Doogie interviews Matt Limegrover

First off, sorry for my naivete.

Doogie mentions that Devon Wright is ready to help out, and identifies him as a redshirt freshman.

Does anybody know any details about his situation, in regards to if he redshirted or if he effectively grayshirted? It seemed a lot like Marqueis Gray's situation -- when he skipped 2008, it did not count as a redshirt year (2009 was his true freshman year).

Is Devon a true freshman or a redshirt?

I believe he is a true freshman as he was ruled to be not eligible to practice, even though he was in school.

That's a great interview! Nice job Doogie. I especially like the part about Green. I had a feeling he wasn't getting healthy and I started to wonder if he was going to be able to come back from his injury (there were some questions about it last season). So, I am extremely happy that I was wrong about that.

Eker, I don't know the answer to that question and I have always wondered. I'd guess that he is a true freshman next season, but I really don't know.

Going back through my notes... appears that Harrys Ghost is correct: he'll have 5 years to play 4, so very well could redshirt... but for sake of the paragraph, he should be viewed as a 'true freshman'.

Will make the correction.

Thanks!

I believe he is a true freshman as he was not allowed to practice even though he was in school.

If he was in school, I believe that starts his eligibility clock. That is why greyshirts don't start until January...

I could be wrong.

In general you are correct, but in this case I believe he was admitted to school and the NCAA came along and said he was ineligible due to some clearinghouse issue. So, if he was ineligible he probably could not be burning eligibility.

Nice interview Doogs!

What are your impressions of this coaching staff? I'm fired up, but then I will admit that I am biased.....your thoughts?

Curious about this too. I think it's great that they've worked together for so long and how they have followed Coach Kill around.

Doogie, great interview with Limegrover. Have you had a chance to talk to Claeys? I'm curious what he thinks of the defense after being through a spring with them and how he thinks they will do in the fall.

Either way...

That was a great interview! I can't believe how much I learned about our offense from it. I'm so glad NCAA '12 is out so I can at least itch a little bit of this football fever I got..

Limegrover really sounds like a football coach, not a mad scientist, not a salesman, not a curmudgeon.
Really refreshing and calming to hear him explain philosophies and the system, how he interacts with his coaches and players.
His gameday actual playcalling will be the missing piece, can he dial up a clutch playcall on 3rd and goal at the 5 down by 4 with 3 seconds left to beat a team. If he can do that we will be good to go.

What Zebrowski, Reeves, and Poore helped do to Fresno in the bowl game jumps out. I like Limegrover a ton, and get the sense that Kill defers to him a lot. Kill will spend more time on the defensive side.

Still think if they win 5 games this year, with one of the five coming against Wis., Iowa, or Neb. (all at TCF), that'll equal a successful season. It'll take time for these guys. Brewster left a mess.

I did. A just as long Q&A with Claeys will post next week. Going through, and editing it right now.

Great interview Doogie. I'm liking what I hear from each coach as he outlines his coaching philosophy. Bodes well for the future of the Gopher program. It's going to be fun to watch this team develop over the next 2-3 years.

I am sure you are right because, like I said, I don't know a ton about eligibility stuff. However, I don't think that just because a player is ruled academically ineligible that their eligibility doesn't run. For instance, if a player who was a RS SO this season was ruled academically ineligible, he would sit out the season and he would still lose a year of eligibility.

I understand why Q's clock didn't start because he was home, in Indiana at the time.

With Wright, I don't understand why he isn't more like my hypothetical RS SO player (missing a year because of academic issues but still in school)...

So yeah, i'm not arguing with you because you probably have a way better idea of how this works...

Thanks guys. I'm really excited to hear Green is healthy as well (knock on wood).

Great interview, Doogie. I love the clarity and thoughtfulness in his answers. It is evident he has a system and he is sticking to it, although he isn't so rigid he will force kids in/push them out of his system.

Excellent interview but I wish Doogie had asked about the tight end, h-back, & fullback positions.

Didn't you hate the Kill hire? Also, can you be specific what mess Brewster left? Talent? Grades? Recruiting? My sense is that after Brewster left, the kids went downhill academicaly. That Brewster left more talent than Mase left him. That Kill retained many of Brews recruits for this year.

Can you be specific on the mess that was left?

I don't know the answer but believe the difference between Wright's case and your examples is that from the University's perspective he was good to go academically but from the clearinghouse perspective he was ineligible. So, when he entered the U, he was athletically ineligible and that clock never started. In the case of a typical gray shirt, the player is eligible both academically and athletically so if they enter at the beginning of the year, their athletic clock would start even if they are not on the team. Same for a player that is eligible when admitted and then becomes academically ineligible. In Q's case, once his test score was called into question, it became an issue both academically and athletically.

It is probably more complicated than this. As I recall, Coach Kill commented on Wright's status around the time that spring practice started. As I remember, he said something to the effect that even though Wright was in school and doing o.k. he could not start practicing until summer camp.

We spent too much time off-camera talking, so I couldn't get to 5 or so topics I wanted to. He had a meeting to get to.

Now now.. Stop interjecting truth into that argument! =P

Hate is a strong word. I attacked the process more than anything -- Mona involved heavily, and some other points -- and wondered why they would fly commercial to San Diego to interview Hoke when all they had to do was ask for permission for a certain private jet. I did think they could get a higher-profile coach, but after spending a good amount of time around Kill, I am on-board. I also have talked to at least 50 people who have gotten to know Kill, and on background, everyone loves him.

As for the mess Brew left, yes, academics a big part. Also, a divide in the locker room -- ground rules not carried out... Lack of discipline.

Kill was left about the same kind of mess any new coach gets when they take over. His biggest hurdle is to overcome 45 years of bad to mediocre football performance at the U. Not the academics that went downhill especially after Brew's departure. The talent level is better for Kill than what Brewster took over almost at every position. Which I agree is not saying much. As far as discipline goes, yes Brewster did not do a good job with this, however, Kill is an extreme disciplianrian and I am sure he can clean that up rather quickly. It is better than trying to clean up an infractions mess or probation mess like at some schools.

Really like this one Doogie.

Just start the damn season already!

Thanks Doogie, this was a great interview. He was very forthcoming, honest and some times very blunt is his responses. There didn't seem to be too much coach speak. It was a refreshing to see a coach be so open and honest.

Name one decent DB on the roster when Brew took over. We had to start Callado as a true freshman! Mason left Brewster with almost nothing. Brewster at least built the talent level back up.

Good job Doogie! I think its cool as hell that we have coaches from Carleton and the U of Chicago. Not your typical pedigree for DI coaches. Go Gophers!

Yeah, the rosters after the past couple regimes were disasters. I actually think Kill is walking into a program with significantly more talent. Both programs had quite a few off the field concerns at the time of their respective firings.

I don't say this to get into the tired old Mase v. Brew debate, just as a way to sort of set my expectations on what I think Kill could/should do in the next couple years.
