Serious question.
No doubt kill regrets pulling the shirt considering he hasn't played him again.
If Liedner stays healthy I am assuming Croft will redshirt next year.

What say you?

What year is Perra? Is he back next year? If he wins the backup job assuming Leidner is the starter I think you consider it.

Perra is a RSFr this year. Not as good as Croft tho.

I believe once you "burn" a redshirt there is not an optional one in the closet for coming years.

No

Both of our best two quarterbacks will play each and every season under Kill (and probably 95% of all programs). Unless, we get some stud JUCO or graduate transfer, Croft will be either #1 or #2 on the depth chart.

Croft already beat out Perra, seems unlikely Perra would leap frog him next year.

As for the original question I don't see them red shirting their #2.

It is not like they have to declare it. If he simply never plays, it means he redshirted. If ML7 is healthy, do you think Croft plays? I don't.

1. Doubtful
2. Doubtful

It's threads like this that make you wonder if people even watch college football.

Didn't he already play in a second game? Pretty sure he got a whole quarter of work against Purdue after playing at Northwestern. So he has played in 1 of 2 games since the burning, and you think that's a waste? Based on what we have seen, he looks pretty good as a backup ready to step in if Mitch gets hurt or really struggles, he looks a little too skinny to be very durable, but who knows. I don't think quarterback play had anything to do with our loss to Nebraska.

Best case for the gophers Demry gets minutes in 2 or 3 more games and is settled down and ready to step in when it's his time. When that time is will depend on what he shows in those glimpses and where Mitch is at.

I think your premise is flawed. Here’s how I see it: Kill doesn’t regret playing Croft unless you mean he wishes he had a better option as a #2 QB, then sure he would have redshirted him. The staff doesn’t have much faith in any of the QBs, but Mitch is the best option. Once it became clear that neither Perra nor Strev was going to be the backup, getting Croft some time became a necessity so that the wouldn’t have to face a situation where he’d have to go in full time due to injury without any experience. I am sure the plan was to use the “easy” non-conference games to get Croft some work. In a strange way, Mitch’s struggles actually delayed this process because the non-conference games where we would have been likely to get Croft some reps were too close for them to trust Croft in those games.

As to your second question, I would think that if some better backup emerges, either from the current roster or as a new addition, then they might consider letting Croft sit and build up his body. I’d put the chances of that at about 10%.

No, it's already pulled. Croft wouldn't have passed Perra if Perra was better. The starting job will be Mitch's to lose, but I wouldn't be shocked if Croft competes for the starting job in the off season.

IMO, there will be a two QB system in play next year. At least in Non-conference season.

This is not accurate. Red shirts can be used during any year - they don't have to be used before the player ever plays. That is the "5 to play 4" aspect. As has already been pointed out - look at Gary Moore.... Played last year as a true freshman and is red-shirting this year. He will be a red-shirt Sophmore next season.

100% Right.

Shane Morris has played the past 2 years, and is now redshirting this season for Michigan. You can redshirt at anytime, as long as you have not redshirted already.

I would suspect we will see more of Croft next season in preparation for him to assume the starting roll in 2017, not less (or none).

I still think they should play him a series or two every game from here on out just to get him experience and show a different look. No disrespect to Leidner, he still gives overall the best chance of victory. But hopefully inserting Croft in spots can be beneficial short term and long term...
