Duluth East's Akolda Manyang accused of smoking cigarettes on street, may miss State

This kid will never play for the U, just cross him off the list. Grades, discipline, family influences, transferring around, I just don't even see it happening. I wish him the best of luck though.

Quick to judge? I don't remember reading many bad things about his discipline, grades, etc.

You may be aware that Zach Stahl of Hopkins was booted off the team for the state tournament. Any scuttle on that?

Must be the new "thing." Want to get an easier victory? Simple, call the schools principal and tell them you saw one of their best players smoking a cigarette. Problem solved.

First, he isn't even enrolled completely at East. He is at Woodland Hills which is one step above a full juvenile home or jail is a next step too. You go to this school if you have serious issues. This is because of what happened at Century. He was seen smoking by an employee there. Also, this is not a court proceeding. They do not have to produce all this information his foster mom says they have to. In addition, he did miss a game this year due to disciplinary issues with a teacher at East. Sorry, but you just can't skip past the fact he was thrown out of Century for severe issues.

What does a place like Woodland Hills have to gain by doing this? Look at the track record of the place. I know several people that work there and they are quality people. I also know several kids whose lives were changed by their program. Part of therapy and rehabilitation is to be "pushed". Will Starks doesn't work there. He doesn't have a degree in that field. Who is he to judge what they do? Would he want to adopt or fight for a 5'5 kid? Please don't tell me he is worried about his civil rights! This is about basketball.

That last part is a bit unfair if you ask me. In regards to the other stuff, I don't know Manyang's whole life story. All I know is the article made it seem like a pretty ridiculous situation.

I am from the Duluth area and I have tried to keep an open mind about Will Starks. I am not a "sore loser", but some of the kids that have ended up at East from other Duluth schools and Superior WI is just too questionable. However, if he wants to say some pretty insightful comments about a place that works to help kids, then he needs to be prepared to defend himself for what could seem like "shady" motives with Akolda and all that happens at East. There has been rumblings and issues with the East program for years now and this is just the high point of it all.

I am just not sure if my comments are any more unfair than him attacking Woodland Hills and saying they are out to get kids.

I have seen kids suspended at the school in which I work based off of someone (teacher/coach) seeing them smoking and they are turned in. As a matter of fact, happened just this week. Of course, the kid admitted to it.

Sounds like Duluth East had a good first half, but then they got smoked by Osseo in the second. 62-51 final.
