Tubby has plenty of faults.. but he has plenty of strengths. Its obviously, like GopherPlaya, lots of folks on this board hate him.. at the end of the day, I would love to have a coach that wins the BT and makes the NCAA tourney on a regular basis. So far, Tubby has not done much in the BT. However, his NCAA track record is pretty much ahead of any other former Gopher coach (3 appearances and now, perhaps a run). If we beat Florida, I guess I want to ask folks what it is that they want. Tourney success or BT success. Obviously both would be great, but right now, Michigan St, Indy and Ohio St have the only programs in the BT with a track record of that. Wisky is close behind, but typically only make one round, less this year. I agree, that recruiting is worrisome of late, but part of that is due to the two year dry spell, Clem had the same ups and downs. I think we beat Florida, that is going to greatly help recruiting for the big class.
At the end of the day, I want tourney success, that is all that matters. Tubby has as good a track record at that than anyone we have had at coach..which is pretty eye opening about Minnesota's futility at hoops..even though folks like to somehow paint the Clem years like we were Duke or something.
If Teague makes a move, I am behind him 100%, but I certainly would not have a problem with Tubby if he returns next year. I realize I am in the minority but I base my opinion on how much fun I have had as a gopher fan over the past 15 years. I have received far more enjoyment with Tubby at the helm than I have in any Gopher year, excluding the final four run. Is there room for improvement. YES. I think we should be in the tourney every year. But I wouldn't pay premium money and travel to watch the team (which I do quite a bit) if I didn't enjoy the team. Now, I realize lots of folks would rather go through life with a bowl of pissed on cheerios, but not me.
Now, I also see room for improvement. More consistent recruiting. Choosing players who fit your tough love style, etc. If Teague has an exit/season ending interviews with every player and they all piss and moan about Tubby, then sure, lets move on.. as there is no point. If we would have crapped our pants against UCLA, I would have changed my tune. No, one game does not decide everything, but making a run is important and Tubby is past due for one. I would agree that middle of the pack BT results and zero tourney runs are cause for getting rid of him.
I guess my torch and pitchfork will collect dust for one more week in the basement.
I soo cannot wait for Barnburner's predictable reply...
