn't to say he was a great pass rusher, but for a space eater type of DT, he got a good push on pass plays (led the team in sacks). He made plays last year (5th in the Big 10 in TFL).

With his attitude, I do still say "good riddance" however Edwards would have been one of our better defensive players next season and would be one of the better returning defensive lineman in the Big 10.

He could be a candidate for a supplemental draft with the NFL. Not sure about that, but I believe that academic casualties who didn't file for the regular draft can be thrown into a supplemental draft held a month or so after the regular draft. Again, I'm not exactly sure how that works, but that's how Cris Carter got into the NFL. And, of course, there's no guarantee anyone would draft Edwards.

You are correct on why a player might enter the supplemental draft.

In the supplemental draft, teams place a bid on where they would want to draft a player. The team with the highest bid (closest to first round) "wins" and drafts the player. That team then forfeits their equivalent pick in the next year's draft. Teams do not have to enter a bid if they do not want the player.

Assuming that Edwards enters the supplemental draft, a team (let's say the Vikings) could bet that he would be better than the guy they would otherwise get in the 7th round of the 2012 draft. If nobody wants to risk a 6th round pick or higher on him, then the Vikings would get Edwards and would not have a 7th round pick in 2012.

It all rests on whether you think Edwards, with all of his off-the-field red flags and moderate on-the-field production, is worth the risk/investment.

I try not to criticize college athletes but since this comment isn't related to talent here goes: this guy was the epitome of lazy. Watching the games in person you get a chance to focus on things away from whatever's on the tv camera and I couldn't stand the way this guy loafed. He had talent and it showed when he gave effort but more often then not he would give up 1 or 2 seconds into a play and then stand/walk/slowly jog around the field.

Good riddance.

I completely agree. His attitude was so bad that I still say "good riddance", I was only pointing out the fact that he was a pretty productive (one of the few) defensive players on our team. I really do think that it will hurt us short term, but long term...a guy like that is terrible for a program.
