Do these losses hurt our chances to get Cory?

I hope Cory's smart enough not to chose his school based on two basketball games in November. But hey, maybe he's manic like some of you on this board.

Best post I've read all day! Thank you!

I have to agree. I am a bit new to this board and am truthfully surprised by the vitriol. We have a coach with integrity(who also has a resume that speaks for itself as far as coaching capability), players that are growing into a more cohesive unit(remember a few years ago?), and a real chance to watch a program become a perennial power. It takes time, the players in Tubby's first class are sophomores, there's been unexpected legal problems with key recruits, some disciplinary stuff that has changed the line-up. But still a feisty enjoyable group.

This is all part of following your team!! I hate to sound patronizing but there are posters here that sound like spoiled children. Scream and cry and panic when a loss happens and pouty reluctant praise after a victory. Maybe they think this is where they can air their anxieties but they should remember that part of following a team is sticking by them. SURE, we can question decisions and arm-chair coach, that's fun, but the negative stuff is fatiguing.

No they don't hurt our chances to get Cory. I have no idea what he is waiting for when picking a school, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't the results of this tourney.

And I would think he wants to go to a team and have a shot at starting, so, this tourney would indicate he does.

It's just gonna get worser and worser

A good friend of mine lives in one of those pricey loft condo complexes on Snelling. His across-the-hall neighbor is a grandma or great-aunt to the scoring phenom of the Highland Park 8th grade travelling team. (This team is, like, the real deal as they travel in color-coordinated Suburbans to all their away games)

So anyway, he tells me that she told him that three of the starting five on this team have banded together and are gonna sign with the same private HS and then at a Division I school. (She was pretty sure it would be Division I from what he told me.)

But now -- after seeing the Atrocity in Annaheim (I guess that's what these kids call it) -- they've decided not to meet with Tubby or any Gopher Assistants. As I look at our schollie situation, I know we're gonna have to do a major reload job for the class of 2015 so I'm really, really worried. Plus one of the kids apparently got into a scrape with his guidance counselor and is worried that Tubby will blow things out of proportion and bench him for two of his first four years, that heartless coach.

We're doomed to not even going to the NIT but having to accept the College Basketball Invitational Tournament not only for our lifetimes, or our kid's lifetimes but for our grandkids' lifetimes.

This just sucks for the future of the program and we can blame it on the general suckitude of the team and the nervous nellies who aren't real fans and won't let bygones by bygones.

Depends. Does he want to play in an offense that might be accurately described with words like fun, exciting, good, and uptempo? Or would he prefer to play in an offense that can be described with words such as putrid, meatgrinder, garbage, and flaming train wreck?

Does he want to play on a team that can compete for a championship, or does he want to play on a team with diminished expectations?

If it's the latter in both cases, I think these losses have actually helped us.

Yeah, it'll kill us. He'll look at these two performances and tell himself that there's no way he could ever crack this starting line up.

Take a chill pill people. We have one of the best coaches in the country and a very good group of players. Tubby has a plan, be patient and I think you will be rewarded come NCAA time.

I don't think the results of this tournament will have any bearing on the Gophers chances of landing Cory Joseph.

College choice for most students -- and many athletes -- hinge on the thing called fit. Do they feel like they belong there? Do they like the coaching staff? Do they like the other players? Etc.

Want to have a shot at starting right away? Come here.

Our starting backcourt could (should) be the two Joseph brothers next year.

Absolutely right on the money with that post, anonymous. Thanks for sharing that.

Go Gophers!

Yes, I have to

Yes I have to agree.

Joseph and Joseph. A once in a lifetime opportunity Cory. Play with your brother under Tubby Smith.

Well, if Cory is so impressionable that two games in November do enough for him to eliminate the Gophers, then I don't want him anyway. Have to remember there are 30+ games in a college basketball season for a reason.

Hoopmasters Says (Clipped)

... Cory Joseph 6-4 SG/PG Henderson, NV Findlay Prep – He was absolutely stellar in the final scoring 34 points, he hit big shot after big shot that kept Findlay in charge. He is a big-time scorer who can run break, but has to work on his decisions to eventually be a point in college and beyond. He was our Co-Most Outstanding Player with Miller. He has a final five schools that includes Connecticut, Minnesota, Texas, Villanova, and UNLV ...

This weekend should have given Cory the best reasons yet to come here.

Wasn't his mother worried about what was going on up here and called Tubby? This weekend indicated that Tubby is a pretty tough coach for discipline and isn't afraid to do the right thing. He doesn't give up on kids, he molds them.

This team is also begging for a scorer. We need someone (or two people) who can create opportunities and score. If Cory is as good a scorer as he appears to be, if he's the guy that likes to have the ball in his hands when the game is on the line, if he has the strength to drive into the lane with traffic and the vision to see an obvious open bigman or wing with a good look - then he should want to come here. That's exactly what the gophers need to be a top 10 team. We've got lots of good people, we don't have any great people - particularly scorers. We have the troops, we need the general.

Agreed

I have disliked everything you have ever said on this board.

TAMU is ranked in this week's polls. Portland just missed the Top 25.

Both are highly regarded here www.kenpom.com as are the Gophers.

Texas San Antonio is 8 spots better than Michigan St.? Minnesota is 37 spots better than MSU? Gonzaga, winner of the Maui Invitational, is 2 spots worse than Maryland, 4th place finisher in the Maui Invitational? I think it's fair to say that those rankings do not mean very much at this point in the season.

If you remember why the preseason expectations were so high, they involved a couple of players with pretty good resumes joining the team. Neither of those two have played yet. Take those two out of the equation and you see what we get. Less depth and fewer scoring options. If they had not signed on, the expectations would not have been as great either.

I agree. I cant help but think the brother dimension will be the determining factor. Does he want to play with his brother for two years or not?

At this point he has to figure he can start next season with his brother.

He could do a lot worse than playing for Tubby Smith!

Obviously I hope he and Devoe are very close. :) :) :)

You are ridiculous...that is easily the dumbest ranking system I have ever seen, but a previous poster saved me the time of making you look like a fool.

Stats can be manipulated in any way you want, so something that stupid is truly irrelevant. Congratulations on another stupid post.

The topic posted is one of the most ludicrous posts I've read on this board. Who thinks this way? Why are we worrying about how a team's poor performance in two games in November will affect the thinking of a 17- or 18-year-old kid. I have visions of our Gophers in their pregame huddle, every player placing his hand in the middle of the huddle, and the team yelling "Corey" as they break the huddle. After losing two games in Anaheim, I think the coach, the players, and the fans should have other concerns.

KenPom ratings have a proven track record. You don't. Simple as that. Simpler than you, even. And THAT'S hard to do.

Careful FOT. Tubbytown is about to come back at you saying how smart and correct he is about this team and college basketball in general and that you're just plain dumb for not agreeing. Just thought I'd warn you. :D
