Doogie's The Scoops: Two NCAA wins needed for Tubby Smith to feel safe at 'U'?

Suppose you are in PR in the Athletic Department and you are trying to figure out a way to justify firing Tubby.

You need a spectacular answer to the question, "So you are paying $2.5 million dollars to get rid of the coach who just delivered the first tournament win in 16 years?"

To ask the question is virtually to answer it.

I have to think he'll be here next year now.

Tubby has plenty of faults.. but he has plenty of strengths. Its obviously, like GopherPlaya, lots of folks on this board hate him.. at the end of the day, I would love to have a coach that wins the BT and makes the NCAA tourney on a regular basis. So far, Tubby has not done much in the BT. However, his NCAA track record is pretty much ahead of any other former Gopher coach (3 appearances and now, perhaps a run). If we beat Florida, I guess I want to ask folks what it is that they want. Tourney success or BT success. Obviously both would be great, but right now, Michigan St, Indy and Ohio St have the only programs in the BT with a track record of that. Wisky is close behind, but typically only make one round, less this year. I agree, that recruiting is worrisome of late, but part of that is due to the two year dry spell, Clem had the same ups and downs. I think we beat Florida, that is going to greatly help recruiting for the big class.

At the end of the day, I want tourney success, that is all that matters. Tubby has as good a track record at that than anyone we have had at coach..which is pretty eye opening about Minnesota's futility at hoops..even though folks like to somehow paint the Clem years like we were Duke or something.

If Teague makes a move, I am behind him 100%, but I certainly would not have a problem with Tubby if he returns next year. I realize I am in the minority but I base my opinion on how much fun I have had as a gopher fan over the past 15 years. I have received far more enjoyment with Tubby at the helm than I have in any Gopher year, excluding the final four run. Is there room for improvement. YES. I think we should be in the tourney every year. But I wouldn't pay premium money and travel to watch the team (which I do quite a bit) if I didn't enjoy the team. Now, I realize lots of folks would rather go through life with a bowl of pissed on cheerios, but not me.

Now, I also see room for improvement. More consistent recruiting. Choosing players who fit your tough love style, etc. If Teague has an exit/season ending interviews with every player and they all piss and moan about Tubby, then sure, lets move on.. as there is no point. If we would have crapped our pants against UCLA, I would have changed my tune. No, one game does not decide everything, but making a run is important and Tubby is past due for one. I would agree that middle of the pack BT results and zero tourney runs are cause for getting rid of him.

I guess my torch and pitchfork will collect dust for one more week in the basement.

I soo cannot wait for Barnburner's predictable reply...

Tourney success is not all that matters. If it were, they wouldn't bother hanging those conference championship banners in the Barn. And if the quality of their play in regular games wasn't anyone's concern, we wouldn't spend an arm and a leg for season tickets.

Some Jerks like to stir the pot with absurd threads like this. The "boosters" are really freaked out about losing a rivals 3 star recruit from Nevada! really is Doogie a mindless scarecrow or just a sh*t starter. Last year Tubby takes a injured team to NIT finals , this year a team projected 7th in Big Ten preseason polls to the Final 32. Ofcourse not to mention Tubby has been nurturing a relationship with Tyus, Rashon, and Reid, and the fact He just got a contract extension under Teague. This is one of the dumbest threads ever by the Bleed Gopher and Doogie Tandem

I like Rashard Vaughn, but wasn't aware of this Rashon kid... please teach us THESCOUT!

To have tourney success, it implies you are having some regular season success... we have to punch our ticket somehow. Hey, I want both. I just would rather pick tourney success over regular season success if chosing. Look at UCLA. They won the Pac 12. That and .50 gets you a cup of coffee (using 1980's coffee prices)

Well six of the years were under Tubby and a few of the other ten we were under ncaa sanctions.

I will repeat what I have typed on this board many times before...only because it seems that so many rubes forget time and again that MN is not a good school to coach at...we have the worst facilities in the big ten and I would argue our facilities are not in the top 50 of all programs (top 100 if we didn't have the Barn and its history).

No up and coming coach would follow Tubby in MN...Tubby was promised a practice facility and support by the Admin...he has gotten neither...so any promises made to a less known non-Championship winning young coach would be even more hollow. Yes we have a new AD & President...but what exactly have they done so far except for talk?

Until we have a plan, funds and a shovel in the ground on upgrading the BB facilities, I believe the job at MN is not a good one and unless Flip is willing to play the role of savior in our rendition of Goldy Gopher Superstar, firing Tubby would be the silliest thing in the history of MN coaching firings...and thats saying something considering our history of silly coaching firings!

How many home games that those season tickets got you did they lose? Two. Michigan and Illinois.

The debate about tubby is now how much weight do you put on the Big 10 season? Personally, if the Vikings get the last seed in the playoffs and win the Super Bowl, even though they were below .500 in their division. I'm not calling that season a failure.

It's allllllll about tournament success. Badger fans can love their one and dones, but not me. I'd be furious if my coach finished top 4 in conference and couldn't win a darn tournament game.

If we are going to fire him after making it to the round of 32, then why didn't we fire him last year after back to back 6-12 seasons missing the tournament both times? I actually would have supported a firing last season, right now, we are improving. If he continues to improve next year, keep on keeping him. If we take a step backwards next year, I think his body of work has been weak enough to show him the door.

Also, we don't know what the outcome of this season is. Right now a 3 seed that plays a style that I think we match up well with is the most difficult thing standing between us and the Elite Eight. This season could still be pretty damn special.

Tubby has had no tourney success with Minnesota and no success in Big 10 play.... Did I miss something?

Yeah we beat the biggest traditional college basketball power by 20 points last night to win a NCAA Basketball Tournament game for the first time in 16 years. Check out sports center or the news.

Because Maturi was still AD.

First tourney win against a team in shambles.. Thanks for supporting my comment...

Tourney win against a 6 seed. If I'm not going to give Tubby a break for the injuries he has had in the past, I am sure as heck not going to diminish a tournament win because UCLA had an injured point guard.

Tubby is a good man and the timing stinks but changes need to be made for the overall health of the program moving forward. I don't think there is any doubt that Flip would take the job, greatly improve our national recruiting prowess and also give us the best chance at landing Tyus, Rashad and Reid. Like Philly so wisely stated, we will never reach our potential as a program until we upgrade our facilities.

And for those of you little bitches on here that add nothing but insults towards "fellow" Gopher fans, put down your vaseline, close your Sears lingerie catalog and find another board to infiltrate with your crap so the Gopherhole can get back to being an enjoyable place to visit.

Nice to hear from you again, Slim!

Don't be a stranger.

It's amazing, people pointed out 0 tourney wins for Tubby for so long. Now we win one and it's against a "team in shambles". You know, a team that won it's conference regular season championship and had won 7 of their last 9 coming into the game. UCLA isn't a great team by any means, but it's not like we were playing Penn St. or anything. We played a solid team and beat them by 20. Nothing more, nothing less.

This is an example of not thinking critically.

The same people trashing ucla for being in "shambles" are the same ppl on Gopherhole who said the gophers are terrible and will be one and done. Since that didnt happen an excuse was needed to justify the win. If we knock off Florida the same thing will happen, there will be trashing of Florida as if the gophers are incapable of beating the school of the blind. If we lose the never ending "fire tubby" and "mediocrity" comments will be discussed ad nauseam

Inconsistency plagued this team, last night didn't change that...tomorrow could.

A team in shambles without arguably their best or second best player hurt.... I am a fan a die hard fan but a I tell the truth thats all.

My bracket had Minnesota beating UCLA.. Every so called expert had the Gophers beating UCLA is it really a surprise.

Hmm.... Fact UCLA was missing one of their top players. Opinion mine and many others that this UCLA is in shambles... coach set to be fired and players arguing with each other. Wow I am so off based. I am a fan but I tell truth...

Their point guard played his name is Larry Drew and Andre abused him...

Thus Florida would beat the biggest traditional power in college basketball by 40??

Not excuses it is just reality. Florida is more talented and better coached hard to trash the Gophers.

Another Tubby apologist/disinformation agent!!

Thanks, BG....your Avatar always scares the *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!# out of me. :)

Oh, it's merely the Talosian Keeper from the first Star Trek pilot. The role was actually played by a petite woman, and there was a stage hand sitting down at her feet pumping a hose to inflate and deflate those veins on her/its head.
