Doogie Q&A: New Gophers strength coach preaching hard work 7 days a week

Can it be football season now please???

Klein: There's a lot of work that goes into a football team besides the Xs and Os. The guys have their strength and conditioning responsibilities, guys have academic responsibilities, guys do community service -- there's a lot of parts that make up the whole of a football team.

I know that winning games is the goal, but I think the whole "coaching boys into men" mentality of Kill and staff is a breath of fresh air. I think this will go over big with parents in recruiting. I think this is completely different from the "We are a family" mentality.

NOT FAIR AT ALL!!!

That is not only not fair, but totally inaccurate. This is not just coach Kill. I know for a fact that Gopher players visited children many times. I know that one of coach Brewters first acts was to sign a game ball for a sick former player(60's). From all accounts Mason and players did community outreach and Wacker did as well.

I am happy for coach Kill and want him to succeed like everyone else here. I just don't think we need to throw former coaches and players repeatedly under the bus.

Are you buying in? Do you feel that this way of doing things is better than the previous regime?

MG: I just feel like it's totally different. Both could benefit any player. It's up to us.

I thought that was a mature response by Gray. He could have taken a shot at the old staff but didn't.

Positive Change

I agree Kill and Klein have been making key changes in fitness and the guys' daily routines.

Also know Kill has moved Sean Ferguson (RFr) from defense to the O Line.

That makes a lot of sense based due to the height of Ferguson. He just seems to have more of an OL physique.

I agree.

I've actually heard that Brew and Mason both did do quite a bit around the community as well. I do think that Kill has put a larger emphasis on academics than either of the previous coaches did, but we'll see in a couple seasons. I know I read that our academics actually improved quite a bit under Brew than the previous regime, but I don't really consider either of the prior coaches to have been guys who didn't care at all about their players.

I agree, MG is one of those who seems to do and say the right things. He kind of reminds me of Adam Weber in that sense (please don't turn this into a Weber debate). He really seems to say the right things but they don't seem contrived. He just really seems like a good hard working kid. He has never (at least publically) complained about being moved around and often not getting as many reps as almost everyone had hoped for (or have those reps be a throw).

I can't say that he will for sure be a great QB, but I am glad to have him be one of our team leaders going forward.

MG has a chance to be a legend, a Big Ten icon. He may not but I hope he does. He sure deserves credit for never complaining.

If kill is 8-16 in conference play the next three years "coaching boys into men" will stop being a breath of fresh air to the local media. If that happens all of the guys saying kill is a no gimmick coach uses the gimmick of "turning boys into men"

I hope kill is successful, but would it be too much to ask for some consistency from the local media? Don't call him a no gimmick coach and then write about his gimmicks being a breath of fresh air in your next article.

Gray's response is considerably more mature than many of the posts in GopherHole since Brewster was fired. Whatever position Gray ends up playing Gopher fans are extremely lucky to have him. He is a winner. And I think he will be the type of Gopher alumnus who will stay involved with the program after he graduates. Marquis appears to be first class all the way.

So, you highlighted the part that read guys do community service and then stated "That is not only not fair, but totally inaccurate. This is not just coach Kill. Can you do me a favor and highlight the part where anyone stated that the previous coaches did not do community service, or were not advocates of community service?

I have grown tired of the rear-view mirror bashing of coaches as well, but here I think you're just looking for a fight that doesn't exist.

Can it be football season now please???

A part of me is glad that it isn't football season now. I love the fact that we have another six months to get these guys ready before the real fun start.

You presume there was a shot to take.

Not looking for a fight, just stating that This is bigger than Kill and has been going on for some time. The part below is what I'm referring to. Especially the whole coaching boys into men comment, and the I think this is completely different from the "we are family" mentality(recopied and pasted below) .

Again, I am delighted to have Coach Kill and staff on board. I just happen to think that the previous staffs and most of all players should be recognized for their accomplishments as well.
