the guy is getting thrust into a *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!#ty situation he will have no offensive line and a lack of recievers both due to injuries.. this season has shown just how important offensive line depth is maybe he will shock us all but i fear the worst 2moro.... i hate stupid wisconsin

I'm pretty sure you still have to "judge" him. We just have to take into account all the things going into his first start and evaluate his performance correctly with that in mind. I still expect him to be productive as the coaching staff (should) put him in a good position to succeed or they will look very very foolish.

I believe that if we lose badly to Wisconsin tomorrow, we should put Jerry on the hot seat. After this whole week, I've done with his antics, and I believe that we do deserve a better coach than that.

It's a lot of instant gratification Gopher fans... it's pretty sad...

Are you kidding me? Seriously - the hot seat....in year two, while already having surpassed year one (and 2010) win total, after losing a road game against a superior team that has lost THREE GAMES at home since 2008?

This has potential to reach patented DPo / Dr Don "heretofore epic dumbassery" etc etc levels

Please don't visit this site ever again.

I'll tell you what...if he marches into Camp Randall and sets the place on fire, i will most certainly pass judgement on the kid (As a hero). Phillip Nelson, welcome to your Minnesota Golden Gophers, Ski-U-Mah!

Grow up people! If it wasn't for the redshirt we'd all want Nelson to start. Shortell doesn't gives us any more chance to win.

Yeah, um, Jerry already bought himself another year by using that $$$ to pay off UNC. He's hear for 4 more years minimum, and he knows it.

He's playing a long game here, just as he should.

I'll write your post-game message if Nelson and/or the Gophers have success:
"GIVE KILL A LIFETIME CONTRACT; JUST MADE MY RESERVATIONS IN PASADENA FOR JANUARY '14!!!!!" (equally ridiculous as your above post)

Wow...glad you're not involved in any U of M football decisions.

This is this guy's first post ever, from around this time last year:

My God, is the forum ALWAYS like this when we lose? It is very annoying seeing these topics every week to the point where this forum becomes unbearable. From a lurker's point of view, I see this as coach Kill's first year here trying to turn around a beaten football program. People here are so absorbed into the negativity that we must have topics trying to reassure the others what the 'reality' is.

Unless I'm being trolled here, then who the hell trolls a college football board?

With fans like us we deserve Tim Brewster!

It is correct that Nelson should not be judged on this game but the assumption is that he will have a bad game by the OP. If he has a good game he also should be judge accordingly and not made into the savior of the program. However, it is probably already too late for that.

Oh he well be judged on his start today....because that's how the media and fans roll...count on it.

You are the worst college football 'fan' I've ever seen. GTFO

Well, I thought he judged out quite well. He looked the part. A couple picks, I think only one truly bad throw though, on that second pick. Otherwise, just looked like a guy who was on the road with basically everything working against him.

He wasn't that bad. Forced the 1st INT and threw the 2nd short but overall a pretty good job for a Freshman. Wished they would have trusted him a little more actually. Or kept Williams in there to hand the ball to, but as we've been told again and again this week, guess we should just keep those opinions to ourselves..

Nelson played about as well as you can reasonably expect for a true freshman getting his first action on the road in the conference. He didn't make a lot of bad decisions outside of the 2nd pick. His throws seemed mostly on target and he did a decent job running the ball. To me he looks like a cross between our other QB's. I think Shortell is the best passer we have, I think Gray is by far the best runner....Nelson will slot firmly inbetween, better runner then Max, better passer than Gray.

No one with half a brain would judge Nelson by today's game. That said, he did 'fine', maybe even 'pretty decent' for a freshman QB in a tough environment.

However, the game went pretty much as expected and illustrates precisely why it was TERRIBLY unfortunate that we had to burn Nelson's redshirt: there was basically NO upside here. Yeah, it would have been great if he had gone out, fired up the whole team and led us to an upset victory. It also would have been a miracle. What played out is by far the most likely of all the circumstances. A so-so QB performance against a vastly superior team that methodically pounded us into submission. Nelson had little to do with the outcome (good or bad), and we burned his redshirt for it. Even if he had played 'very well' we lose.

I know the situation was forced on Kill due to injuries, but it really sucks.

I'm cool with Nelson's play. Not a cannon for a arm, but he seems smart and looks like he knows what he is doing back there. Wish they wouldn't run him as much though.

I think Nelson is like T. Martinez and when he ages he will be a better runner and passer than T. Martinez! Nelson did well and I also wish we saved his redhsirt. It looks like Nelson is our QB of the present and Future.

He did pretty darn well.

One thing he'll have learned in a jiffy is that he has no business going east-west.

That was beautiful, just beautiful!

Nelson played alright.

He looked like a talented guy who should probably not be playing right now.

I don't think he gave us the best chance of winning (I think Shortell and Gray are both further along right now), but maybe it was an injury thing. If it wasn't an injury thing, I don't like the decision to play him. That said, he looked decent.

Yep, there is a difference between being fast for a QB in Southern Minnesota and being fast for a QB in the Big 10. He looked pretty quick, but when he went east-west, he looked slow.
