Donielle "Nuke" Hayes Commits!!!!!

With a nickname like Nuke I was thinking linebacker.

The offer list isn’t overly impressive, nice write up here though.

Hoping to be doing a "Nuuuuukkke" cheer at TCF for those great catches in the future...

Also "Nuke" has a better sound to it than "Bucko"...

Getting a little bit of Tyler Johnson vibes. Maybe slightly smaller, but looks solidly built.

This one kind of came out of nowhere, at least don't remember hearing much about this guy prior to the commitment. Hopefully not like Pyburn last year being a Florida kid holding out for the big time local offer.

NUKE! Congrats Nuke Hayes!

This class cycle can be a recruiting bonanza for in-state players and middling three-star players who are seizing more opportunities they may not have received Pre-Nil and Pre-Transfer Portal.

We better get used to this. The movement of players is very fluid today. Players may still de-commit before early NSD. They may be in the portal at any time. Coaches have to adapt. I am glad the Gophers have the current coaching and recruiting staff.

The window is slowly closing for Anthony Brown if he wants to join his brother with the Gophers.

Are they getting rid of the 25 new commits per year limit rule starting with the 2023 class?

In other words, you just have to have 85 or fewer scholarship players each season, however you arrive there.

I thought there was an exemption for this year to offset losses to the transfer portal. I may be wrong.

In the post-portal world, I wouldn't worry much about counting scholarships any more. Upperclassmen buried on the depth chart will transfer out next year.

I think there has always been an exemption if your roster has more than 25 available spots.
The rule was that each fall you could have no more than 25 players on scholarship who were not on scholarship (and on the roster) the fall before. That was in addition to the 85 overall max.

I do recall something about a new exemption, maybe up to 7 additional to the 25 for each player you lose in the portal. So a max of 32.

Was just thinking, with "Nuke" I believe it is 17 for 2023, and assume we're keeping a minimum of 2 more for Howard and A Brown, if not maybe 1 or 2 more. So if the hard and fast 25 rule was still in place, it wouldn't leave much room for portal transfers to join the team for 2023.

But -- as always is the case -- the coaches are paid to know what the actual rules are, and they always seem to get it to work out each year!

Nuke Hayes.

Last great Nuke was Laloosh but who knows where he ended up

Bucko never should have been a thing. Let’s hope they don’t mess with his nickname saying “Nuke” is offensive or symbolizes war or something ridiculous.

Having a memory of Mike Grimm saying "and the crowd has gone nuclear!!" after Rashod Bateman scored our first TD against #4 Penn State. Let's hope Nuke can do the same!

I actually drew that play onto a poster board and hung it in my sons room. Someday he’ll get to understand how fucking loud that stadium was at that exact moment.

Might have to see if I can find that game on YouTube to watch again.
