Yes, obviously it is technically part of the NCAA Tournament... that said, do you consider it a true tournament birth? I figured I'd ask this before the brackets were announced in the event the Gophers get placed in one of these games.

If the NCAA Tournament has 68 teams placed in it, then YES it is part of it.

IF the Gophers are one of the four, then we made the Dance. If we make the Dance, let's all do the Irish Jig or a Scandinavian schottische or a polka to Whoopy John Wilfahrt. Whoopy John Wilfahrt and his band will play.

No. I see it as a joke and a further attempt at a money grab by a hypocritical and corrupt association. I fully expect a larger, more watered down version of the tournament within a decade.

It certainly is part of the tournament. I don't consider making the play-in game and losing before the round of 64 to be any better than it was to be one of the last four out back when the field was only 64 teams.

The same way I consider the Texas Bowl to be a bowl game, but I do not consider a Gopher team that makes the Texas Bowl to be automatically more impressive than a team that did not go to a bowl back when there were less bowls available.

You are just such a beam of sunshine on this fun day.

Yes because you have the opportunity to make it to the Sweet 16, the Elite 8, etc. I would Mich rather have the bye to the Round of 64, but as it is, you are in the tournament and will make it as far as your team takes you.

Absolutely part of the dance. While I'm dubious about the likelihood of the invitation, if it comes, tip of the hat to the team for getting the most out an undermanned but improving squad.

I think you hit on the most important point. If we go on a big tourney run, I'm not going to care that it started in the first four.

Who did the most with the least?

1. Tim Miles, Nebraska
2. Rich Pitino, Minnesota
3. GopherHole

I'm not a fan of the play-in games, but just because I don't like it doesn't mean it isn't officially part the tournament. Think 3, 5, or 10 years down the line. We still would have an NCAA tournament appearance on our record and hardly anyone would remember that it was a 1st 4 appearance.

I still consider it making the tournament. I don't consider winning that game an NCAA tournament win however.

Officially, yes, but I voted no because I don't like moving beyond 64 teams. I consider really being in the tourney to have made the round of 64.

The question wasn't how many teams you think should be in the tournament. This thread is pretty dumb, of course it's part of the tournament. VCU went from First Four to Final Four.

The NCAA muckety-mucks are not fools. By adding 4 teams to get to a field of 68, they increased interest in the Tourney. What is wrong with that?

By "play-in" game are you guys referring to the "first round" of the NCAA tournament?

I voted no because it taints everything. Last year when North Carolina A&T beat Liberty (yes, I had to look up who played) they announced that it was the MEAC's first tournament win in x-amount of years. Congrats, you beat an equally awful 16 seed. That's not a real tournament win.

Saying the Gophers made the third round last year is ridiculous. They won one game.

Also I don't know how it increases tournament interest unless you're a fan of that particular team. No one outside of a die hard is going to clamor to watch Boise State and LaSalle. It's a glorified NIT game. No one takes off work to watch play-in games. They're not apart of most of the bracket pools I've seen. I don't like it, but whatever. I also think the play-in game in baseball is ridiculous.

Call them what they are: pig-tail games.

Not saying it would happen, but what if gophers selected for play in game and Andre Hollins finds his shooting mojo and goes or 32, 27 and 35 in his next 3 games?

It is not part of the tourney. It is a play in game and an opportunity that gives you a chance to make it. You play the game and if you win then you are in.

how is this concept so hard to understand? it is not a "play in game". it is the First Four. meaning the first four games of the tourney making up what is the 1st round of the tourney.

the next games in the round of 64 played Thursday - Sunday are the 2nd and 3rd rounds of the tourney.

you can disagree with and not like the concept of it but the First Four games are in fact part of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament.

Yes, i know it is officially recognized as an NCAA tourney game but i mean really what type of tourney played 4 games for their "first round" and then plays 30 games for their "second round." Absolutely ludicrous.

Are you trying to be smarter than everyone else, or did you simply fail to understand that he considers the "first round" a mockery?

To the extent that oral sex is sex.

Mods, please remove this post.

No.

It's still better than not be in at all but it's not the real thing. It's an opportunity to get in. The tourney starts on Thursday.
