Dish and BTN Reach Temporary Agreement

Hardly, we'll be at the game.

That's bad news though. Not hard to believe that Fox would start squeezing their competitors. Wonder when the Comcast contract is up?

comcast won't drop BTN. you notice how these issues are almost always between the satellite companies and different networks? very rarely is it between cable companies (i.e. comcast, time warner, charter, verizon fios, att-uverse, etc.) and the different networks. and almost always it is DISH being stupid and not directv. dish is a shoddy outfit, imo.

Comcast has had their share of disputes, but you're right Dish and Direct TV have had more and it's going to get worse. A lot of those have revolved around Fox programming and with Fox owning Direct TV it's always going to be an issue. Wonder where Direct TV's rates would head if Dish is driven out of the picture?

fox also owns a share of the BTN network. wouldn't be surprised if that is also playing into DISH attempting to play hard ball with BTN on negotiations. i.e. fox being part owner of their satellite competitor directv and BTN certainly can't help negotiations.

I can't wait for the day when we can simply pick the channels we want to watch and pay for them individually. Kim Kardashian, Honey Boo Boo, the Real Housewives and Snooki are making a killing off of my love of sports.

Sports networks charge the largest per-subscriber fee to the cable companies though. For example, ESPN is, I understand, far and away the most expensive network for the cable companies to carry. This is probably because people (customers) have a lot of emotion and identity invested in sports coverage than in say, Honey Boo Boo. In this way, the Big 10 network and other networks can hold the carriers hostage for higher per subscriber fees by exploiting fan loyalty.

Conversely, networks that mass produce high volume, low buck reality shows come relatively cheap to the cable companies on a per subscriber basis. ESPN, the B1G, FSN, etc. are making more of a killing off of fans of low rent crappy reality show peddling networks than the other way around.

In the end, the sports networks demand bigger and bigger pieces of the pie, drum up the ire of the fans, and get a bigger piece of the pie. The cable company then increases the size of the pie, and we all pay more. The B1G Network wins, Dish wins, the viewers get screwed.
