Doogie: Sumlin has been investigating what he could pay his assistants at Minn

Sumlin

Would be an excellent hire! Not the biggest name but I think he wants to be in MN. He is probably the hottest up and coming coach in the country. If he doesn't get the job here he will somewhere at a big time university soon. Get him!

I like him, he is not that big name hire but it would be interesting. He would definetly need a good D coordinator because his defenses at Houston have been Minnesota like.

He's not my first choice, but chances are i will not get my first choice.

I would be fine with Sumlin.

He would be a nice hire if we are forced to move to 'tier B' in the candidate structure.

I wouldn't call him tier B. I think he would be a great hire if you valued being young and hungry above a lot of experience and possible loss of ambition/hunger.

Would be a good hire. He previously coached here over 10 years ago. He has been an active recruiter down in Texas landing some highly rated classes, and his high powered offense seems to be productive no matter who is behind center.

His defense would be a concern. His Houston defense is on par right now with Michigan's defense.

I agree, but to me tier A would be proven winner at BCS level. Richt, Leach, Bowden, etc.

Is he unable to coach defense or for his current team (talent/conference/schedule) is it a better recipe for success.

He's got to be the frontrunner right now, and IMO he's a really good candidate.
The defensive side of things is a concern, but he seems like a smart coach all around.
Maybe that's what he's checking on? He might be finding out what kind of pay raise his current guys might get and what kind of cash he'd be able to use to recruit a defensive coordinator with.
FYI they've been running the 3-4 this year, it would be interesting to bring that to the Big Ten.

Not my first choice, but not a terrible choice. I think the key to his success will be paying assistants a lot of money in order to acquire and retain an excellent staff. Look at what Zook's new staff has done at Illinois. Having met Sumlin I would say he'll be a hit with everyone involved. I'd imagine he'd stick around too.

Not my first choice but I would be satisfied with this hire...

Sumlin is a good coach and I like that this is one of his first concerns.

Sounds like I'm in the minority here but I'm not excited about Sumlin.

1) Not enough HC experience for me
2) HC experience he does have is at a small school

Sumlin strikes me as a "hot name" with less substance. I'd rather we get a more established name.

This is what I was trying to say.

The media actually gets in the way of hiring coaches by trying to get every once of info first. Coaches end up pulling out when things like this break in the media...

Not that its not their job but I wish no reporting like this would come out until the coach is hired. Polyanna I guess...

Would you say he is a scrambling coach and you'd prefer a pocket coach

3) Might not run the same offense at Minnesota

I remember in biology class learning about the elaborate dances bees would to to tell the other bees in the hive the direction and distance to the flowers. It seems that coaching searches involves a similar dance with coaches singalling their interests in all sorts of indirect ways. He's not necessarily my #1 choice, but I will be pleased with him. If the other candidates are sitting on the fence, this may nudge them one way or the other. Plus there is an advantage to a coach who can bring a staff with him.

One thing about Sumlin:

He changed his offense on the fly when he lost 2 QBs. Still the spread, but not Air Raid. They run 45-50% of the time. I like that.

3) Might not run the same offense at Minnesota

He'd run the same offense. Shotgun spread with multiple receivers and HB draws. The offense hes using at Houston isn't much different from what he had at Oklahoma, except he doesnt have an Adrian Peterson.

Fair point, but I think you have to find a way to find a balance between experience level and work ethic/desire to win at a high level. The Tubby Smith hire has been great, he stabilized the program but I don't think the next football coach will be quite as safe if he has the same yearly conference standing as Tubby has had so far.

Hes brought in a lot of touted talent on defense. He even hired the Cowboys' former Defensive Coordinator but that still hasn't improved things. It seems like hes just one of those coaches that doesn't stress defense and focuses on his offense outscoring their opponents.

He didn't have any offense at Oklahoma. Kevin Wilson was the offensive coordinator when he was there.

What was Sumlin's role? He was listed as their Offensive Coordinator.

He coached special teams and tight ends for three years and then wide receivers the next two. He was give the title of co-offensive coordinator much in the same way the Hammock was the co-OC (before Brewster was fired) or Lee is the co-DC.
