Doogie: Visit to early workout provides insight on Kill's Gophers

Doogie, nice article with one glaring exception - your opening sentence, "Here's hoping the state of the Gophers football program will be like Charlie Sheen: it'll heal as fast as it unraveled." I have a feeling Mr. Sheen will never be "healed". He sounds like a total nutjob and it's likely only a matter of time before he comes unraveled again. Here's hoping that 2011 brings a successful season followed by bigger and better things in future years for Coach Kill, the Gopher football program, and the Gopher faithful!

1+ Every coach uses motivational tools (gimmicks) to get the most out of his players. Brewster tried stuff like Pasadena turf. It appears that Coach Kill uses things like brown t-shirts to single out players who have broken team rules.

I would argue that motivational tools are not considered gimmicks until either they don't work or a new motivator doesn't prefer that method.

I'll say this, when I was in the Marines they would always punish everyone else when one person screwed up. It could be as simple as the squad out to do some extra "PT" or having the entire companies liberty secured for the weekend. At the time, we hated our leaders for this but loved our fellow Marines. The last thing we ever wanted to do was to let our "teammates" down...if we did, ....well.....the implication was that we killed them for not doing the right thing because we were putting ourselves above the "team".

Now I'm not trying to compare the Marines and Football players, but it is pretty easy to see Kill's philosophy here. If you quit or don't give your best, the others will pay and suffer for it in the games. Trust me....you don't want to be the guy that let down all of your buddies. I think all of you that have served in the military can attest to that too.

It will be interesting to see what happens during spring football if we see any brown shirts.

"The offensive coaches will spend time with TCU's staff this offseason."

Man, the first thing that popped into my head when i read this is TCU's thirst for revenge against Becky. Their next option is to let the Gophs do it for them!

I think TCU won the 2011 Rose Bowl. So why does TCU need to get revenge?

If I'm missing something let me know.

I know a lot of TCU fans are annoyed with Bielema for announcing that he accepted an idea to play TCU in the first game of the year next season (of course @ Camp Randall and it being strictly a one and done (they'd never go to Ft. Worth)).

TCU got a little heat for "ducking" a rematch and they feel it was a calculated move by BB.

Since nobody else is saying anything

Any news on Royston? (sorry if this has been addressed elsewhere)

From what I have heard: Royston is making progress. He has been slow to recover from his injury.
Coach Kill stated that they would go lightly/cautiously with Royston in spring practice.
