Dorsey Commits to Gophers!!!!!!!!!

I Think You might Have It Backwards

Kevin Dorsey appears to have a ton of potential especially in the full-court pressing Pitino system. How concerned we should be about these small athletic guards holding up through a physically grueling conference schedule is the thing on my mind. Adding Jarvis would give us three rather diminutive albeit very athletic backcourt players who will be going up against substantially bigger more physical guards from any other team in the B1G. I'm not sure Pitino is striking the right balance between athleticism and physicality in the guards he wants. Hopefully, Nate, Kevin, and likely Jarvis prove to be durable players.

The problem is one for the opponents. Napier and Boatright just won the National title. Siva and Smith won it the year before.
Mathieu proved what a quick penetrating guard can do to demoralize opponents. He needed a partner. Andre was gimpy.

Physicality in guards can be an attribute if the refs let them mug people. If you can control tempo they are at a disadvantage.

As somebody else stated, relentless defensive quickness is also a problem for bulkier guards in getting the ball up the floor, initiating their offense, timing and certainly penetration.

History says we will be Golden if the guards are quick, relentless and talented.

I'm not sure if it has been determined at this time if we will be going small-small. I would pencil in Dorsey and Lofton at the 1 and 2, and I think their primary targets at the 3, have some size. I'm a big fan of Jarvis, but would be surprised if he signs. IMO besides Alex I., the main target should be a SF who can step in and play on day one.

Over SR Carlos Morris....

You're consistent at least.

^ This. Last 2 national champs have featured a pair of small but quick combo guards. Also, best Gopher backcourt in my lifetime was 6'0 Bobby Jackson and 6'1" Eric Harris.

With eight top 100 players, you'd think they'd be better than 9-7 in EYBL play. All of those teams are loaded, but not to that extent.

AAU ball is a joke in terms of 'teams'. It's entire purpose was for kids to get more recruiting exposure so team results mean nothing

Still pretty jacked about this commit. Can't wait to see who is next.

Dorsey is a very nice commit for us. My only concern is it sounds like he's not a very good 3-point shooter? Am I right in assuming this is true of Mason as well? Who are we targeting that is a lights out shooter?

Mason is a good shooter.

He is a better shooter then guys like Jarvis and Carlos Morris. He did shoot 52% from the field, 33% on 3's and 73% on FTs.

Burned into Dorsey’s mind following the three-day camp was the sight of Minnesota Coach Richard Pitino sitting in the front row at every one of his games, making known his desire to land the talented rising senior point guard. On Saturday morning, Dorsey reciprocated the love by committing to Minnesota’s basketball team.

“The fact that he was at every one of my games, front and center, showed me how much he wanted me and that meant a lot,” Dorsey said. “The coaching staff told me before they needed me and wanted me to come right in and play, so hopefully that’s what I can do.”

“Minnesota’s style of play is how I like to play. I know it’s cold up there, but if you give me a nice coat to stay warm, I’ll be fine.”

I like the coat comment.

Just watching that video now. Reminds me of lil Dre these ways:
- His ability to get a shot up in traffic
- His ability to protect and hide the ball when finishing
- His decisiveness passing the ball

Deceptive speed like Mason, too.

We can always remind him that it't not as cold as last winter. We won't have another one like it for 50 years. "This is nothing compared to the winter of '14. -10 is balmy!"

He needs to be wary of all the Polar Bears with knifes walking around though! They're always out in full force during the winter months.

LOL! Well played! Never gets old!

That Louisville team had a big shot blocker, so did last year's UConn team. Having that lanky/athletic interior presence to thwart the other quick guards, in addition to having their own quick/athletic guards, proved to be a championship combo.

Pitino looks to be building a similar model with Konate and Diedhiou on the inside, guards like Dorsey and (hopefully) Johnson on the perimeter. Maybe? Is that a fair assumption?

(Sitting somewhere last year, I caught portions of the AAC tournament and UConn looked dangerous. Their tall interior guy turned EVERYTHING away, and after doing that a few times, teams became limited to jump shots and attempts to get out on the break against a very quick Husky squad. I thought to myself - they look good. I picked them to be elite 8 material, didn't think they could make the run they did.)

Anyone else read into this that he'd be a Day 1 starter?

With Dre and Dre graduating, a lot of minutes will be opening up.

2015-16
Dorsey / Mason
Lofton / ???
Morris / McNeil
Martin / King / Buggs
Konate / Diedhiou

Probably need one or two more wings in this class, not only for 15-16 but looking ahead to 16-17 after Morris graduates. Maybe another big man, too.

The point guards

Although Dorsey's pick of Minnesota at the time seemed like an upset, based on conversations with sources close to the Paul VI (Va.) guard, he felt it was apparent that he wasn't Maryland's top choice, and Turgeon didn't press for a commitment. In retrospect, it's clear that Maryland favors St. James' (Va.) Justin Robinson, who has high interest but isn't ready to commit yet.

This sounds like a Minnesota-esque "since he went somewhere else, we didn't really want him" comment. He's a ood player and I can't imagine they would not have wanted him.

If Morris and McNeil remain the top options at the 3 for 2015/16, then something has gone very wrong with this recruiting class. I expect Coach P. and staff to sign two wings and/or move Lofton to the 3 if push comes to shove.

Carlos Morris will start the first game of the Big 10 schedule at the wing position in 2015 and you will post a picture with a bib around your neck eating some freshly roasted crow, fork and knife vertical with a big smile on your face. I will be standing behind you with a big sh1t a$s grin taking a piss on golden showers wife.

And it will have nothing to do with a poor recruiting class.

That's why I said we probably need to add another wing or two.
