DT Sean Ferguson

that combine was tenth grade remember, three years ago. his shot put is 47'6 which isn't great for his size, but pretty damn good for high school. I'd guess he's a little short on burst. That's why we pay the big bucks to a S&C guy.

Big kid,
I'll chime in with my knowledge of the throwing field events, I couldn't actually find the shotput distance in those articles. I'm a coach of the throws in a MN HS, 47'6' is not great, unless that was from his soph year. At his size, it's probably a speed thing, and I've found that although the throws events are great at making a good football lineman better, it doesn't always translate, especially at that size. It's a good sign that he's a thrower though, it will help his feet regardless of the distance he throws. Diamond in the rough? He's got an amazing frame.

Welcome Sean. Glad to have you join the Gopher program and look forward to seeing you mature as a Gopher student athlete.

The Hun School is where the (in)famous Myron Rolle went before attending Florida State and later Oxford.

We all know size isn't everything, but in this case it could make it all the more interesting to watch this kid develop. Pretty cool that his high school pedigree indicates that his brain has grown in proportion to the rest of his body. Maybe he can help bring the team GPA up a couple of points.

Thanks, Ole. We lived in Dallas in the late 70's. My daughter was a frosh at Thomas Jefferson High School. She said the rumor in school was that some kid was gong to set a new record in the shot put so I went to their track meet that Saturday. Michael Carter put it about 73 feet his first attempt that morning. As I recall the old record was in the 50 to 60 foot range. He went on later that meet to get about 77 feet and later that summer he put it, I think, a little over 81 feet. His record may still stand.

When it happened the judges and the crowd were absolutely dumbfounded. It was a lead story on each of the sports casts that evening. If you are curious, he's the same Michael Carter that played for SMU and was All Pro nose tackle for the 49ers. He showed up at SMU driving a new Lincoln and along with Eric Dickerson's Trans Am and others were some of the reasons SMU was given the death penalty a few years later.

Look at the calf muscles. That tells you everything you need to know about frame. Wish I had calves like that.

No doubt he will be intriguing to follow. But so will Jonathan Ragoo. Those two, along with Gjere, have some size that really cannot be taught.

Hope all goes well with coaching them up and having the weight room be their dormatory.

Not to highjack young Mr. Ferguson's thread, but that's really cool you saw Carter throw in HS. He's legendary, there are stories of him throwing wall to wall in a basketball gym in practice, at 81', I don't doubt he hit 90' in HS practice, maybe more if he was fouling out.
I have been able to see alot of big time track and field athletes in my young coaching career, including a few current gopher footballers. Trey Davis, Ryan Orton, Sam Maresh, and Ryan Wynn all were HS throwers, I even have seen young Mr. Henderson throw as a freshman.
Field events are great for developing strength and explosion, on a track team, often the best athlete is an elite level thrower, sprinter's speed, jumper's explosion, and obvious strength.

He has Anthony Montgomery size, now if he has a better work ethic we will be in good shape. Anthony Montgomery admitted he did not try at the college level.

That info you posted has him being a legit 6'5" 350 lbs in HS. I am a little concerned that he isn't incredibly strong (he was by far the largest man on that list, but nowhere near the strongest).

It's all about arm length. There is a reason Guards often bench much more than tackles. If he has good footwork and technique he will be just fine.

He looks like a discus thrower to me. Most successful shot put guys are I've seen are wider. He has the length to throw the discus if he got his footwork down, he'd be able to throw it quite far.

Good point, although I would hope he can throw a shot also, if his discus distances were more impressive that would be a good sign indeed. All of this assumes he has had quality coaching, which can make a difference, Example would be Joe Schaffer, the last Cretin kid to go to wisky, he was a beast but had poor coaching and was beaten by many smaller and weaker kids in the shotput.
Apologies for my shot/disc fan coming out, for those that just want to talk about the newest Golden Gopher. I would think it can be interesting though, a correlation to another sport, especially a strength/footwork sport like throwing.

That's a super elite high school.

Sometimes you decide between two kids based upon who is definitely not an academic risk.

+1

The school's average SAT score (verbal and math only) in 2008 was 1201. Plus, members of the effing Saudi royal family attended there. That's enough for me to know the kid's got some brains.

Good for him and good for Brew in picking this kid up.

I'm learning something here, never knew about this school. That's truly impressive, and I'm glad he's a Gopher.

I have a feeling this school has great track coaching. If one of us remembers we should try and get some results this spring.

the post really had nothing to do with race even though you "tried" to make it about race. it was merely a factual observation of the big ten and the offensive linemen in the conference.......there are a lot of fat, white offensive linemen. it also had nothing to do with minnesota vs. iowa vs. wisconsin vs. michigan. not sure where you are going with that angle either. chill out......

His rivals profile says dec. grad so I assume he could possibly be here early which would be a huge plus.

Also, am I right in saying prep school kids still have the normal 4+ years that a high school kid has?

A December grad, January enrollment would be awesome.
