Peter Mortell is back after steadying an inconsistent punting situation. He’s one of the Big Ten’s best. Kicker Ryan Santoso can boom it and arrives with a fat scrapbook. Marcus Jones has proven capable as a kickoff and punt return man. Other return game options include Berkley Edwards, Antonio Johnson and KJ Maye.

It seems he made an edit.

Two errors in two days. Not bad for a BTN writer. Let's see if he can go for the sweep tomorrow.

I bet we see Craig James returning some kick-offs this year...

Get this man a raise. Fo reals doe.

We definitely have some options back there in Jones, Maye, Johnson, Edwards, and James. My concern is who returns punts. Marcus Jones is inconsistent at best back there. I know he returned one for a TD (against NMSU) but he struggles with judging the ball and knowing when to catch the punt.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a guy like Fruechte doing it.

We don't have a kicker, I don't think we sare 3rd.

This would be a good thread to post this. (video)

I saw some pretty good competition between Ryan Santoso and Andrew Harte this spring. Santoso had lost a fair amount of weight and looked quite different than he did a year ago. You knew when he kicked the ball because you could hear a very loud pop. If Santoso kicks off there shouldn't be too many of his kick-offs returned this fall.

It's college football. Nobody has a kicker.

This is the most spot on thing on the front page of Gopherhole. It's remarkable that NFL teams somehow take any college kickers and then make them automatic (even Blair Walsh struggled at times in college). The only exception to the rule that nobody has a good college kicker were from my days in college when Mike Nugent seemingly was automatic for the Buckeyes. And wouldn't you know it, I don't think he's turned into anything spectacular at the NFL level!

The narrower NFL hash marks probably don't hurt

Oh, no doubt, but don't they also narrow the goal posts? Also, what happened to Mike Nugent!?!?!?!

/was irrationally excited about Mike Nugent during his heyday.

Goal posts are the same width for college and the pros.

Deinhart needs to re-read his blurb on each team. And then re arrange them. While I will not argue Michigan State's ranking, The 2 and three defy what he wrote.
The Terps have a keeper in Australian kicker Brad Craddock, who hit 21-of-25 field-goal attempts in 2013. However, punter Nathan Renfro needs more consistency. Still, he’s a vet who typically gets the job done. Speedy Will Likely is a deadly return man. There are other good options, too.
The punter needs consistency, and he names one return man. Basically a C+ against ACC competition. This will be their first year in the Big 10 East.

then he writes,

That is a B+

From what he wrote we should be number 2. Maryland should be 3.

I hear Antonio Thompson is another potential return man for us. So shifty that you don't even know he's there!
