I was just thinking that Teague must have the practice facility plans on his desk by now and probably at least one big donor lined up so he can reference them in his coaching search. Use them to attract the new coach, then announce them a week after the new coach is hired.

I think this guy is pretty smart and has this all worked out in his head...hope he doesn't get tripped up!

I think there is a good chance we announce a start date for a practice facility in the very near future. That will be one of the most concerning issues a new coach would like answered before accepting an offer.

The facilities plan has been mentioned numerous times and I know that's in the works, so he definitely has something he can share with prospective coaches.

That said, it's totally unclear just how close they are to raising the necessary funds and where those funds will go first and foremost. I hope it's as you say, just around the corner, but I have some doubts as I'm sure many do.

Getting a new coach is just a step to get more $$$ donated I would think.
People were bored of Tubby-ball.

If they seriously had one guy write the check for Tubby's buyout I have no doubt Teague is finalizing the details on practice facility funding.

Would be nice if they could open it for fall 2014...

Maybe they AD will get the new guy a practice facility to help make their hire look good like Maturi canned Mason and let Brewster recruit to the new stadium

I hope not. That money should be going to scholarships for actual students, not crybaby athletes who barely attend class. How are you going to explain all this money that the athletic department is throwing out the window to parents who are struggling to pay tuition bills?

Not sure if serious.

Sorry, I read the comments on the Strib article and it temporarily warped my brain.

It would be nice to get ground broken on a new facility before the big three make a final decision on where they want to go.

By this logic, all money the University receives in funds should be going towards funding students' educations directly? That'd be a tough business plan sell. Gotta see it as an investment in the school. Better facilities, better coach=better ball players=more successful basketball program=more revenue from basketball long-term and booster support=more money for the school to fund all sorts of things in the school.

It is most definitely part of the process. Tubby-ball wasn't helping enough with the process. A new name will make it happen a lot faster.

I heard the U was struggling with fundraising and a main reason was the unhappiness with Tubby.

Wasn't this same exact vapid question asked at Teague's presser yesterday? (who was it who asked that anyways?) What next, will all the liberal arts parents/students cry foul when the College of Science and Engineering gets 10x the money for their a brand new particle physics lab?

That candy a$$ in the press conference was serious. What was that guys name?

Completely clueless.

I agree and it's time to join the arms race. I feel the program is in good shape moving forward and would like the Administration to finally realize what it means and takes to compete in the B1G.

Not sure, but there was a state rep. on KSTP last night grumbling about the buyout: "That angers Republican State Representative Bob Barrett who says while the payout does not directly come from the state's general fund, it will impact taxpayers as the University asks lawmakers for tens of millions of dollars to avoid raising tuition."

But yet it is okay to spend a half a billion dollars of public money on a Viking/Zigi stadium.

If Barrett would get his sh&t together and get to work on a real, balanced budget for the state, we wouldn't be having this conversation. The fact is that Norwood is doing what he can do to get the program going; taking matters into his own hands. It takes some cahones, and he's not sitting around waiting for the action to come to him. I like it.

These reps and administrators are living in fantasy land, where everything should come for free, without any real decision-making. Makes me sick to my stomach.

You maybe got it from Bilas.

It's hilarious to me when politicians and government officials complain about others "wasting money". The government throws more money down the drain than anyone else.

Sadly, this post is one of the best ever.

When the Basketball team subsidizes the rest of the athletic department to the tune of approximately $20 Million/year, it is odd that anyone would be stupid enough to complain about a $3 Million buyout, made in the explicit hope of making even more money in the future which still won't be going towards the practice facility which will be largely funded by private donors.

Of course the U asks for millions in funding a year, it's a public university. Running one of the top 25 public universities in the country isn't cheap. Men's Basketball contributes to the bottom line and tuition would be higher if we got rid of it.

It's sad that so many members of the Minnesota Republican Party seem to want to destroy the University. Under the "leadership" of Pawlenty the U saw in-state tuition rise to one of the highest rates in the country. Apparently Pawlenty didn't want to offer the same opportunity for ungrad and graduate school that was offered the son of a blue-collar working-class guy from South Saint Paul. The U is one of the best economic generators in the state and if we let cheap politicians continue to short change it the whole state will suffer.
